Blind Dog Rescued After Being Lost for 2 Weeks In the Cold

good-newsFAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) — A blind dog who wandered away from her Ester home during a cold snap has been reunited with her owner.

The 11-year-old Labrador retriever named Madera ventured away from home on Feb. 6, when the temperature dipped below 40 degrees.

Her owner Ed Davis says he didn’t expect to find her alive.

A man riding a bike accompanied by a bell-wearing dog located Madera in the woods last week, about a half-mile from the Davis’ home.

Davis says his dog lost 14 pounds but is in good health.

The man who rescued her, Constantine Khrulev, asked for the $100 reward money to go to the Fairbanks Animal Shelter Fund. Davis increased the donation to $250.

Madera is completely blind because of an autoimmune disease.

Police: Man, 60, Crushed to Death at Ohio Machine Shop

ambulance-lightsAKRON, Ohio (AP) — Police say a 60-year-old man has been crushed to death at a machine shop in Ohio.

An Akron police spokesman said the accident occurred sometime between 10 p.m. Friday and around 4:45 a.m. Saturday, when co-workers found him. The spokesman says co-workers used a crane to lift a large metal frame off the victim.

The spokesman would not identify the man but said he lived in the Akron suburb of Green.

The accident occurred at Logan Machine Co. Calls to the company seeking comment on the accident weren’t answered on Saturday.

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration proposed $66,000 in penalties against the company in 2012 for eight serious safety violations and seven serious health violations.

Labs Extend Record as US Top Dog, But Bulldogs Make Waves

labradorNEW YORK (AP) — The American Kennel Club is releasing its 2014 breed popularity rankings on Thursday.

They show Labrador retrievers reigned as the nation’s top dog for the 24th year. They broke poodles’ decades-old record in 2013.

But bulldogs have hit a new high: No. 4. Their smaller, bat-eared cousins, French bulldogs, sauntered into the top 10 for the first time in nearly a century. They’re now No. 9.

German shepherds, golden retrievers and beagles are holding their own in the top five. Yorkshire terriers, poodles, boxers and Rottweilers fill out the top 10.

Dachshunds slipped from 10th to 11th.

The AKC doesn’t release raw numbers, only rankings. They reflect puppies and other newly registered dogs.

Official: Body Found is Missing California Baby

police-lights-redKNIGHTS LANDING, Calif. (AP) — Police say the body of a baby found in a swampy area in Northern California is that of a 20-day-old boy who was reported missing Monday.

Yolo County sheriff’s Capt. Dale Johnson tells the Sacramento Bee there is no early indication that the death of the infant, Justice Rees, is a homicide.

The baby’s body was found Wednesday near the Sacramento River.

Justice’s 23-year-old mother, Samantha Green, was also reported missing Monday but turned up late Tuesday afternoon on a nearby levee along the river.

Police said earlier that they didn’t suspect foul play.

DC Mayor: City to Legalize Pot Despite Threats from Congress

marijuana-jointWASHINGTON (AP) — Washington’s mayor says marijuana will become legal in the nation’s capital despite a threat from Republicans in Congress that city leaders could face prison time for implementing a voter-approved initiative.

Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser said Wednesday that the city and Republicans disagree about whether the city is allowed to legalize pot. She says those legal differences can be resolved without either side “bullying” the other.

Possession of up to 2 ounces of pot for recreational purposes will become legal on Thursday at 12:01 a.m. The District will become the first place east of the Mississippi River with legal pot. Selling the drug will remain illegal.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, a Utah Republican, says Congress explicitly banned legalization and that the city will face repercussions.

Lawsuit Against Purina Claims Food Sickens, Kills Dogs

purinaSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A dog owner has filed a lawsuit against a pet food company alleging that thousands of dogs have been sickened or died from eating the company’s dry dog food.

Pet owner Frank Lucid filed the suit in federal court on Feb. 5 against Nestle Purina PetCare Company.

Lucido is just one of 3,000 people who complained online about the dog food. He claims he fed his three dogs Beneful, and in a month, two were sick and one was dead.

The suit alleges the food contains an animal toxin used in antifreeze. Purina says on its website it uses “an FDA-approved food additive.” Purina issued a statement saying “there are no quality issues with Beneful.”

The suit asks that Purina pay Lucido and others unspecified damages and restitution.

Montana Man Pleads Guilty to Killing Grandmother with Chair

Jail-Bars-and-Cuffs_mediumMISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — A Montana man has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to beating his grandmother to death with a chair in December 2013, shortly after he was released from the state psychiatric hospital.

Tyler Dan Perry entered his plea to deliberate homicide Tuesday under a deal with prosecutors.

Deputy Missoula County Attorney Jason Marks says the plea agreement calls for a 60-year commitment to the psychiatric hospital when Perry is sentenced on May 12.

Prosecutors charged the 25-year-old Perry with killing his 72-year-old grandmother, Carol Perry, while she was lying on the couch watching television.

Court records say Tyler Perry told investigators his grandmother had a “third eye” and that “everybody knew we had to bash her over the head.”

Man Convicted in Deaths of ‘American Sniper’ Author, Friend

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (AP) — A former Marine has been convicted in the deaths of “American Sniper” author Chris Kyle and Kyle’s friend at a shooting range.

Jurors returned the verdict Tuesday against Eddie Ray Routh, whose attorneys had mounted an insanity defense and said he suffered from psychosis. Since prosecutors didn’t seek the death penalty in the capital murder case, the 27-year-old receives an automatic life sentence without parole in the deaths of the famed Navy SEAL and Chad Littlefield.

The men had taken Routh out shooting in February 2013 after Routh’s mother asked Kyle to help him. Family members say Routh suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in Iraq and in Haiti.

The case drew intense interest, largely because of the blockbuster film based on Kyle’s memoir about his four Iraq tours.

Alaska Quietly Becomes 3rd State to Legalize Marijuana

marijuana-budJUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Alaska today became the third U.S. state to legalize the recreational use of marijuana for adults, and it has been a subdued milestone.

Unlike in Colorado and Washington state, there have been no street parties or public smoking displays in Alaska’s biggest cities.

But backers of legal pot said the mild reaction was fitting because they are aiming to promote responsible consumption of marijuana as they work with lawmakers during the next few months in preparing its sale.

Pot advocate Bruce Schulte says he hopes people consume responsibly, and not illegally by smoking in public. He says he wants to see the industry thrive in a responsible, regulated fashion, and he says part of that is responsible consumption.

Police in Anchorage were prepared to hand out fines, but as of late Tuesday morning, none has been issued by overnight officers.
