800-Yard-Long Drug Tunnel Found Between Mexico and San Diego

dept.-of-justiceSAN DIEGO (AP) — Federal officials in San Diego say they have discovered an 800-yard-long secret tunnel under the U.S.-Mexico border, resulting in the seizure of more than a ton of cocaine and seven tons of marijuana.

The U.S. attorney’s office said Wednesday that the tunnel extends from a house in Tijuana, Mexico, to a fenced lot in a San Diego industrial area.

The tunnel was equipped with a rail system, ventilation, lights and a large elevator.

The tunnel exit on the U.S. side is about 3 feet wide and was covered by a trash bin. About 500 yards of the tunnel are on the U.S. side of the border.

Officials say six people were arrested in San Diego on Friday and charged with crimes involving drugs and construction of the tunnel.

US Officials: The More We Learn About Zika, the Scarier It is

mosquitoWASHINGTON (AP) — Top health officials say the more they learn about Zika, the scarier the virus appears and they still need more money to fight the mosquitoes that spread it — and for research into vaccines and treatments.

Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health says he’s “not an alarmist,” but he cites recent discoveries about how destructive Zika appears to be to fetal brains. There also are reports of rare neurologic problems in adults, too.

The Obama administration is using some leftover money from the Ebola fight to pay for Zika research but that’s just a fraction of the $1.9 billion it sought from Congress.

Fauci says the $589 million now available is a “temporary stopgap” and it’s “not enough for us to get the job done.”

Cops: Mom Tortured Son, 2, with Cigarette, Boyfriend Laughed

child-abuseEAST PITTSBURGH, Pa. (AP) — Police say a Pennsylvania woman tortured her 2-year-old son with at least 15 cigarette burns while her boyfriend watched and laughed.

Police say the burns were inflicted on Aug. 1 and were discovered a week later when the boy’s grandmother took him to a hospital. Doctors told police the burns were “administered deliberately, in a chronological order, over a very short period of time in one sitting.”

Police have since interviewed the boy’s 3-year-old sister who told them Russell burned the boy while Soto watched and laughed.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for the East Pittsburgh couple, who face a preliminary hearing April 19.

Global Research Sees Statin Benefits in Lower Risk Patients

Medical-ChartCHICAGO (AP) — The first major research of its kind shows that cholesterol-lowering statins can prevent heart attacks and strokes in a globally diverse group of older people who don’t have heart disease.

The results from 21 countries bolster recommendations on who should consider taking the drugs.

The aim was to prevent heart disease using a statin alone, blood pressure drugs or a combination of the two. The patients in the study did not have heart disease and faced lower risks of developing it, and the statin approach worked best.

The research was published online Saturday in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at an American College of Cardiology meeting in Chicago.

DA: Boy, 15, Who Shot Brother Was Interested in the Same Girl

crime-scene-police-shootWILLIAMSTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a 15-year-old Pennsylvania boy fatally shot his 18-year-old brother because both were interested in the same girl.

Dakota Thornton has been jailed and charged as an adult with criminal homicide and possessing an instrument of crime.

Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico says Thornton shot his brother, Dominick, shortly before 2 a.m. Wednesday.

State police say Thornton told them he loaded a .410-gauge shotgun a couple minutes before the shooting.

A criminal complaint says Thornton told police he “shot and killed his brother over the fact that he was romantically interested in his brother’s girlfriend.”

The shooting occurred at their home in Williamstown, about 30 miles northeast of Harrisburg.

Online court records don’t list an attorney who could comment for Thornton. He has a preliminary hearing April 27.

3 Children Killed in 2-Car Crash at Dallas Intersection
