Bad Weather Cited in Fatal Custer County Crash

custer-county-sheriff(AP) — Bad weather has been cited in a fatal collision on a rural state highway in central Nebraska.

The accident occurred around 1 p.m. Tuesday, about six miles north of the Dawson-Custer county line on Nebraska Highway 47.

Custer County Sheriff Dan Osmond says 57-year-old Glenn Smith died after his pickup collided with a sport utility vehicle driven by William Warren. Smith lived in Gothenburg.

Osmond said Wednesday that Warren, of Arnold, was taken to a hospital for treatment of facial cuts and other minor injuries.

Osmond says driving on the highway was hazardous because a winter storm had made the roadway slick and the visibility poor.

NP Police Investigating Death of Lincoln County Inmate

Harry Stately

The North Platte Police Department is investigating the death of an inmate at the Lincoln County Detention Center from an apparent heart attack.

According to Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy, Roland Kramer, at around 10:15 p.m. on March 17, an inmate, 43-year-old Harry Stately, began complaining of chest pains.

Kramer said detention officers immediately offered first-aid and transported Stately to Great Plains Regional Medical Center.  Stately was released from custody and transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, where he died.

Stately was being held for possession of methamphetamine with the intent to deliver.

Lincoln County Attorney Rebecca Harling ordered an autopsy, and the NPPD was contacted to conduct an independent investigation which is still ongoing.

‘Construction Connection’ to Benefit NP Homeless Shelter

construction connectionThe Connection Homeless Shelter in North Platte is expanding and making improvements thanks to the support of the community.

With their new Thrift Connection location at 5th and Walnut up and running, the former location at 6th and Walnut was left empty.

Connection Executive Director, Neal Criddle, saw an opportunity that would increase funding for the Connection and provide a needed service to the community, which led to the creation of The Construction Connection.

The Construction Connection sells slightly-used, discontinued or unneeded remodeling materials that are still in good, useable condition.

“Sales are coming in for the few items that have been donated, but the potential is huge with the help of the community,” said Connection Board member Olivia Brown.

The Board of Directors is asking residents to donate unused wood, hardware, faucets, cupboards, tile or any items that could be used to remodel or upgrade a home.

Brown said the Board is planning to hold grand opening sometime in April.

The Construction Connection is open Monday-Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

In addition to the Construction Connection, the shelter was also recently able to upgrade some of their computer equipment.

Thanks to a grant and donations, officials say they were able to upgrade one computer in the classroom that is used by residents to search for jobs, write resumes and stay in contact with friends and family.

They also purchased a new computer for the front office that will allow for better, more accurate record keeping.

If you are interested in supporting the mission of the Connection, contact the shelter at 308-532-5050.

Neb. Juvenile Justice Changes Advance

juvenile-justice(AP) — More teenagers charged with crimes could have their cases processed in Nebraska’s juvenile court system, under a bill headed to a final vote in the Legislature.

Lawmakers gave the measure second-round approval on Tuesday. It would require that juveniles charged with Class 3A felonies or a lesser offense first have their case heard in juvenile court. Cases could still be elevated to county or district courts.

Juveniles could continue to receive drug and alcohol treatment through the juvenile courts until they turn 21.

Supporters say the higher felony charges represent the most serious violent offenses, and it’s time to treat kids like kids.

Lawmakers also voted to remove a requirement that schools contact county attorneys when students have repeated absences.

Jury Bribery Trial Begins for Scottsbluff Man

Brian Ross

(AP) — A jury bribery trial has begun for a Scottsbluff man already convicted on drug and related charges.

The trial for Brian Ross began Tuesday morning in a Scottsbluff County courtroom in Gering.

Prosecutors say Ross had spoken to a juror upon arriving at the courthouse in December for his drug trial. The juror joined the jury panel and listened to testimony, and then reported the conversation during the lunch break. The juror was replaced by an alternate.

The jury convicted Ross later of felony possession of methamphetamine and two misdemeanors: reckless driving and obstructing a police officer. Ross was acquitted of another felony, attempted assault.

NP Boy, 6, Seriously Injured in Bicycle vs. Pickup Crash

north_platte_patchA 6-year-old North Platte boy was seriously injured Monday afternoon when he was struck by a pickup in a North Platte trailer park.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, an officer with the North Platte Police Department responded to a vehicle versus bicycle accident at King’s Trailer Court, 2420 West 9th Street.

The officer learned that a 1986 Chevy pickup driven by 25-year-old Zachary Schultz was southbound inside the trailer park, when he observed a child riding a bicycle towards his vehicle.

Brown said Schultz told officers that he attempted to accelerate in order to avoid a collision with the boy, but was unable to avoid him.  The bicycle struck the rear passenger side of the truck bed.

Schultz stated that the boy seemed unsteady on his bicycle, and he felt if he had stopped, the child still would have collided with the truck.

The boy was transported to Great Plains Region Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, according to Brown.

Police are unsure of the boy’s condition, and no charges have been reported at this time.

Kearney Councilman Cited for Gambling During State Basketball Tourney

Randy Buschkoetter

(AP) — Lincoln police say a gambling citation given a Kearney city councilman during the boys state basketball tournament wasn’t for just a friendly wager.

Capt. Danny Reitan says off-duty officers saw 49-year-old Randy Buschkoetter and his 21-year-old daughter, Danielle, exchanging money with other people at a game Friday night at the Pinnacle Bank Arena. It wasn’t clear how much money was involved.

The councilman said Monday that he was willing to face the consequences of his actions, “because I will deserve them because I made some bad decisions for which I am deeply apologetic. But mostly to my daughter, who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Buschkoetter has been on the Kearney council since 1998. The city website says his term expires in December.

Teen Accused of Strangling Scotts Bluff Co. Jail Guard Pleads Not Guilty

Dylan Cardeilhac

(AP) — A 15-year-old Wyoming boy has pleaded not guilty to murder in the strangling of a western Nebraska jail guard.

Dylan Cardeilhac, of Torrington, Wyo., made his plea Monday in Scotts Bluff County District Court. Authorities say security video shows Cardeilhac luring 24-year-old Amanda Baker into his cell on Feb. 14 and shows him pouncing on her and strangling her from behind.

Authorities say another inmate, 16-year-old Guy Eagle Elk, of Lisco, told Cardeilhac how to choke the woman. Eagle Elk’s trial on a charge of aiding and abetting assault is scheduled for July. He’s pleaded not guilty.

Both boys are charged as adults.
