NPPSF Names 2014 NPHS Distinguished Alumni Award Winners

nppsfThe North Platte Public School Foundation has announced the winners of the 2014 North Platte High School Distinguished Alumni Award.

A committee composed of Foundation Directors, NPHS Administrators, NPHS Alumni and community members began the selection process in November.

This year’s recipients are:

Eliot Mack (Class of 1990) Outstanding Accomplishments in Engineering and Business

Eliot Mack is, to date, the youngest alumni to receive the award.

Graduating from NPHS in 1990, Mack received his Master of Science Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1996.

Mack has worked at Walt Disney Imagineering and iRobot.  In 2004, Mack followed his interests in visual effects and motion tracking and founded Lightcraft Technology, applying robotic techniques to the motion picture industry to create what would become the Previzion virtual studio system.

The Company recently won two prestigious awards, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences 2013 Emmy Engineering Award and the Hollywood Post Alliance Engineering Excellence Award.

More information can be found on the company’s website, www.lightcrafttech.com.

Mike Swain (Class of 1972) Outstanding Accomplishments in Service to the North Platte Community and Law Enforcement

Mike Swain graduated with the class of 1972.

Swain received his Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice through Mid-Plains Community College, and later received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Criminal Justice through the University of Nebraska at Kearney.  He is also a graduate of the 149th session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va.

Swain hired on to the North Platte Police Department as a cadet in 1973 and rose to the ranks of Investigator, Sergeant and Lieutenant before being promoted to Chief of Police in 2010.

Swain is the past president of the Police Officers Association of Nebraska, and a current member of the FBI National Academy Associates.

In 2012, Swain was appointed to the Nebraska Crime Commission by the Governor.

He is a certified driver instructor with both the Nebraska Safety Council and Traffic Safety Plus, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Moose Lodge.

Connie Cook (Class of 1970) Outstanding Accomplishments in Humanitarian Pursuits and Business

Connie Cook graduated with the Class of 1970.

Cook attended the University of Nebraska, and received her Bachelor of Science in Education.

She taught in public schools in various communities in Nebraska from 1974-1988 before moving to Washington.

In 1988, she founded her company, EMR Inc., and remains the Chief Executive Officer and sole owner.

EMR, Inc. is a company that offers a broad range of environmental services throughout the United States and internationally.  The company has won several awards over the years, including: Caring Corporation of Kansas, the Better Business Bureau’s Most Ethical Business Award, the Society of Military Engineers Subcontractor of the Year Award and the Burlington Norther Santa Fe’s Minority Supplier of the Year.

Bill to Pay for Nebraska State Park Upgrades Advances

NE Legislature(AP) — Nebraska’s state parks and recreational areas could see a new infusion of state cash for maintenance projects and upgrades.

Lawmakers voted 32-1 on Tuesday on a bill that would help pay for a $43 million backlog. The project list includes replacement water towers, new toilets and showers, and ensuring that facilities comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The bill by Sen. Bill Avery, of Lincoln, would rely on existing sales tax revenue from motor boats, personal water craft and all-terrain and utility vehicles. It would use $2.6 million in sales taxes in fiscal 2015, and $2.7 million the following year.

Nebraska has eight state parks, 59 state recreation areas and 10 state historical parks.

Nebraska Indoor Tanning Bill Advances

tanning-bed(AP) — Teenagers younger than 16 years old may soon be restricted from using indoor tanning beds in Nebraska.

Lawmakers on Tuesday gave first-round approval to a bill designed to reduce skin cancer risks. The bill by Sen. Jeremy Nordquist of Omaha would also require tanning facilities to post a sign warning that overexposure to ultraviolet radiation can cause premature skin aging and skin cancer.

Senators added an exemption for young teens if they are accompanied by a parent, and the parent signs a permission form each time their child tans.

The bill advanced on a 34-0 vote. The original legislation would have imposed a ban on users younger than 18.

More Theft Charges Filed Against Nebraska Guardian

judith-widener(AP) — More charges have been filed against a 70-year-old Nebraska Panhandle woman accused of embezzling thousands of dollars from state wards.

Judy Widener, of Bayard, has been charged with nine felony and two misdemeanor counts of theft. She originally was arrested on one count of theft. She’s pleaded not guilty. Her trial is scheduled for early June.

Widener, the president of the Safe Haven Inc., was arrested in November following a Nebraska state auditor’s report that said she took for her personal use more $35,000 intended for court-appointed wards.

State Auditor Mike Foley says Widener used a complex array of credit cards and dozens of bank accounts containing more than $600,000 as part of her scheme.

Minatare Man Gets 3-5 Years for Vehicular Homicide

Christopher Perry
Christopher Perry

(AP) — A 25-year-old Minatare man has been given three to five years in prison for vehicular homicide.

Christopher Perry was sentenced on Monday in Scotts Bluff County District Court.

Investigators say Perry was drunk on Sept. 20 when his vehicle struck one being driven by Shirley Kreman, of Bayard, about a mile east of Minatare on U.S. Highway 26. Kreman’s husband, 54-year-old Arlyn Kreman, was a passenger. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lexington Woman Pleads Guilty to Stealing Customer Account Info

judgeship(AP) — A 43-year-old woman accused of stealing and using customer account information while working at a Lexington convenience store has pleaded guilty.

Michelle Burkey is scheduled to be sentenced on April 28. Last week she pleaded guilty to attempted unauthorized use of a financial transaction device. Prosecutors had lowered the charge in return for Burkey’s plea.

Investigators say Burkey recorded customer account information while working as a clerk at the store. Two of the victims say they lost more than $2,700 total.

NP Juvenile Charged with 1st Degree Sexual Assault

north_platte_patchA North Platte juvenile has been charged with sexual assault after he allegedly assaulted an 11-year-old female.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, on January 16, 2014, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services received information that an 11-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted by a male juvenile who was 14-years-old, in early summer 2012.

Brown said that, while the juveniles aren’t related, they resided in the same home.

The victim was interviewed at the Bridge of Hope Child Advocacy Center, where she confirmed that the boy had sexually assaulted her at the residence.

On February 3, an investigator with the North Platte Police Department met with the suspect, now 16.

Following questioning, the investigator found probable cause to charge the boy with 1st degree sexual assault.

The State of Nebraska defines 1st degree sexual assault as:

(1) Any person who subjects another person to sexual penetration (a) without the consent of the victim, (b) who knew or should have known that the victim was mentally or physically incapable of resisting or appraising the nature of his or her conduct, or (c) when the actor is nineteen years of age or older and the victim is at least twelve but less than sixteen years of age is guilty of sexual assault in the first degree.

(2) Sexual assault in the first degree is a Class II felony. The sentencing judge shall consider whether the actor caused serious personal injury to the victim in reaching a decision on the sentence.

(3) Any person who is found guilty of sexual assault in the first degree for a second time when the first conviction was pursuant to this section or any other state or federal law with essentially the same elements as this section shall be sentenced to a mandatory minimum term of twenty-five years in prison.

Brown said the juvenile was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center, where he was processed and released.

The Post is choosing not the name the suspect pending the filing of formal charges by the Lincoln County Attorney’s Office.
