east-lansing-police(AP) — A 20-year-old Michigan State University student has died after he and another student were shot in their apartment near the school’s campus.

East Lansing police say Dominique Nolff was pronounced dead at 9:23 a.m. Saturday from multiple gunshot wounds.

The second shooting victim, also 20, has been treated and released from a hospital.

Officers were called about 8:50 p.m. Friday to a report of a shooting at the Cedar Village apartment complex. Nolff and the other student were found inside one of the apartments.

Nolff was from Middleville. The other victim is a Grand Haven resident.

East Lansing police say the suspect being sought was believed to be in his 20s and that the shooting “does not appear to be a random act.”

Suspect in Utah Deputy’s Killing Was Fugitive, 27

police-lights-red(AP) — Authorities say the man accused of killing a Utah deputy and wounding another was a fugitive who previously served prison time for attempted homicide.

Utah County sheriff’s officials identified the shooter as 27-year-old Jose Angel Garcia Juaregui (how-REG’-ee). Authorities say he’s in extremely critical condition after being shot by law enforcement officials Thursday in Juab County, and his prognosis isn’t good.

Officials say Utah County sheriff’s Sgt. Cory Wride had stopped to check on a truck that appeared to be disabled on a two-lane highway Thursday afternoon. He was using his computer to do a background check when he was shot from the truck and killed.

Sheriff Jim Tracy says the suspect clashed with officers and shot another deputy in the head during a 50-mile chase. That deputy is in critical condition.

Courtesy Maricopa County Animal Care and Control(AP) — An Arizona animal shelter has a rather large cat on its hands.

The Maricopa County Animal Care and Control recently received a 36-pound cat at one of its shelters in the Phoenix area.

The cat named “Meatball” is temporarily staying in an office at the shelter because he’s too large to fit into a standard kennel.

The cat is not available for adoption.

Instead, the shelter is trying to place him with a rescue organization that helps overweight cats.

The shelter says Meatball is extremely friendly and says he can comfortably walk despite his weight.

Wisconsin Dad Who Starved Daughter to Be Sentenced

gavel-more(AP) — A father convicted of locking his teenage daughter in the basement of their Wisconsin home and starving her faces sentencing.

The 42-year-old Madison father was convicted of child abuse and other charges in November. He was also found guilty of felony child neglect in March. At one point the teen weighed just 68 pounds.

He faces a maximum sentence of 28 years in prison when he’s sentenced Wednesday afternoon in Dane County.

The girl’s stepmother was sentenced in July to five years in prison for reckless endangerment and causing mental harm to a child. The girl’s stepbrother is set to stand trial in February to face accusations that he sexually abused the teen.

The Associated Press isn’t naming anyone in the family to avoid identifying the girl.

Cali. Boy, 14, Surrenders After Shooting of Sister

crime-scene-police-shoot(AP) — Police in California say a 14-year-old boy wanted in connection with the shooting death of his older sister has turned himself in.

Oakland police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said Wednesday that the teen was accompanied by several family members, including his father, when he surrendered at Oakland police headquarters. Watson says he is being interviewed by detectives.

The boy’s father had publicly pleaded with the teen, who was considered armed and dangerous, to turn himself in. His surrender came after investigators spent hours talking to his family and friends.

The Associated Press normally doesn’t name minors suspected of crimes.

Sheriff: 3 Dead in Western Colo. Helicopter Crash

garfield-county-colorado-sheriff(AP) — A helicopter crashed in western Colorado Monday, killing all three people aboard, authorities said.

Garfield County Sheriff’s Deputy Ward Stowe said his office could not immediately release the names of those killed in the crash near Silt. Witnesses who saw the crash believe the helicopter was carrying a crew inspecting power lines, and that the helicopter snagged a line, Stowe said.

Stowe said the helicopter bore no identifying marks, so it wasn’t immediately clear who owned it or who might have been operating it.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer said that according to preliminary information, the helicopter was being used by a power company for survey work and struck power lines before the crash.

Kenitzer said the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating.

Family: Brain Dead Woman Taken Off of Life Support

marlisa-munoz(AP) — The family of a brain-dead, pregnant Texas woman says she has been removed from life support following a judge’s ruling that a Fort Worth hospital was misapplying state law in the case.

A statement sent by lawyers for the husband of Marlisa Munoz on Sunday afternoon says she was disconnected from life support about 11:30 a.m.

It says her body was released to her husband, Erick Munoz, and that the family is now looking to lay her to rest.

A judge had given John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth hospital until 5 p.m. Monday to comply with his ruling to remove Marlisa Munoz from life support.

J.R. Labbe, a hospital spokeswoman, issued a statement earlier Sunday saying the hospital would follow the order.

The attack took place at a skateboard shop called Zumiez on the upper level of the Mall in Columbia, a suburb of both Baltimore and Washington, according to Howard County Police Chief William J. McMahon.

McMahon said authorities ran into difficulty in identifying the gunman because of concerns that he might be carrying explosives.

The two victims were a man and a woman, both in their 20s. They were employees of the shop where the attack occurred. Their names were not released.

Five other people were injured, none seriously.

Hospital Ordered to Remove Pregnant Woman from Life Support

gavel-and-scale(AP) — For two months, Erick Munoz has sat inside a North Texas hospital room with his wife’s brain-dead body, with what would be their second child together growing inside her.

Now a judge has ruled that the hospital must follow Munoz’s wishes and disconnect Marlise Munoz from life support. The hospital has refused to remove life support in hopes of saving the fetus inside her.

The judge’s ruling Friday could allow Erick Munoz to bury his wife and move forward to care for their son and his relatives.

It would also mean the fetus would never be born.

Judge R. H. Wallace Jr. gave John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth until 5 p.m. CST Monday to remove life support. The hospital did not immediately say Friday whether it would appeal.
