No Water, No School for Some Scottsbluff Kids

scottsbluff-public-schools(AP) — There’s no water at Bluffs Middle School in Scottsbluff, so there won’t be any classes either.

A water main break near the school cut service to the school building and the Choices program, which is adjacent to the school. Superintendent Rick Miles says the lack of water forced cancellation of the middle school’s classes for Tuesday. All other Scottsbluff Public Schools will have classes as usual.

Repairs on the 12-inch main are expected to be finished Tuesday.

Wedding Insurance Expands as Nuptials Get Pricier

wedding-rings(AP) — Worried about the groom getting cold feet? There’s an insurance policy for that.

With the cost of the average American wedding reaching about $26,000, insurers have been selling a growing number of policies to protect against losses from extreme weather, illness and even a change of heart.

Cheryl Winter spent $500 for Hartford-based Travelers Cos. Inc. to cover her daughter’s $50,000 destination wedding last October in New Orleans, where her biggest concern was a potential hurricane. The weather cooperated, but the limousine never showed up. She used the insurance policy to claim the deposit money they couldn’t get back from the limo driver.

Travelers says issues with vendors account for about a quarter of claims, with most of those related to issues with photographers or videographers.

McCook Bread Bakery Outlet Closing After 50 Years

old-home-bread(AP) — An outlet bakery in the southwestern Nebraska town of McCook known to many locals as simply “the bread store” is closing its doors after nearly a half-century in business.

Neb. Man Sentenced to Life as Teen Seeks Release

(AP) — A Nebraska man sentenced to life in prison as a teenager for killing a police officer is seeking his freedom in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling striking down such sentences.

Eric McCain is asking a Dawson County District Court judge to order his release from prison.

McCain has been in prison since he was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole at the age of 17 in 1990. He was convicted of first-degree murder for the shooting death that year of Gothenburg Police Sgt. Glenn Haas.

Last year, state lawmakers enacted a measure that ends mandatory life sentences for juveniles who commit first-degree murder. The guidelines now call for a sentence of 40 years to life for juveniles.
