Nebraska Refuses to Disclose Oil Train Records

oil-trainLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska officials have refused to disclose the details of crude oil shipments railroads haul through the state.

The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency says it plans to keep the information railroads provided confidential.

Officials say the information is proprietary and releasing it could endanger public safety.

Nebraska recently responded to a records request from The Associated Press.

Federal officials say they don’t believe the information railroads provide to states must be withheld to protect the public.

This spring railroads were ordered to notify states about trains carrying at least 1 million gallons of crude oil.

Railroads are under pressure to improve safety after several fiery derailments involving crude oil, including one in a small Canadian city in eastern Quebec where 47 people died last July when 60 cars derailed and exploded.

Health Care Law Will Raise Cost of Medical Claims in Nebraska

obamacareA study by a national group of financial-risk analysts says the federal health care law will raise claims costs in Nebraska’s individual health insurance market by an average of nearly 31 percent.

The Society of Actuaries estimates that President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act will raise claims costs nationally by an average of 32 percent per person in the individual health insurance market by 2017. That’s partly due to sicker people joining the pool.

Medical claims costs are the main driver of health insurance premiums.

The study finds wide disparities among states.

The estimates assume every state will expand its Medicaid program. Gov. Dave Heineman is opposed to expanding Medicaid in Nebraska.

The report did not make similar estimates for employer plans, the mainstay for workers and their families.

Lt. Gov. Sheehy Resigns After Allegedly Using State’s Cell Phone for Shady Calls

Rick-SheehyThe Lt. Governor of Nebraska, Rick Sheehy, has decided to call it quits, following an investigation into his use of a state-issued cell phone.

An Omaha World Herald investigation, found that Sheehy made about 2,000 late-night phone calls to “women other than his wife.”

Gov. Dave Heineman stated Saturday that Sheehy had broken his trust, but would not elaborate on that statement.  Also adding that he would no longer support Sheehy should he continue his campaign.  Sheehy was not present at the press conference, and the Associated Press reports that his state cell phone has been disconnected.

A spokeswoman for the governor’s offices said they are investigating whether Sheehy will need to reimburse the state for the phone calls.  Heineman has already started searching for Sheehy’s replacement.

First the Post, Now Twitter…Hackers Gain Access to 250,000 Twitter User Accounts

twitterHackers have compromised social networking super-giant Twitter, a scenario that the Post is all too familiar with.

Twitter officials say that as many as 250,000 of it’s more than 200 million active user accounts may have been compromised.  Twitter, in a recent blog posting, says attempts to gain access to user accounts were detected this week.  Twitter’s techies were able to shut down one attack moments after it was detected.

However, it was later discovered that attackers may have indeed gained access to it’s user’s data, including usernames, email addresses and encrypted passwords.  Those users affected have been sent an email advising them that Twitter has reset their password, and provides them with a link to create a new one.

Other notable breaches affecting U.S. media and technology companies have occurred in recent weeks.  System breaches were reported by The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal as well.  The hackers are believed to be based in China.

Great Lakes Aircraft Lands Safely at NP Regional Airport After Close Call

great-lakes-airA Great Lakes aircraft has landed safely at North Platte Regional Airport after a close call.

At 2:20pm on January 27, the North Platte 911 Center received a call that a Great Lakes Beach Craft 1900, which carried 17 passengers and 2 pilots, was unable to deploy their landing gear upon approach to Lee Bird Field.  The aircraft circled the airfield while emergency crews were en route.  It is believed, by authorities, that the pilots were able to manually deploy the landing gear and safely land the aircraft.

At 3:00pm, the North Platte Post observed passengers being unloaded safely from the craft and they were greeted by emergency personnel.  According to the North Platte Police Department, no one was transported to the hospital or required any emergency care.

PICTURE: Emergency crews arrive at the safely landed airplane

The response to the emergency by the North Platte Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff and North Platte Fire Department was impressive and handled with extreme organization.  The Post observed approximately 15 emergency vehicles on scene prepared to give aid if needed.

Kearney Man Charged with 30 Counts of Being a Felon with Firearms

Ward-Hunnel

The Kearney Police Department found a small arsenal of weapons in the home of a Kearney man who is a convicted felon.

Charges were filed against Ward Hunnel, 44, of Kearney.  Buffalo County Court Records state that Hunnel was charged with 30 counts of being a felon in possession of firearms-first offense.  A search warrant was served on Hunnel’s home Thursday afternoon by the Kearney Police Department.  Upon execution of the warrant, police found Hunnel to be in possession of 28 rifles and two shotguns.  All 30 counts are Class I-D felonies and are punishable by three to 50 years in prison.

The warrant was issued after police received information on Wednesday that Hunnel had a cache of weapons in his Kearney home.  The warrant was served by members of the Kearney Police Emergency Services Unit.

Kearney Police Chief Dan Lynch told the Kearney Hub that he believes Hunnel is a hunting enthusiast and not a threat to the community.

Hunnel also faces a similar weapons charge in Grant County after being charged with possessing weapons in November.

Hunnel will appear in Buffalo County Court in February.

NE Legislature Sets Hearing on ‘Social Media’ Bill to Prevent Meddling Bosses

facebook-log-onLawmakers have set a hearing for a bill that would prevent bosses from demanding access to private information within their employees’ Facebook or Twitter accounts.

The Legislature’s Business and Labor Committee will hold a hearing on the proposal on Monday.

The bill by Sen. Tyson Larson of O’Neill would make it illegal for employers or potential employers to request the information from a worker or job applicant.

The bill would prevent employers from ordering a worker to log onto a social media site in the employer’s presence. Employers also would be banned from demanding passwords, or accessing an account indirectly through a friend or third party.

The law would not apply to information posted by employees that’s in the public domain.
