Police: Utah Officer Kills 4 Family Members, Self

crime-scene(AP) — Authorities say a 34-year-old Utah police officer fatally shot his wife, mother-in-law and two young children before taking his own life.

Spanish Fork police say they went to Joshua Boren’s house about 11 p.m. Thursday after he didn’t show up to his night shift at the Lindon Police Department.

That’s when they found Boren’s 55-year-old mother-in-law Marie King dead in a bedroom, and Joshua Boren’s immediately family dead in the bedroom next door.

The victims were identified as 32-year-old Kelly Boren, 7-year-old Joshua “Jaden” Boren and 5-year-old Haley Boren.

Spanish Fork Lt. Matthew Johnson says the couple had been experiencing marital problems in the past few months, but co-workers say Boren appeared upbeat and didn’t show signs of distress before the killings.

Officials say they didn’t find a suicide note.

Target Breach Appears to Be Part of Broader Scam

target-stores(AP) — The security breach that hit Target Corp. during the crucial holiday season seemed to be part of a broader scam that affected several retailers, according to a report published by a global cyber intelligence firm that works with the U.S. Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security.

The report, released Thursday by iSight Partners of Dallas, offers more insight into the breach at Target, which affected 40 million credit and debit card accounts and stole the personal information of as many as 70 million customers.

The report confirms that a malicious software that infiltrated the point of sale system at the registers was “almost certainly derived” from BlackPOS, a crude but effective software product.

Last week, Neiman Marcus said it was hit by a security breach over the holidays.

accidental-shooting(AP) — Detroit police say a 4-year-old girl accidentally shot a 4-year-old boy to death at a home on the city’s west side.

Police Capt. Rodney Cox said the shooting happened Thursday afternoon. Police say the girl and boy and a 5-year-old were playing in a bedroom and found the gun.

Cox also said an adult was in the home at the time, though it’s not yet clear exactly where.

The Associated Press left a telephone message for Detroit police Thursday night seeking information.

Govt. Charges Wal-Mart with Labor Violations

walmart(AP) — Federal officials have filed a formal complaint charging that Wal-Mart violated the rights of protesting and striking workers last year.

The National Labor Relations Board says Wal-Mart illegally fired, disciplined or threatened more than 60 employees in 14 states for participating in legally protected activities to complain about wages and working conditions.

The labor board’s general counsel first laid out the charges last November, but held off on filing a complaint while trying to work out a settlement with Wal-Mart. The company has insisted its actions were legal and justified.

The complaint will go before an administrative law judge. If Wal-Mart is found liable, it could be required to award workers back pay, reinstatement and reverse any disciplinary action.

Ford Recalls 27,933 Edge Crossovers

Ford-Edge(AP) — Ford Motor Co. is recalling 27,933 Edge crossovers in the U.S. because a damper in the fuel line could crack and cause fuel leaks.

The recall involves Edges from the 2012 and 2013 model years with 2.0-liter engines. All of the vehicles were produced between September 2010 and April 2013.

Ford said an improper manufacturing process could cause the damper to crack, resulting in fuel odor or leakage. Fuel leaks can lead to a vehicle fire.

Ford said it discovered the problem through warranty claims. There have been no reports of fires or injuries related to the defect.

Ford dealers will repair the fuel lines for free. The company will begin notifying owners next month.

(AP) — A litter of kittens has found a cozy home in the least cozy of places — a maximum-security prison in upstate New York.

Four kittens found their way into the basement of the Great Meadow Correctional Facility in Fort Ann a few months ago. That’s near the Vermont border 55 miles northeast of Albany.

The family of feral felines has been cared for by inmates and prison staff, including head electrician Bruce Porter. He arrives at work early so he can tend to the cats, which live in a large cage built by an inmate.

Another inmate takes care of the cats on weekends when many prison employees are off.

Prison officials say they’re hoping to find the kittens homes among the staff.

Houston Man Pleads Guilty to Killing His 3 Children

gavel-and-scale(AP) — A Houston man has pleaded guilty to capital murder for the shooting deaths of his three children in 2010 when he was locked in a custody dispute with the children’s mother.

Fifty-year-old Mohammad Goher entered his pleas Wednesday in exchange for a sentence of life without parole.

Court records show Goher admitted to shooting 14-year-old Saeedah, 12-year-old Saeed and 7-year-old Aisha while they slept at his apartment in September 2010.

The Houston Chronicle cites investigators in reporting (http://bit.ly/1a7KLO1 ) that Goher and his wife were divorcing and waging a custody battle when he killed the children.

After shooting them he turned the gun on himself but survived a gunshot wound to the head.

Officials: Dad Threw Toddler Over Hotel Balcony

florida-department-of-children-and-families(AP) — Authorities say a father threw his 2-year-old son off a second-floor, hotel balcony in central Florida before jumping himself.

Kissimmee police responded to the Budget Inn around 2 a.m. Tuesday. A Department of Children and Families news release says Juan Pablo Maradiaga will face an attempted murder charge.

DCF says the toddler suffered multiple injuries including several fractures, but is expected to recover.

The department says the 41-year-old Maradiaga was also hospitalized, but his condition was not known.

DCF is in the early stages of its investigation and has not made any changes in the child’s custody. The agency said in a statement that the child will remain safely in the hospital while they complete their assessment.

The agency has not had any prior contact with the child.

Governor Says Teacher Ended NM School Shooting

school-shootingROSWELL, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez say a 12-year-old who shot two classmates in a Roswell middle school was stopped by a teacher who walked up to him and asked him to put down his shotgun.

Martinez says one student was critically injured and another is in serious condition following Tuesday morning’s shooting at Berrendo Middle School.

State police say the shooter was a seventh grader.

Martinez says the student walked into the gym where students were gathered for class and shot a boy and a girl.

She says a teacher “quickly stopped” the suspect by walking up to him and asking him to put down the firearm, which he did.

The governor says a staff member received very minor injuries but declined medical care because he wanted to stay and help.

Hospital officials say the boy who was shot is 11 and the girl is 13.

62 Dogs Found in Minivan Broken Down in Ohio

police-lights-red(AP) — Authorities say an Indiana dog breeder whose minivan broke down in central Ohio was transporting 62 dogs, some four or five to a crate.

Licking County Humane Society Executive Director Lori Carlson says the animals were stacked “bottom to top” in the van when it was discovered in the parking lot of a hotel in Hebron, east of Columbus, on Saturday afternoon.

Carlson said the dogs, some just a few weeks old, had coats covered with feces and urine.

The driver reported being hired by the breeder to take the 50 adult dogs and 12 puppies to an animal rescue in New Jersey. They now are in Ohio animal shelters.

The county prosecutor’s office will consider charges in the case.
