Netflix Outage Nixes Christmas Eve Streaming

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Families across the United States will have to rely on other sources of entertainment after Netflix’s video streaming service was hit by a Christmas Eve outage.

The company based in Los Gatos, Calif., apologized in a company tweet for the outage Monday night.

The company says on its Twitter page that the outage was caused by “some of Amazon’s cloud infrastructure.” Netflix says it was working with Amazon engineers to restore the outage, which a company spokesman told the Wall Street Journal stretched “across the Americas.”

Attempts to reach Netflix by The Associated Press were unsuccessful.

The City Of Kearney (KVFD): Keep Your Holidays From Going Up in Flames!

The holiday season represents a time for family festivities and good cheer. The holiday season is also a time when there is an increased risk of home fires. Many households engage in holiday activities that serve as some of the leading causes of home fires. Cooking, Christmas trees, candle usage and holiday decorations significantly contribute to the seasonal causes of home fires. Add to that the hectic nature of the holidays, when people are trying to accomplish multiple tasks at one time, and the chance for home fires grow even further.

With a little added awareness and some minor adjustments to holiday cooking and decorating, the season can remain festive and safe for everybody. By taking some preventative steps and following simple rules of thumb, most home fires can be prevented.

  • Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries:
  •  Stay in the kitchen while you’re frying, grilling or broiling food.
  •  Keep anything that can catch fire away from the stovetop.
  •  Maintain a “kid-free zone” of at least three feet away from the stove .
  • Candles are widely used in homes throughout the holidays and December is the peak month for home candle fires:
  • Consider using flameless candles, they look and smell like real candles.
  • If you use traditional candles, keep them at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn.
  • Blow them out when you leave home, the room, or go to bed.
  • Use sturdy candle holders that won’t tip over and placed on uncluttered surfaces.
  • Avoid using candles in the bedroom or other areas where people may fall asleep.
  • NEVER leave children or pets alone in a room with a burning candle.
  • Christmas trees have caused an average of 250 structure fires annually:
  • An artificial tree should be labeled, certified, or identified by the manufacturer as fire-retardant.
  • If you choose a fresh tree, make sure the green needles don’t fall off when touched. Add water to a sturdy tree stand and be sure to water it daily.
  • Make sure the tree does not block any exits and is at least three feet away from any heat sources.
  • Use lights that have the UL label and that you are sure they are designed for indoor or outdoor use.
  • Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections.
  • We provide services, solutions, and opportunities for our community.
  • NEVER use lit candles to decorate Christmas trees.
  • Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving the home or going to bed.
  • After Christmas, get rid of the natural tree. Dried–out trees are a fire hazard and should not be left in the home or garage or placed outside the home. Take them to the City of Kearney’s Christmas tree recycle sites.

By following these fire prevention tips you can greatly reduce the risk of fire in your home and enjoy a safe holiday season. The holidays can quickly turn from joyful to tragic when a fire occurs. Visit www.nfpa.org/holiday for more information on safety tips.
The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department wishes everyone a safe and Merry Christmas.

Pets For Christmas

Here is my annual letter on surprising someone with a pet for Christmas. If it saves one pet from going to an unwanted home then it’s worth submitting it each year!!
It’s that time of year when we are thinking of what to get people for Christmas and some think a good gift would be a cute cuddly puppy or kitten. Whether buying one from a pet store, a breeder, or adopting from a shelter, this is a decision that needs to be carefully thought out by all that are involved – not just a surprise sprung on the gift recipient. Energy, money and time are involved in pet ownership and some people do not want the responsibility. And there are those that think a puppy or kitten are so cute….until they chew up something, mess in the house, or just simply grow bigger. Then they aren’t so cute anymore and end up at the shelter, or worse, ignored on a chain in the back yard. Please, if you are considering a pet as a gift for someone this Christmas, or anytime of the year, make sure the recipient wants a pet and take them to pick it out together.
And by all means, adopt from an animal shelter. There are so many wonderful loving pets at the shelter that need a home. Not only will you adopt your best friend, you will save a life. Older dogs and cats make wonderful companions, too! Also, please spay and neuter your pets to stop pet over-population. Happy Holidays & God Bless!

Crop Conditions Looking Good For Eastern Nebraska…What About The West?

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Rain has improved crop conditions in eastern Nebraska, while conditions declined in the west because of continued dry weather.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture say bands of showers moved across eastern Nebraska last week bringing over an inch of rain and some hail to some locations. Little or no rain fell in the west.

The weekly report shows 75 percent of the corn and 71 percent of the soybeans are in good or excellent condition. Half the wheat crop is turning color and the harvest will be early this year. Alfalfa and pastures are showing little growth because of the dry conditions.

The USDA says 50 percent of Nebraska’s topsoil and 54 percent of the subsoil is dry.
