Police: Man Left 3 Kids in Freezing Car While He Was in Court

police-lights-redNEWTON, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man is facing child endangerment charges after police say he left his three children — ages 5, 3 and 9 months — inside a car for about an hour in freezing temperatures while he was in court.

Newton police Lt. Bruce Apotheker says a passer-by notified police about the children after spotting them Tuesday afternoon inside a car in a municipal lot near Newton District Court.

Police say it was 23 degrees outside and the unlocked car was not running. The children were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The 38-year-old Framingham man, whose name was not made public, told authorities he was only inside the courthouse for 12 minutes. Police estimate he was inside for an hour.

He’ll be summoned to court.

Ohio Man Accused of Plotting Attack Against US Capitol

FBIWASHINGTON (AP) — Federal prosecutors say an Ohio man has been arrested in a plot to attack the U.S. Capitol and kill government officials inside the building.

A criminal complaint charges 20-year-old Christopher Lee Cornell, of Green Township, with attempting to kill officers and employees of the United States.

Cornell, also known as Raheel Mahrus Ubaydah, was arrested Wednesday as he took control of a firearm during an undercover FBI operation.

It wasn’t immediately clear if he had a lawyer. The FBI says the public was never in danger and he never made it to Washington.

The complaint alleges that an FBI informant began supplying agents with information about Cornell last year.

Prosecutors say he professed allegiance online to the Islamic State and spoke of plans to commit acts of jihad.

Military Suicides Up Slightly in 2014

soldierWASHINGTON (AP) — New Defense Department figures show that suicides among active-duty military personnel rose slightly in 2014, led by increases in the number of sailors and airmen who took their own lives.

There were fewer suicides last year by Army soldiers and Marines, the two services that have seen the most combat in Iraq and Afghanistan over the last decade.

According to preliminary Pentagon data, there were 288 confirmed and suspected suicides by active-duty personnel in 2014, compared with 286 in 2013. Both totals, however, represent a sharp drop from the 2012 number of 352. The data was obtained by The Associated Press.

Over time the numbers may change, particularly if deaths that were initially believed to be suicides are fully investigated and found to be otherwise.

Terminally Ill Eminem Fan Dies Day After Rapper’s Visit

rainbow-connectionROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (AP) — A terminally ill Detroit-area teenager who was surprised by a visit from rapper Eminem has died.

Rainbow Connection Executive Director Mary Grace McCarter said Tuesday that the parents of 17-year-old Gage Garmo told her that he died Monday in their Rochester Hills home.

Gage had a wish fulfilled when Detroit native Eminem stopped by Sunday evening. The Detroit Free Press says the pair sat in the family’s living room talking about hip-hop and football.

Gage was diagnosed with bone cancer three years ago, when he was a freshman at Rochester High School.

Friends and classmates used social media to spread Gage’s wish to meet Eminem, his musical hero, after he learned last week that he had just days left to live.

Michigan-based charity Rainbow Connection set up the meeting.

Arkansas, North Dakota Abortion Limits Head to Appeals Court

ne-supreme-court-gavelST. LOUIS (AP) — North Dakota and Arkansas are asking a federal appeals court in St. Louis to reinstate two of the nation’s most stringent abortion bans.

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is hearing oral arguments in the two cases Tuesday morning. The states are seeking to reinstate abortion restrictions approved by lawmakers in 2013 but overturned by lower federal courts in separate decisions.

The North Dakota law banned abortions when a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which can be as early as six weeks into pregnancy and before many women know they’re pregnant. A U.S. District Court judge in Bismarck ruled the law unconstitutional in April 2014.

The Arkansas law banned abortions after 12 weeks. State lawmakers in the Republican-controlled Legislature overrode Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe’s veto.

Facebook Launches Amber Alerts to Help Find Missing Children

amber-alertNEW YORK (AP) — Facebook users in the U.S. will soon receive Amber Alerts to help find missing children who may be located near them.

Facebook Inc. is working with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to send the alerts to users’ mobile phones if they are in a search area where a child has been abducted. Facebook says people are already using its site to encourage their friends and family to help find missing children, and that several children have been reunited with their families as a result of information shared on the site.

Last March, a missing 11-year-old girl was found in a South Carolina motel room when a motel clerk called police after seeing an Amber Alert on Facebook, according to the company and reports at the time.

Cops: Teen Charged in Teacher Killing Had Bloody Box Cutter

crimeSALEM, Mass. (AP) — Two police officers say a Massachusetts teen charged with raping and killing his high school math teacher had a bloody box cutter and women’s underwear in his backpack when they detained him.

Topsfield Officers Neal Hovey and Joseph DeBernardo said in court Friday that they found Philip Chism, now 15, on a poorly lit stretch of a roadway carrying Colleen Ritzer’s ID and credit cards.

After bringing Chism back to the police station, Hovey said they found the box cutter and panties in his backpack.

The officers were testifying at a hearing where a judge is considering a request by Chism’s lawyers to have his police confession suppressed.

Chism has been charged as an adult with murder and aggravated rape in the October 2013 slaying of Ritzer, a popular 24-year-old teacher at Danvers High School. He has pleaded not guilty.
