‘Big Boy’ Steam Locomotive Coming Back to Life

big boy locomotive(AP) — One of the largest steam locomotives ever built is coming back to life.

The Union Pacific Railroad plans to restore an engine known as a Big Boy. It was a 6,300-horsepower monster designed to drag heavy freight trains over the Wyoming and Utah mountains.

Twenty-five Big Boys were built for the Union Pacific in the 1940s, but they were pushed aside by more efficient diesels by 1960.

The railroad plans to restore Big Boy No. 4014, which has been on display at the RailGiants Train Museum in California. It will be towed this month to Cheyenne, Wyo., where the work will be done at Union Pacific’s steam shop.

The project is expected to take three to five years. After that, the locomotive will be used to pull special excursion trains.

Driver Dies in Kearney County Crash

kearney_county_badge(AP) — An 86-year-old Holdrege man has died after a collision in south-central Nebraska’s Kearney County.

The Kearney County Sheriff’s Office says the accident on Nebraska Highway 44 was reported at 11:40 a.m. Sunday. Deputies say Laverne Graus was driving south when his car collided with a northbound pickup driven by 24-year-old Krystal Anderson, of Phillipsburg, Kan. Graus was pronounced dead at the scene. Anderson was taken to a Kearney hospital.

Deputies say weather and roadway conditions contributed to the accident.

Road Work to Close Hwy 30 from Cozad to Lexington

NDORRoad work continues to pick up in the area.

The Nebraska Department of Roads says Highway 30 will be closed to thru traffic beginning April 21st.

Crews will begin resurfacing the road which will include:

  • Milling the existing 24” surface.
  • Placement of 5″ concrete on the 24″ driving surface.
  • Replacement of existing County Road intersections with concrete.
  • Overlay of the existing surfaced shoulders and private driveways to match the new concrete roadway.
  • Placement of rumble strips.

NDOR officials say the speed limit in the construction zone will be reduced to 35 mph.

Residents and landowners that access their property from Highway 30 between Cozad and Lexington will still be able to do so during the project, and the road will still be accessible to local traffic.

Unauthorized vehicles traveling in the construction zone will be subject to a fine of $300.

NDOR says all thru traffic will be required to use Interstate 80.

The work is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2014.

Neb. Mom Doesn’t Want State Testing for Her Kids

testing(AP) — A southeast Nebraska woman is joining some other parents across the nation in deciding their children will not take statewide tests.

Jill Osler, of Doniphan, said she thinks the tests are about politics, not about learning.

Valorie Foy is the Nebraska Department of Education director of state assessment, and she says the assessments are a tool to help schools improve.

A growing number of parents in several states are choosing not to have their children take the standardized tests. In New York City, for example, an advocacy group called Change the Stakes estimates that as many as 1,000 students in the city will not take the English test this month.

Neb. Officials Encourage Volunteering April 20-26

serve-nebraska(AP) — Gov. Dave Heineman is encouraging all Nebraskans to volunteer next week.

ServeNebraska week is April 20 to 26.

Heineman, first lady Sally Ganem and Jamesena Moore, chairwoman of ServeNebraska, joined for a news conference Monday to publicize the effort.

Moore says she hope to see volunteerism recorded in all 93 counties during ServeNebraska week.

Heineman says Nebraska ranks fifth across the country in terms in terms of volunteerism. Moore says she wants that ranking to climb to No. 1.

Heineman and Ganem will participate by reading to fourth grade students at McPhee elementary school in Lincoln on April 24.

NP Man Arrested for Assaulting Wife, Child

Chauncey-MendozaA North Platte man is facing charges after he allegedly assaulted his wife and child.

At around 8:30 p.m., on Saturday, North Platte Police responded to the report of an assault in progress in the 2000 block of West 15th Street.

Upon arrival, officers could hear screaming inside the residence.

Officers forced entry into the home and discovered that 30-year-old Chauncey Mendoza had injured his wife by assaulting and strangling her.

Authorities also say there were children in the home at the time of the assault, and one of them was injured when they attempted to stop Mendoza from hurting their mother.

Mendoza was placed under arrest and charged with domestic assault, child abuse and felony strangulation.

He was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center where he is being held on ten percent of $15,000 bond.
