Cops: Dad Cut Dreadlocks Off Teen Daughter’s Male Friend

odd-newsREADING, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania father is apologizing after police say he pulled his daughter’s male friend by the hair and chopped off his dreadlocks with a knife.

Reginald Hardy was charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats and other offenses after police say he saw the 19-year-old sneaking around his apartment Friday with his 17-year-old daughter.

Police say the 38-year-old Hardy punched the 19-year-old in the face and threatened to shoot him in the back if he ran away as he left.

Hardy said he was only looking out for his daughter. He says her friend was disrespectful to him and shouldn’t have been at the apartment.

Police say Hardy cooperated with the investigation. He’s free on $50,000 unsecured bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 12.

CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — Police say a South Carolina man charged with sexual assault of his nephew’s girlfriend was beaten by the relative, who won’t be charged in the incident.

Fifty-two-year-old William Mattson of Conway is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Local media outlets report that a judge denied him bond Saturday.

Mattson was arrested New Year’s Day. Authorities say Mattson’s nephew told them he came home and found his girlfriend and uncle in bed together. The nephew said the woman was naked, and Mattson was clothed.

The man said he beat Mattson until he was out of the house. Authorities say the nephew won’t be charged because he was defending the woman.

Mattson was jailed Monday. It wasn’t known whether he had an attorney. Authorities say he’s scheduled for a March 20 court appearance.

Official: 2 Hurts When Tornado Hits Rural Georgia

severe-weatherALMA, Ga. (AP) — An assistant fire chief in rural Georgia says a tornado swept through the area and destroyed a mobile home, injuring two people inside.

Boatright says the tornado knocked down trees, destroyed two barns and caused minor damage to a couple of houses.

Report: Meth Seizures at US-Mexico Border Soar in 2014

METHSAN DIEGO (AP) — Seizures of methamphetamine soared at the US-Mexico border during fiscal year 2014.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Sunday (http://bit.ly/1BxwFy2) that meth seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s San Diego field office accounted for 63 percent of all meth seized at land, air and sea entry points nationwide.

Almost all meth used to be produced in the United States and San Diego was a production hub.

But the U.S. cracked down with laws limiting access to the synthetic ingredients, and now it’s cheaper and easier to make it in Mexico.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration estimates that 90 percent of meth in United States now comes from Mexico.

Drug cartels find it cheaper to make meth than smuggle cocaine from South America.

The 2014 fiscal year ended Sept. 30.

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg Starts Reading Program

The Facebook founder and CEO announced on his page recently that he has vowed to read a book every other week in 2015, with an emphasis on learning about different beliefs and cultures.

Zuckerberg created a “Year in Book” page and urged his friends to join him in the project. As of Sunday afternoon, it had more than 89,000 likes.

The first book in his program, Moises Naim’s “The End of Power,” was out of stock Sunday on Amazon.com and had a sales ranking of No. 203. The book was first published in 2013.

Oprah Winfrey remains the gold standard for choosing books, though clubs have been started by “Good Morning America” and the “Today” show, among others.

Concerns Rise Over US Anti-Prison Rape Law’s Fate

jailWhen Congress passed a law in 2003 aimed at ending sexual assault in U.S. prisons, jails and juvenile detention centers, survivors were hopeful that it would help solve the long-ignored problem.

Now, some of the inmate advocacy groups and rape survivors worry that a proposal to reduce the law’s financial penalties will severely damage it. Its sponsor, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, vows to re-introduce it in the new GOP-controlled Congress.

He said the funds include grants for worthy programs, such as ones that support rape and domestic violence victims outside of prison. He says the law should be more narrowly tailored to affect money for prison construction, operations and administration.

Advocates say the measure is the latest sign that the law’s implementation is too slow.

Authorities took both men into custody and say two recently deceased bodies were inside the truck.

The officers and suspect were hospitalized with injuries that weren’t life-threatening.

Illinois Extends Marijuana Experiment to Children

Medical-ChartCHICAGO (AP) — A new law expanding the Illinois medical marijuana program to children is opening a market for an unproven strain of cannabis called Charlotte’s Web and a dark green, weed-fragrant oil made from it.

Some parents of children with epilepsy say the oil eases their children’s seizures. The marijuana strain is cultivated by a Colorado company to be heavy in a compound called CBD and low in THC, the psychoactive ingredient that makes people high.

Charlotte’s Web hasn’t been tested in clinical trials for effectiveness or safety, but it will be legal in Illinois under a law that took effect Thursday.

For now, mainstream medicine regards Charlotte’s Web as a folk remedy deserving of caution, and it’s unclear whether Illinois doctors will sign off on their young patients using it.

Pinellas County jail records did not show whether Gomez had an attorney.
