MITCHELL, Neb. (AP) — Officials called in bomb and hazardous-materials experts to check a car that had been parked behind the police station in the Panhandle city of Mitchell.

Mitchell Police Chief Mike Cotant says an officer recognized the man who fled the vehicle as the officer pulled into the parking lot on Tuesday afternoon. The officer raised an alarm when he smelled fuel coming from the vehicle and saw four fuel cans lashed together, sitting on the car’s dashboard.

Cotant says officers couldn’t be sure whether some type of bomb had been set, so he called in experts. A bomb robot searched the vehicle. The experts eventually dismantled items found in the car.

The man who fled has been arrested for driving with a suspended license. His name wasn’t released.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — In what may be a final salute by an Omaha-based organization, three more honor flights of Nebraska veterans of the Korean War will take off in March.

Organizer Bill Williams, of Patriotic Productions, said he’s chartered three jets to carry more than 580 veterans, family members and volunteer guardians to the nation’s capital on March 25. They’ll visit the Korean War and other memorials and take in other sights on their all-expenses-paid journey and return that evening to Omaha.

In October Bill Williams chartered a flight for more 130 Korean War combat veterans who made the Washington tour.

Williams says his organization decided to “do this one big grand deal, and we’re done.”

January 2, 2014 will mark the 65th anniversary of the Blizzard of 1949 – a storm that today still reminds Nebraskans to be prepared before the winter storm strikes.

The historic blizzard hit from January 2nd to the 4th, and was the first winter storm of the year to dump over two feet of snow for some locales. Blizzard impacts were found across four states and in Nebraska.

The blizzard caused thousands of head of livestock lost, and the ones which survived some had to be shoveled out. The storm closed roadways and rails, which included Union Pacific Railroad’s main line that was closed for seven weeks.

Winter storms are considered the deceptive killers. Blizzards produce strong winds that can reach 35 miles per hour or higher. The Blizzard of 1949 produced winds of 50 to 60 mph that created snow drifts over 35 feet. In Brule Nebraska, snow drifts reached an estimated 20 feet at one farmstead.

At the Happy Jacks Convenience Store in Brule, the old timers still remember the storm well. “Anytime a big winter storm is brewing, folks will call for home heating fuel, quickly adding that it could be as bad as the ’49 storm” said Wade Hill, an employee at Happy Jacks.

In North Platte, the Weather Service recorded a three day storm snow total of 16.5 inches in town and 15.4 inches at Lee Bird Field.

The Blizzard of 1949 still remains one of the worst blizzards on record in Nebraska. Through joint efforts in humanitarian missions, lives and livestock were saved through “Operation Haylift” and “Operation Snowbound”. For many areas, it took planes to deliver critical supplies to remote towns.

Today blizzard impacts continue, as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Weather Service, continue to work with partners toward a Weather-Ready Nation. A country prepared to protect, mitigate, respond to and recover from weather-related disasters.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The man severely injured in an unauthorized controlled burn near the Nebraska-South Dakota border in 2012 will receive $550,000 to help pay his medical bills.

The lawsuit Bryan Bluebird Jr. filed against the village of Rushville, its volunteer fire department, Sheridan County and the Sheridan County sheriff was settled last week.

Bluebird’s lawyer, Tom White, says his client is pleased with the result.

Court documents show that fire officials failed to get permission from the landowner or a permit before setting the field on fire. And White says officials failed to search the field thoroughly beforehand.

The attorney who represented fire officials and Rushville, Jeffrey Nix, declined to comment Tuesday. Fire Chief Dwaine Sones didn’t immediately respond to a message.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Businesses, ag producers and cooperatives in Nebraska have received more than $20 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development programs.

USDA Rural Development State Director Maxine Moul says the funding was delivered during the federal government’s 2013 fiscal year. The programs assisted 153 businesses, 75 ag producers and four cooperatives in rural parts of the state.

The USDA says the funding created or saved a total of 258 jobs.

The programs including guaranteed loans, small business grants and funding for renewable energy projects.

Moul says funding is available for fiscal year 2014. The USDA is accepting applications.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Newly released U.S. Census figures show Nebraska is continuing its moderate population growth at roughly the same rate as the nation.

The state had an estimated population of 1,868,516 as of July, for a net gain of about 13,000 people. The estimated growth was 0.7 percent higher than the estimated population in July 2012.

Jerry Deichert of the University of Nebraska Omaha’s Center for Public Affairs Research says the state’s population grew 2.3 percent since the last U.S. Census in 2010. The nation’s population grew by 2.4 percent in the same period.

Deichert says Nebraska is likely continuing a trend of population growth around Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island and Kearney, while most other parts of the state see declines.

Nebraska’s population ranks 38th nationally.

A North Platte woman has been charged with driving under the influence after she got her car high-centered on the concrete guardrail of the Willow Street viaduct.

At around 10:18 p.m. on Sunday, the North Platte Police Department received numerous reports that a car had driven up on the cement guardrail of the viaduct and was high-centered.

Upon arrival, officers determined that the driver, Bonificia Barnhill, had been westbound on 5th street when she attempted to turn right onto Willow Street.

Officers say Barnhill turned too sharply and drove the right wheels of the vehicle onto the cement guardrail at the base of the viaduct.

Investigating officers say there were indications that Barnhill was intoxicated, and they later confirmed their suspicions with a breath test.

Barnhill was arrested for DUI and jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.
