Suge Knight’s Bail Revoked After Police Cite Flight Risk

jailLOS ANGELES (AP) — Former rap music mogul Marion “Suge” Knight, founder of one of the genre’s leading labels, had his $2 million bail revoked in Los Angeles after his arrest in running down and killing a man.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokeswoman Nicole Nishida says detectives asked a bail commissioner Monday to keep the Death Row Records founder behind bars because he is a possible flight risk. Authorities also cited Knight’s history of violent crimes and the possibility he would intimidate witnesses.

Police allege Knight, who started the music label that helped solidify West Coast rap, killed a man and injured another by hitting them with his pickup truck Thursday.

Attorney James Blatt says Knight accidentally ran over the men as he tried to escape a vicious attack.

Michigan Fighting Claims of Sexual Abuse by Teens in Prison

jailANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan’s prison system is defending against a major lawsuit that claims guards and other employees failed to prevent the sexual assault of male inmates under 18 who were housed with adults.

After more than a year of litigation, the young inmates have made some important victories. Washtenaw County Judge Carol Kuhnke has agreed to make the case a class-action and also declared that state civil rights protections apply.

The lawsuit says teens were forced to engage in sex acts with adult prisoners and staff. The attorney general’s office says it doesn’t believe there was “rampant” abuse as alleged.

Males under 18 now are housed away from adults. In 2009, the state agreed to a $100 million settlement with female prisoners who said they were assaulted by male staff.

After Being Hit by Car, Tampa Cat Crawls Back from Grave

odd-newsTAMPA, Fla. (AP) — If cats have nine lives, Bart the black and white feline from Tampa, Florida, has certainly used up one.

When 1 ½-year-old Bart was hit by a car earlier this month, owner Ellis Hutson was so distraught he couldn’t stand the thought of burying the cat. So he asked neighbor Dusty Albritton to dig a shallow grave.

But five days later, on Jan. 21, a matted and injured Bart emerged, meowing for food.

Hutson got in touch with the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, which through the Save-A-Pet Medical Fund will help cover costs of surgery to remove an eye, wire his jaw shut and insert a feeding tube.

Bart should recover in about six weeks and he’ll go home with Hutson.
