Oklahoma Man Proposes to Girlfriend While Being Arrested

justin-harrelELK CITY, Okla. (AP) — Talk about a marriage proposal to remember.

An Oklahoma man proposed to his girlfriend last week while an officer tried to arrest him on two outstanding warrants.

Police say an officer spotted Justin Harrel in a park and discovered that the Elk City man had two outstanding warrants out of two counties.

Police say Harrel resisted arrest at first. When the officer took him into custody, Harrel explained that he was about to propose to his girlfriend and asked if he could go ahead with the proposal.

The officer says he allowed Harrel to complete the marriage proposal — Harrel’s girlfriend eventually said yes. Harrel then asked the officer to get the engagement ring from his coat pocket and give it to her.

The officer handed the ring to the girlfriend.

2 Mississippi Brothers Kidnapped, One’s Throat Slashed

police-lights-redJACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Authorities say a man lured two brothers, ages 5 and 8, from their yard in south Mississippi and took them to his camper trailer, where he sexually abused them and slashed the older boy’s throat.

Don Bass, chief deputy with Hancock County sheriff’s office, says the boy is expected to survive the Wednesday attack.

Bass says the older brother escaped the suspect’s trailer Wednesday evening and ran to a neighbor’s house. The neighbor called police.

Bass says the children were abducted from a residence in Pearl River County.

Bass identified the suspect as 41-year-old James Smith.

Officials and court records say Smith was released from prison to house arrest in June after serving a few months of a lengthy sentence for racketeering.

ABC Asks Judge to Throw Out ‘Pink Slime’ Lawsuit

pink-slimeELK POINT, S.D. (AP) — A lawyer for ABC is asking a judge to throw out a defamation suit over its coverage of a meat product called lean, finely textured beef.

Beef Products Inc. in South Dakota sued ABC and ABC News Inc. last year over the network’s reports about the product critics have dubbed “pink slime.”

The Dakota Dunes-based meat processor claims the network damaged the company by misleading consumers into believing the product is unhealthy and unsafe. BPI is seeking $1.2 billion in damages.

Judge Cheryle Gering says she’ll issue a written ruling later.

ABC attorney Kevin Baine says the network in each of its broadcasts stated that the Food and Drug Administration deemed the product safe to eat.

But BPI attorney Eric Connolly says said those statements were coupled with negative context.

Judge Dismisses Monster Beverage’s Lawsuit vs. San Francisco

MonsterSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal judge has tossed out a lawsuit filed by Monster Beverage Corp. that sought to block the San Francisco city attorney’s investigation into the company’s marketing practices.

U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips in Riverside ruled Monday that granting Monster’s request would unfairly hinder a lawsuit San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera filed in state court. That suit accuses the company of misbranding its highly caffeinated drinks and marketing them to children.

Monster filed its lawsuit after the city attorney demanded that the company reduce caffeine levels in its drinks and stop marketing to minors.

The Corona, Calif., company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The energy drink industry, which includes Red Bull, 5-Hour Energy and PepsiCo’s Amp, has come under increasing scrutiny over the past few years over possible health risks.

RV Users Help Amazon Keep Up with the Holiday Rush

amazonCAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Twinkling lights, decorated trees and bustling campgrounds. Those are signs of the Christmas season in Campbellsville, Ky., where the Amazon.com distribution center recruits an armada of RV owners as seasonal workers to help fill holiday orders.

They’re dubbed the “CamperForce” by the world’s largest online retailer. The hundreds of temporary workers are assigned packing, sorting and collection duties at Amazon facilities in Kentucky, Kansas and Nevada, roles meant to keep orders flowing during the yuletide rush.

Swarms of workers take up temporary residence in campgrounds. For many, it’s another short-term stint on a nonstop journey. It’s a lifestyle and mindset for the retirees, empty nesters and younger parents who shuck traditions of home and work to roam from campsite to campsite, job to job.

The stints last about three months.

Studies: Some Cancer Treatments Can Be Skipped

Medical-ChartSAN ANTONIO (AP) — New research says tens of thousands of women each year might be able to skip at least some of the grueling treatments for breast cancer without greatly harming their odds of survival.

The research is aimed at curbing overtreatment, a big problem in cancer care.

Breast cancer treatments include surgery, radiation, heavy chemo, hormones or some combination.

But those can be expensive and traumatic and can cause lifelong problems such as arm swelling, heart troubles and even new cancers.

One of the new studies suggests that many women 65 and older can skip radiation after surgery for early-stage tumors.

Group Wants Fisher Price iPad Bouncy Seat Recall

ipad-bouncy-seatWASHINGTON (AP) — Ahh, the first year of a baby’s life — the milestones, wonder and joy. They learn to sit up, crawl and some walk. But how about playtime in their bouncy seat with an iPad and some cool apps?

Fisher-Price is selling a baby bouncy seat with an attachment where parents can insert an iPad so baby can watch video content aimed at the youngest children — an idea that is being criticized by the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood.

The Boston-based advocacy group wants Fisher-Price to recall its Newborn-to-Toddler Apptivity Seat for iPads. The group says it’s not healthy for a baby’s development and encourages parents to leave baby alone.

A reporter’s telephone and email messages seeking company comment were left with a spokesperson for Mattel, Fisher-Price’s parent company.
