TSA Finding More Guns in Airport Carry-On Bags

TSABIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The government says it is finding more guns in carry-on bags at U.S. airports.

The Transportation Security Administration says officers discovered 2,212 weapons during safety screenings last year. That is 22 percent more than 2013.

The numbers are relatively small considering about 2 million people go through screenings daily. But TSA spokesman Mark Howell says the increase of 22 percent is still startling. Firearms were found at a total of 224 U.S. airports, or 19 more than the year before.

Howell says more people seem to be bringing weapons into airports in carry-on bags, most often by accident. He says the increase could be linked to more people with weapons permits and varying state laws on firearms.

Firearms can be sent through security in checked bags if they’re unloaded and stored properly.

Toddler Left in Day Car Van Found Wandering on NY Street

police-lights-redROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 3-year-old boy left alone in a day care van has been found wandering on a New York street.

Police tell local media in Rochester that the boy was picked up around 8 a.m. Monday and fell asleep in a back seat of the van. Two workers unloaded the other children but apparently forgot about the toddler.

The workers then drove away with the boy still strapped into his seat and parked the van.

Police say the boy awoke and got out of the van. A motorist spotted him at around 11 a.m., pulled over and called 911.

The boy was treated at a hospital and released.

The two workers have been charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Woman, 24, Held in Death of Baby Found at Recycling Center

Jail-Bars-and-Cuffs_mediumROSEVILLE, Mich. (AP) — Police say they’ve arrested a 24-year-old woman in the death of her newborn baby boy whose body was found in a suburban Detroit recycling center.

Roseville police Chief James P. Berlin announced the arrest Monday. He tells reporters that the woman had been pregnant and acquaintances were suspicious about her explanation for the absence of a baby.

Macomb County morgue employees have named the child Henry Alexander Macomb, after Macomb County’s namesake, Gen. Alexander Macomb. Business and community members are contributing a casket, headstone and cemetery plot.

Burial is planned at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township.

Berlin told MLive.com earlier Monday that detectives were headed to St. Clair County to talk to “specific people.”

Investigators say the baby found Jan. 14 in Roseville was 1 to 3 days old.

Police: Boy Fatally Shot Playing Cops and Robbers

ambulance-lightsEAGAN, Minn. (AP) — Police in Minnesota say a 15-year-old boy unintentionally fatally shot his 13-year-old brother while playing “cops and robbers.”

Police and paramedics responded to an Eagan home Sunday morning after the 15-year-old reported his brother was unresponsive and bleeding.

The 15-year-old told dispatchers his brother had fallen and stabbed himself while running with a knife. But when police arrived, the older boy told officers he had accidentally shot his brother.

The boys were home alone with their 11-year-old sister when they found an unloaded 9 mm pistol belonging to their father. Investigators say at some point, the firearm was loaded, then thought to be unloaded while the boys chased each other.

Police say the 15-year-old fired one round that struck his brother in the chest.

No one was arrested.

Suspected Burglar Falls Through Ceiling, Lands Near Police

houston-policeHOUSTON (AP) — Authorities say a man’s plans to break into a Houston store fell through, after he crashed through the ceiling and landed in front of police.

Houston police say the man climbed a tree and onto the roof of a Family Dollar store early Sunday morning, then managed to break a hole in the roof and enter the building.

But after making his way into the store, the man fell through the ceiling just as a police officer arrived in response to a call about a potential burglary.

The officer ordered the unidentified man to stay on the floor. The man was later arrested.

Authorities believe the man was trying to steal cigarettes.

National NAACP Leader Urges Pursuit of Justice

NAACPCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — The national leader of the NAACP says people should not be deterred from pursuing justice while possible hate crimes are being investigated, including an attempted bombing in Colorado Springs near the headquarters of the NAACP.

Cornell William Brooks told hundreds of people in Colorado Springs on Saturday that they should continue to fight bigotry, voter disenfranchisement, income inequality and unfairness in the criminal injustice system.

Brooks is visiting Colorado Springs in response to the Jan. 6 attempted bombing of a building that houses the organization’s offices and Mr. G’s Hair Design Studios.

No one was injured in the explosion that occurred next to the wall of the barbershop. So far, no arrests have been made and the case is still under investigation.

Deputies: Florida Toddler Fatally Shoots Self with Dad’s Gun

ambulance-lightsTARPON SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) — Officials say a Tampa Bay area toddler is dead after finding his father’s .380-caliber handgun in the family’s car and shooting himself.

Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies say Kaleb Ahles was in the car Wednesday afternoon while 23-year-old parents Kevin Ahles and Christina Nigro loaded boxes as they prepared to move. Somehow, the boy opened the glove compartment, where Ahles stored the gun.

The parents told deputies they heard a loud pop and ran to the car. The mother performed CPR and the boy was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Sheriff Bob Gualtieri says the parents won’t face criminal charges because no one could punish them more than they’ll punish themselves. He called the incident a “tragic situation” where “everything happens the wrong way.”

Cops: Twins, 9, Left Mostly Alone for Months, Parents Abroad

police-lights-redMANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Police in New Hampshire say 9-year-old twins were left mostly on their own for four months while their parents went to Nigeria.

Manchester police say the parents had asked an uncle to care for the boys, and he would stop by every couple of days to drop off food. But police say when they intervened in November, they found no edible food in the refrigerator and only ramen noodles in a cabinet.

The uncle, Giobari Atura (jee-oh-BAHR’-ee ah-TOO’-ruh), was charged with neglect.

The boys’ parents went overseas in July. They were due to return in August but said illness and passport problems delayed them.

The boys are in foster care.

Atura is free on $500 bail. His phone number isn’t listed. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had a lawyer.

Obama Visits GOP Strongholds Idaho, Kansas

obama-fundraiserLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — President Barack Obama likes to say there are no red states or blue states, just the United States of America. Yet his first two stops on the traditional post-State of the Union tour were in Republican “red” states.

The White House says this is not a coincidence.

Spokesman Josh Earnest says Idaho, where Obama stopped Wednesday, is a good example of a state that’s investing in programs to help people get the skills and training they need to get a good middle-class job.

Obama has emphasized skilled training throughout his presidency.

Earnest notes that the political leadership in Idaho and in Kansas, Obama’s stop on Thursday, is Republican.

He says Obama wanted to visit both states to show that Republican support exists for the types of programs the president supports.

People Not Vaccinated for Measles Urged to Avoid Disneyland

disneylandLOS ANGELES (AP) — California public health officials say unvaccinated people and children too young to be immunized against measles should avoid Disneyland after new infections were linked to the theme park.

The cases are the latest in an outbreak that began in late December that has sickened 59 people in the state.

Eight others in four U.S. states and Mexico have also fallen ill after visiting Disney parks.

The new advice came after health officials reported new cases linked to Disney in January. A total of 42 cases have been traced to the parks in Orange County.

Most of those affected had not been vaccinated against measles, a highly contagious illness that can be easily spread through the air.

Though the virus has been eradicated in the U.S. since 2000, it can still enter the country through an infected traveler.
