NEW YORK (AP) — More than 15,000 toy police cars are being recalled because they can come apart and pose a possible choking risk to kids.

The Police Press & Go toy car is a white and blue plastic car with the head of a police officer coming out of the roof. When the head is pressed down, the car moves forward on its own. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said it received one report of the blue hat on the police officer’s head coming off. No injuries were reported.

The car is made by toy company Schylling, which is based in Rowley, Massachusetts. Schylling is offering owners of the car a refund if they contact the company through its website, schylling.com, or call 800-767-8697.

The car was sold at toy and gift stores for $5 since April 2010. About 13,200 of the toy cars are in the U.S., and about 2,100 are in Canada, the CPSC said.

Gas Prices Still Look Low for Summer Even After Spring Surge

gas-cardNEW YORK (AP) — Drivers who have seen a steady rise in the price of gasoline can relax: They will almost certainly be paying far less for gas this summer than they have in at least six years.

The Energy Department said Tuesday that it expects the price of gasoline to average $2.55 between April and September, which would be the lowest since 2009. Over the course of the year, a typical U.S household could save $675 in gasoline prices compared to last year.

The coming summer of cheap gas was set up by a collapse in oil prices that ended in mid-March at $43 a barrel. That took gasoline prices down to $2.03 a gallon, a level the nation hadn’t seen since it was deep in recession in March of 2009.

Man Gets Life Term for Killing Dad, Burying Him Under Porch

jailBRIDGETON, N.J. (AP) — A southern New Jersey man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his father and burying him under the back porch of their home.

Dreu Ferguson Jr. was convicted of aggravated manslaughter in March by a Cumberland County jury that also acquitted him of murder. The 39-year-old Millville man was also found guilty of tampering with evidence and desecrating or concealing human remains.

Authorities have said Ferguson killed his 58-year-old father, Dreu Ferguson Sr., in May 2009 after they argued over the lid of a teapot.

Prosecutors argued at trial that Ferguson buried his father in lime and fertilizer under their back porch. But a forensic pathologist testifying for the defense said the man may have died of natural causes.

North Carolina Officer Burned by Free Coffee Sues Starbucks

starbucks-coffeeRALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A Raleigh police officer who got a free cup of Starbucks coffee is suing the company for $50,000 after he spilled it and got burned.

Attorneys said in court Monday that Matthew Kohr should be compensated for burns, blisters and emotional damage caused after the officer spilled a cup of coffee in his lap in 2012.

Kohr says in the lawsuit the lid popped off a cup of coffee he ordered at a Raleigh Starbucks and the cup collapsed. Kohr claims the incident caused such severe stress it activated his Crohn’s disease which resulted in surgery to remove part of his intestine. The lawsuit also claims Kohr’s wife, Melanie, lost a “source of emotional support, her social companion and her intimate partner.”

Jury selection in the case is underway.

Pentagon Accused of Hiding Sex Crimes Info

the-pentagon-2WASHINGTON (AP) — A senator leading a push to tighten policy on military sex assaults says the number of sex-related crimes in military communities is far greater than the Defense Department has publicly reported.

In a report released Monday, Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand (KEER’-sten JIHL’-uh-brand) says the spouses of service members and civilian women who live or work near military facilities are especially vulnerable to sexual assault.

The New York senator says they “remain in the shadows” because neither is counted in surveys conducted by the Defense Department to determine the prevalence of sexual assaults within the ranks.

The Defense Department says it is making progress against sexual assaults. It estimates sex crimes are decreasing and victims are more confident offenders will be held accountable.

Supreme Court Rejects Inmate’s Appeal for Sex-Change Surgery

supreme-courtWASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from a convicted murderer in Massachusetts who has been seeking taxpayer-funded sex-reassignment surgery in prison.

The justices did not comment Monday in letting stand a lower-court ruling against Michelle Kosilek. The prison inmate was born Robert Kosilek and is serving a life sentence for killing spouse Cheryl Kosilek in 1990.

The inmate has waged a lengthy fight for the surgery she says is necessary to relieve the mental anguish caused by gender-identity disorder.

Last year, a divided federal appeals court in Boston overturned a first-in-the-nation court order for the state to provide the sex-reassignment surgery. Courts around the country have found that prisons must evaluate transgender inmates to determine their health care needs, but most have ordered hormone treatments and psychotherapy, not surgery.

Arizona Girl Dies After Swing Set Breaks Suddenly

ambulance-lightsGILBERT, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities in a Phoenix suburb say a 7-year-old girl is dead and a 14-year-old girl is hospitalized after a backyard swing set broke apart.

Gilbert polices Sgt. Jesse Sanger says firefighters responded to a home around 9:30 a.m. Sunday and found both girls with head injuries.

Sanger says the 14-year-old was on the wooden swing and the younger girl was standing nearby when it snapped at the base. He says both were knocked into a swimming pool.

The 7-year-old died while being airlifted to a hospital. Sanger did not know the 14-year-old’s condition but said she also suffered damage to her shoulder.

Neither girl lived at the home nor were they related.

Sanger says there were adults present and so far, it appears to be a very unfortunate accident.

Student Charged with Lacing Teacher’s Coffee with Saline

police-lights-redBERKELEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey high school student accused of lacing his Spanish teacher’s iced coffee with saline solution has been charged with aggravated assault.

Authorities say it happened Tuesday morning at Central Regional High School in Berkeley Township. They say the student was released to his parents’ custody, pending a juvenile court hearing.

School officials say the teacher had gone into a hallway, leaving her coffee at her desk, when the student poured a few drops of saline solution into the cup. The teacher drank the coffee and started feeling stomach discomfort. She was treated at a hospital.

Ingesting saline solution can lead to nausea, vomiting, restricted breathing and a coma.

FDA Approves Injection for Melting Away Chin Fat

double-chinNEW YORK (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration says it approved an injection designed to melt away double-chin fat.

The agency Wednesday approved a drug called Kybella for adults with moderate or severe fat below the chin, or submental fat. It’s the first approved drug for Kythera Biopharmaceuticals.

The drug is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a chemical the FDA says is naturally produced by the body and helps it absorb fats. It destroys fat cells by breaking down the cell membrane.

Kythera plans to start selling Kybella in the second half of 2015, and says in regulatory filings that it thinks the injection could top $500 million in annual sales. The Westlake, California, company says deoxycholic acid is a safe ingredient already found several other approved drugs.

Texas A&M Galveston Professor Fails Entire Class

texas-am-galvestonGALVESTON, Texas (AP) — A Texas A&M Galveston professor has failed every student in his strategic management class, berating them via email as a disgrace to the school.

Irwin Horwitz sent the email Thursday informing them of their failing grades and saying he’ll no longer teach the class.

The email said he’s reached “breaking point.” Horwitz accused the students of backstabbing and cheating, and said they lack maturity.

Some students told the television station the email came as a shock and voiced concern it could impact their career prospects.

University official Patrick Louchouarn says the failing grades won’t stick because the students haven’t finished the course and grades are applied on completion.

The department head will take over the class until the end of the semester.
