North Platte Firefighters Respond to Blaze on 8th and Willow

NORTH PLATTE-(NORTH PLATTE POST)

Driving past 8th street you may have seen road closures due to a dangerous fire seen at 8th st and Willow in North Platte caused by a stove-top burner left on.

Temperatures in the high 80s made for a dangerous battle with the blaze sending smoke in the air alerting locals of the emergency. North Platte Firefighters responded to the call at 11:45AM Monday June 4th.

All three North Platte Fire Stations responded to the fire, as well as mutual aid from fire stations of Hershey and Stapleton.  Two firefighters were sent to the hospital due to fire exhaustion. The Red Cross was on site with food and refreshments for the firefighters.

The firefighters did a “tremendous job under the conditions” says Assistant Chief Dennis Thompson of The North Platte Fire Department.

The house is being watched to prevent further burning from happening.

Statements, Interviews of Four in Kid-Kenneling Case Suppressed

The case against four adults charged with child abuse and false imprisonment in North Platte last October will have to proceed without statements and interviews given by the defendants because they were not read their Miranda rights after their arrests. Lincoln County District Court Judge Richard Birch suppressed statements and interviews given to Health and Human Services by Lacy Beyer, Ashly Clark, and Samantha and Bryson Eyten after they were arrested October 25. All four were charged with two counts of child abuse and two counts of false imprisonment after police observed two young children sleeping in a wire animal kennel at the mobile home where the defendants lived. The home was full of trash and smelled of urine and feces.

More Surprise Truck Inspections Turn Up 271 Violations

(Omaha, Neb.)- The Nebraska State Patrol, with assistance from the Omaha Police Department, conducted surprise commercial vehicle inspections today, Thursday, May 31, 2012 in Omaha.  The surprise inspections target commercial vehicles that might not travel outside the city or pass through weigh stations as part of their regular routes.

During the special enforcement effort, the Metropolitan Aggressive and Prevention Selective (MAPS) Teams conducted 67 inspections, discovered 271 violations, and took 30 vehicles out of service (not allowed to continue on the road).  Vehicles are placed out of service for a variety of reasons relating to bad brakes or tires, or other problems that pose immediate safety risks. In addition, four drivers were taken out of service (not allowed to continue driving). Officers issued a total of $4,630 in fines.

“The MAPS Team ensures truck operators who rarely leave the city limits are maintaining their vehicles and abiding by safety regulations,” said Colonel David Sankey, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “While most truck owners and operators share our concern for safety, we know some think they can ignore safety standards as long as they avoid the weigh stations. The MAPS Team extends our reach into cities and towns across the state.”

This was the 4th MAPS Team event of 2012. Inspections have also been conducted in Lincoln, Grand Island, and Sarpy County this year.  More surprise inspections are planned throughout the spring and summer in cities and towns across Nebraska.

The MAPS Team is funded largely by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Troopers check for compliance with federal safety regulations and enforce laws pertaining to weight, size, registration, dyed fuels, and permits associated with commercial vehicles. The MAPS Team was implemented in 1998 and consists of 36 troopers from the Nebraska State Patrol Carrier Enforcement Division. On average, 20-24 troopers work each MAPS event.

GPRMC Wins Marketing Award

North Platte – Great Plains Regional Medical Center’s advertising campaign for the cardiology department won a bronze award for excellence from Healthcare Marketing Report this spring.

The print and radio advertising campaign, titled, “Follow Your Heart,” featured the photos and voices of several patients and a statement about how the care they received enabled them to enjoy favorite activities again, like ranching and hunting.

“This campaign was a creative way to highlight our physicians and staff and the exceptional care they provide at Great Plains,” said Marcia Baumann, vice president of growth and development. “Our people make a difference in the lives of patients and families everyday, and awards like this reinforce the tremendous resource GPRMC is for the North Platte community.”

Healthcare Marketing Report is a national newspaper for healthcare marketing, and the publication received nearly 4,000 entries this year. A national panel of judges granted awards to those entries that exemplify exceptional quality, creativity and message effectiveness.

State Patrol Begins “100 Days of Summer” Initiative This Holiday Weekend

(Lincoln, Neb.)- In an effort to reduce the number of serious injury and fatality crashes during the heavily traveled summer months, the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) will kick-off its “100 Days of Summer” initiative starting with the Memorial Day Holiday weekend.

In its fifth year, the “100 Days of Summer” initiative provides motorists an opportunity to view planned NSP enforcement activities. Each day, beginning with the Memorial Day weekend and continuing through Labor Day, the NSP Field Services Division will work to hold at least one traffic safety enforcement operation somewhere in the state.

“It’s all about voluntary compliance with motor vehicle laws,” said Colonel David Sankey, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Through this initiative we are encouraging motorists to partner with us in saving lives by obeying the rules of the road which are designed to keep them safe.”

Motorists are reminded to wear their seat belts, obey the posted speed limit and to never drive impaired or distracted.

Travelers can visit the Nebraska State Patrol website at www.statepatrol.nebraska.gov and click on “NSP Enforcement Activities” in the Quick Links box on the upper right hand side of the home page. The link will display monthly calendars, with each day listing the type and location of the planned special enforcement efforts.
