crime-scene-police-shootCROWLEY, Texas (AP) — Police in North Texas say a man fatally shot his girlfriend and killed two of her teenage daughters before turning the gun on himself.

Crowley Police Chief Luis Soler said Tuesday that investigators are still working to determine what led 36-year-old Samuel Morales to target the three at the home they shared south of Fort Worth.

Soler says 34-year-old Xiomara Leon was shot multiple times Sunday, as was her daughter, 18-year-old Linda Gonzalez. Thirteen-year-old Yasmine Zavala was strangled.

The bodies were found by officers responding to a report of a suicide attempt at the home.

Soler says another of Leon’s children, a 9-year-old boy, witnessed part of the attack and called a relative, who then called 911. The boy was not physically harmed.

Chrysler Recalls 67,000 Pickup Trucks

ChryslerNEW YORK (AP) — Fiat Chrysler is recalling about 67,000 model year 2006 and 2007 pickups because of a problem that could prevent the cars from starting, or cause them to move when the ignition key is turned.

The company says a wire in the clutch ignition interlock switch could break. That could keep the truck from starting, or if drivers don’t follow recommended starting procedures, the truck could move when the ignition key is turned. Chrysler says one death is associated with the problem.

The company is recalling Dodge Dakota, Dodge Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 and Mitsubishi Raider pickups that were made between July 2005 and June 2006. Nearly 55,000 of them are in the U.S.

FCA US LLC, the former Chrysler Group LLC, will replace the switches at no cost to consumers.

Expert: 12-Year-Old Boy Can Stand Trial for Murder

gavel-and-scaleGRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — A psychologist says a 12-year-old boy is competent to face trial in the fatal stabbing of a 9-year-old boy at a playground in western Michigan.

Defense attorney Charles Boekeloo will have two weeks to decide whether to seek another opinion.

The boy is charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of 9-year-old Michael Verkerke at a playground in Kentwood near Grand Rapids in August. The boy replied, “Yes, sir,” when a Kent County judge asked him if he understood what was happening in court Tuesday.

He’s designated as an adult in the juvenile court system, meaning he would be sentenced as a juvenile if convicted of murder, then resentenced as an adult at age 21.

The boy’s siblings have been removed from their home following allegations of abuse by their mother. The Department of Human Services was aware of the abuse allegations long before the fatal stabbing but didn’t remove the 12-year-old or his siblings from the home.

The Associated Press isn’t naming the 12-year-old boy because of his age.
