PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A 29-year-old woman with brain cancer is using her last days to push for expanded right-to-die laws.

Brittany Maynard has moved from California to Portland, Oregon, to take advantage of the state’s Death with Dignity Act. Oregon is one of a handful of states in which terminally ill patients can end their lives with prescriptions of lethal medication.

Maynard says she’s not suicidal, but wants to die on her own terms. She plans to take the lethal dose Nov. 1.

More than 750 people in Oregon have died using the law since 1998. The state does not track how many of them are like Maynard and moved from another state.

Maynard said she learned she had cancer on New Year’s Day and was later given six months to live.

1st Ebola Patient Diagnosed in the US Dead

Thomas-Eric-DuncanDALLAS (AP) — A Dallas hospital spokesman says the first Ebola patient diagnosed in the United States has died.

Wendell Watson of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital says Thomas Eric Duncan died Wednesday morning.

Duncan arrived in Dallas Sept. 20 from Liberia and fell ill a few days later. He was sent home after an initial visit to the emergency room, but taken back to the hospital Sept. 28 and has been kept in isolation ever since.

Others in Dallas could be in danger as officials try to contain the virus that has ravaged West Africa, killing thousands of people. Officials say 10 people had direct contact with Duncan while he was contagious.

Vermont Mom, Boyfriend Held in Boy’s Alcohol Death

police-lights-redHARDWICK, Vt. (AP) — Vermont State Police say a woman and her boyfriend put alcohol in her disabled 13-year-old son’s IV tube, killing him.

Melissa Robitille and Walter Richter III were charged Tuesday with murder in the death of Isaac Robitille. Melissa Robitille called police on Aug. 22 to report he was dead.

Police say Isaac was born with significant medical conditions and multiple disabilities that required the assistance of caretakers, feeding tubes and IV tubes.

They say Robitille and Richter used the IV tube to administer alcohol to the boy and that led to his death. His blood alcohol content was 0.146 percent, almost twice the legal limit for driving.

Robitille and Richter are charged with second-degree murder. They’re in police custody. It couldn’t immediately be learned if they had lawyers.

DALLAS (AP) — The family of a man diagnosed with the first U.S. case of Ebola has again visited him at the hospital but is declining to view him again via video because his condition is too “disturbing.”

Thomas Eric Duncan’s relatives had previously watched him using a video system inside the Dallas hospital where he is being treated. Duncan is sedated.

But when they returned Tuesday with Rev. Jessie Jackson, they decided that enduring such images again would be too painful. Duncan’s nephew Josephus Weeks says, “It didn’t look good.”

Weeks says he and Duncan’s mother were unable to sleep after seeing Duncan’s face over video.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital says Duncan remains in critical condition though he is stable. He is on a breathing machine and receiving kidney dialysis.

Labradoodle Survives Fall Off 200-Foot Cliff

oregon-humane-societyBONNEVILLE, Ore. (AP) — A Labradoodle named Gracie fell 200 feet off a cliff in Oregon — and survived.

Dog owner Michelle Simmons says Gracie and another dog were playing on a trail in the Columbia River Gorge. Gracie went over the side of the cliff.

Simmons says they heard the dog rolling, heard her hit the ground and yelp — then nothing. They thought she was dead and began an impromptu memorial service. That’s when another hiker came rushing up, saying the dog was alive.

The Oregon Humane Society’s volunteer technical rescue team responded. One member was lowered down to Gracie and fitted her with a harness early Monday and brought her to safety.

The dog suffered only scratches and bruises in her fall off the steep trail.

Burglar Caught in the Act Offers to Share Heroin

odd-newsBILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Prosecutors in Montana say a man caught leaving a house he had apparently burglarized apologized to the homeowner and offered him some heroin.

Christopher Dayell Bittner made an initial court appearance Monday on felony burglary and drug possession charges.

Authorities say the homeowner and his 7-year-old son came home as Bittner was leaving Saturday. Yellowstone County Attorney Paul Adam says Bittner apologized and offered the drug. He was found nearby, and court records say a search of his backpack turned up 31.5 grams of heroin, drug paraphernalia and items belonging to the homeowner.

Public defender Roberta Drew asked that Bittner be released without bail because he wanted to attend his father’s funeral. Bail was set at $7,500, but Bittner was allowed to attend the service.

Drugmaker Provides Experimental Drug for Ebola

fdaWASHINGTON (AP) — A North Carolina drugmaker says it is providing an experimental antiviral drug for patients with Ebola, an emergency step authorized by the Food and Drug Administration.

Chimerix Inc. says physicians sought federal permission to use company’s drug, called brincidofovir, which is in late-stage testing for other types of viruses. The company did not identify the physicians making the request.

Last Tuesday doctors in Dallas diagnosed the first U.S. case of Ebola in a man who recently arrived from Liberia.

Brincidofovir is an oral antiviral drug being tested to fight more common viruses, including one that infects patients undergoing bone marrow transplants. Laboratory tests suggested it might also fight Ebola.

Two other experimental drugs developed specifically for Ebola have been used in American patients. None have been approved by the FDA.

Boy Left in Car During Church Choir Practice Dies

police-lights-redPHOENIX (AP) — Phoenix police say a 3-year-old boy has died a day after being left in a hot car for several hours while his mother and a family friend were in church for a choir practice.

Officer James Holmes says the family friend had taken the boy and other children to a church where the friend and the child’s mother had choir practice late Saturday morning. The mother had arrived earlier.

Haden Nelson was not discovered missing for three hours, following the end of choir practice at 2 p.m. By then, temperatures had reached the high 90s, and Holmes said the child wasn’t breathing when he was found in the vehicle.

The boy was hospitalized in extremely critical condition but died Sunday afternoon.

The case will be referred to prosecutors to decide whether to press charges.
