Toyota Tells Dealers to Stop Selling 6 Models

toyota(AP) — Toyota has told North American dealers to stop selling six popular models because the seat fabric doesn’t meet flammability standards.

Company spokesman John Hanson says one soft material beneath the seat covers doesn’t comply. No fires or injuries have been reported. Toyota is still totaling how many vehicles are affected, but it will be in the thousands.

The move affects Camry, Avalon, Sienna and Tacoma models from the 2013 and 2014 model years. Also covered are Corollas and Tundras from 2014.

It’s not clear what will happen with vehicles that have already been sold. Hanson says Toyota has reported the problem to U.S. safety regulators, who will decide if the vehicles must be recalled.

The Camry is the top-selling car in the U.S., with more than 408,000 sold last year.

Bruning Eyeing Run for Neb. Governor

Attorney General Jon Bruning
Attorney General Jon Bruning

(AP) — Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning says his cancer diagnosis last year has led him to reconsider a run for governor.

Bruning said Thursday that he has consulted with family and friends about joining the 2014 Republican primary race. Bruning underwent surgery for colon cancer in December and has since been declared cancer-free.

Bruning had previously announced plans to seek re-election, but he says the cancer scare led him to re-evaluate his priorities in life. He says he also has received numerous phone calls and text messages asking him to look at the race.

The 44-year-old has until the Feb. 18 filing deadline to enter the six-way GOP race to replace Gov. Dave Heineman. If he runs, Bruning would enter the race with immediate statewide name recognition.

Jury Acquits Man of Assault in Kearney Beating

jonathan-schmidt(AP) — A jury has acquitted a man of a first-degree assault charge in connection with the severe beating of a Kearney man last year.

A Buffalo County judge read the not guilty verdict Wednesday for 29-year-old Jonathan Schmidt.

Schmidt was accused of helping to pull Jacob Magee out of a van last July. Prosecutors said Schmidt beat Magee and stomped on his head. He was later treated for injuries that included facial fractures and a broken nose.

Schmidt testified during his trial that he hit a man in the face during the incident, which involved several people. But he denied causing Magee’s injuries.

Schmidt’s public defender, John Marsh of Kearney, says the prosecution had trouble proving who caused Magee’s injuries.

Neb. Considers Law for Robberies with Toy Guns

fake-gun(AP) — Robbers who use a toy gun in a hold-up could still face a felony firearm charge in Nebraska, under a new bill considered by lawmakers.

Sen. Burke Harr of Omaha said Thursday that he introduced the measure because state law doesn’t consider situations involving fake guns or guns that don’t work.

Prosecutors say it’s a problem in cases where a gun is never recovered, and victims can’t say for sure whether they were threatened with a deadly weapon. Defense lawyers say most cases with fake guns already involve charges of robbery or other serious crimes.

The bill could apply to BB guns, pellet guns, paintball guns, squirt guns and replicas.

Car Collides with Truck in NP, 2 Injured

north_platte_patchTwo North Platte women were transported to a local hospital after a car collided with a truck early Thursday morning in North Platte.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, North Platte Police responded to a two-vehicle accident at the unmarked intersection of North Maple and West 1st Street at around 7:30 a.m.

Officers determined that a 2012 Chevy Express Cutaway G3500 truck, owned by the North Platte Public School District, and being driven by 56-year-old Lucinda Hoffman, entered the intersection from the south on Maple.  As the truck entered the intersection, a 2006 Ford Taurus driven by Delores Spaulding entered from the east and the two vehicles collided.

Brown said the collision caused the truck to spin approximately 90 degrees and roll, coming to rest on the driver’s side.

Hoffman had to be assisted out of the vehicle by emergency personnel and both women were transported to Great Plains Regional Medical Center via private vehicle.

Brown said, to his knowledge, none of the injuries were life-threatening.

Two passengers in Spaulding’s vehicle were uninjured.  Damage to the truck was estimated at around $10,000 and the Taurus sustained approximately $5,000 in damage.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene and no citations were reported.

NPCC Names Homecoming King, Queen

npcc-homecoming-royalty-2014North Platte Community College students, staff, and faculty have voted Rascal Martinez of Sutherland and Jacee Kershaw of Culbertson as the 2014 Homecoming King and Queen. Runners up were Dakota Rice of Spirit Lake, Idaho, and Tawnie McConnell of Sutherland.

Martinez, the son of Matt and Pennie Martinez, is focusing on general education and business classes at the college. He chose NPCC because it is close to home. He is also a musical entertainer and owner-operator of Rascals DJ in North Platte. After graduation he hopes to go on a world tour.

Kershaw, the daughter of John and Joyce Kershaw, is focusing on science while at NPCC. She chose the college because she received a volleyball scholarship and says she enjoys the “smaller school feel of NPCC.” Her future plans include attending a university to earn her Bachelor’s Degree, then studying at the University of Nebraska Medical Center to become a Physician’s Assistant.

“With this being the first time we had a Homecoming at NPCC, it was quite amazing,” said Josh York, Assistant Housing Director/Student Activities. “Not only did the crowd see a great game, but they were also the first to see Rascal and Jacee be crowned as King and Queen. Between the crowning, the free cupcakes and the amazing games it was a great night.”

“Homecoming is for the students and they really showed their school spirit by making it a great time for everyone,” he said.

Debate Continues in Neb. Winner-Take-All Bill

NE Legislature(AP) — Nebraska lawmakers are still debating a proposal to reinstate the winner-take-all system for awarding its electoral votes in presidential races.

Lawmakers adjourned for the day on Wednesday before reaching a vote on the bill, which is backed by the Nebraska Republican Party.

Nebraska currently allocates two of its electoral votes to the statewide winner of a presidential election, while three are awarded based on who won in each congressional district.

Nebraska split its electoral votes for the first time in 2008, when Democrat Barack Obama captured one from Omaha’s 2nd congressional district on his way to winning the presidency. The district went to Republican Mitt Romney in 2012, as did the rest of the state.
