STEPHENVILLE, Texas (AP) — Prosecutors are expected to rest their case Tuesday in the trial of the former Marine accused in the fatal shootings of “American Sniper” author Chris Kyle and his friend.

Eddie Ray Routh has confessed to the February 2013 slayings but has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Defense attorneys say Routh was insane when Kyle and Chad Littlefield took him to a shooting range to provide support and camaraderie. Prosecutors say he knew his actions were wrong and should be convicted of capital murder. They aren’t seeking the death penalty.

In a video confession shown to jurors Monday, 27-year-old Routh told Texas Ranger Danny Briley that he shot Kyle first and added, “I’m just sorry for what I’ve done.”

Briley testified Monday that Routh said he knew his actions were wrong.

Police: Man Mad at Video Game Shakes 3-Month-Old Baby

child-abuseNEWPORT, N.H. (AP) — Police in Newport, New Hampshire, say a man has been accused of shaking his 3-month-old son twice, allegedly out of aggression toward a video game system.

Jerry Carrier faces two charges of first-degree assault and was to be arraigned Tuesday. It wasn’t immediately known if he had a lawyer.

Police said the baby was taken from Newport to a hospital in January. Two weeks later, police said they responded to a similar incident in Charlestown; this time, the child was found unresponsive. His injuries were found to be from non-accidental trauma.

The baby is in state custody.

Police said the 26-year-old Carrier told them he shook the baby twice out of aggression toward a video game system.

Report: Many Sex Offenders Killed in California Prisons

prisonSACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Federal statistics show California prison inmates are killed at a rate that is double the national average and far higher than that of other large states.

What’s more, an Associated Press analysis of corrections records shows that sex offenders account for a disproportionate number of California’s victims.

Male sex offenders made up about 15 percent of the prison population but accounted for nearly 30 percent of homicide victims since 2007.

The deaths — 23 out of 78 — come despite the state’s creation more than a decade ago of special housing units designed to protect the most vulnerable inmates, including sex offenders. They often are marked men because of the nature of their crimes.

Those units also house inmates trying to quit gangs but now have their own gang problem.

17-Year-Old Killed During Russian Roulette Game

russian-rouletteCARSON, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says a 17-year-old boy shot and killed himself early Monday during what they are describing as a game of Russian roulette with other teens.

Deputies responding to a call about a gunshot in an unincorporated area between Los Angeles and Carson found the boy with a wound to the head.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Family members in the apartment at the time of the shooting just after midnight told authorities they did not realize there was a gun nearby. Authorities say they do not expect charges.

Judge to Decide if Girls Will Be Tried in Stabbing Plot

judgeshipMADISON, Wis. (AP) — A southeastern Wisconsin judge will decide whether there’s enough evidence to send to trial two girls accused of nearly killing a classmate to please a fantasy character called Slender Man.

A preliminary hearing for the two girls got underway Monday in a packed courtroom in Waukesha County. Prosecutors charged the girls as adults with first-degree attempted homicide in the attack at a park in Waukesha last May. The defendants and victim were all 12 at the time of the attack.

Authorities say Payton Leutner was stabbed 19 times, but managed to crawl out of the woods where she was attacked to a path where a bicyclist found her.

The Associated Press isn’t naming the defendants because their attorneys say they may try to move their cases into juvenile court.

Schools Start Treating E-Cigarettes as Drug Paraphernalia

ecigaretteRICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Some schools are getting tougher on e-cigarettes, even punishing possession of the devices more harshly than regular cigarettes.

The devices, which heat a nicotine solution to create a vapor instead of burning tobacco, have passed traditional smokes in popularity among teenagers. Schools are clamping down because e-cigarettes, sometimes also known as vaporizers, can also be used for illegal substances like marijuana.

Most schools have folded e-cigarettes into their anti-tobacco policies, which typically punish students with detention, a letter home and sometimes a tobacco education class.

But other schools in states including North Carolina, New Jersey, Washington and Connecticut, are grouping the devices in with bongs and pipes, meaning students could face long suspensions and required drug tests and have possession of drug paraphernalia marked on their school record.

In Close Vote, Utah House OKs Firing Squad Proposal

state-of-utah-sealSALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A controversial proposal that resurrects Utah’s use of firing squads to carry out executions has advanced in the state legislature by a handful of votes.

Utah’s House of Representatives initially voted 35-35 on the proposal Friday morning, but after three missing lawmakers were summoned the floor and one lawmaker switched, the measure passed 39-34.

It now faces an unclear fate in Utah’s GOP-controlled Senate, where leaders have declined to say if they’d support it.

Republican Gov. Gary Herbert has not revealed if he will sign the bill.

The bill from Republican Rep. Paul Ray would call for a firing squad if Utah cannot get lethal injection drugs 30 days before an execution.

Critics say the firing squad is a gruesome relic of Utah’s Wild West past and would bring international condemnation upon the state.

Juveniles Accused of Running Child Porn Instagram Account

police-lights-redPEMBROKE PINES, Fla. (AP) — Police are urging parents in South Florida to check the online accounts of their children after three teens were accused of creating an Instagram account to solicit and post explicit photos of other minors.

Pembroke Pines police arrested two boys, ages 12 and 15, and a 13-year-old girl Thursday. They face charges of electronic transmission of child pornography.

The arrests followed a 10-week investigation.

Police say the social media account encouraged its 500 followers to post nude and sexually explicit photos of minors to “expose” them. The posts included their names and personal information.

Sgt. Drew Jacobs said numerous youths were exploited. He said detectives are likely to release more information on Friday.

Pembroke Pines is a suburb of Fort Lauderdale.

Groups Say ‘Fifty Shades’ Endorses Sexual Violence

fifty-shades-of-greyBUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — It hasn’t even opened but already “Fifty Shades of Grey” is getting a big thumbs-down from religious and other groups who say it’s degrading to women and endorses sexual violence.

One social media campaign is encouraging movie-goers to instead give their ticket and popcorn money to women’s shelters.

Even as screenings sell out in advance, critics, including the American Family Association and National Center on Sexual Exploitation, are pushing for boycotts.

One group in Madison, Wisconsin, is planning to picket outside a Thursday premier.

Author E L James, who wrote the erotic trilogy that launched the film, has heard the backlash and says the critics have it all wrong. She says no woman wants to read about abuse, and that everything that happens is safe and consensual.

Now Someone Can Mange Your Facebook Account After You Die

facebook-logoNEW YORK (AP) — Facebook is giving more options to decide what happens to users’ accounts after they die.

The world’s biggest online social network said Thursday it will now let users pick someone who can manage their account after they pass away. Previously, the accounts were “memorialized” after death, or locked so that no one could log in.

Beginning in the U.S., Facebook says users can choose a “legacy contact” to post on their page after they die, respond to new friend requests and update their profile picture and cover photo. Users can also have their accounts deleted instead.

Facebook also ensures that the account of a user who died doesn’t show up as a “suggested friend” or in other ways that could upset the person’s loved ones.
