Sentencing Set for Mom Who Tried to Kill Autistic Girl

ne-supreme-court-gavelBEULAH, Mich. (AP) — A northern Michigan woman who acknowledged trying to kill herself and her autistic 14-year-old daughter is scheduled for sentencing and could get up to life in prison.

Kelli Stapleton pleaded guilty last month to first-degree child abuse after originally being charged with attempted murder. A two-day sentencing hearing begins Monday in Benzie County Circuit Court.

The 46-year-old defendant drove her daughter Isabelle to an isolated location in September 2013, gave her sleep-inducing medication and ignited charcoal in two grills inside a van. She and Isabelle survived, but her daughter sustained brain damage. Authorities say she has since recovered.

Kelli Stapleton was an advocate for autism awareness and kept a blog that described the challenges of finding and affording proper treatment for Isabelle, who was prone to violent outbursts.

Feds Probe Power Steering in Ford Midsize Cars

fordDETROIT (AP) — U.S. safety regulators are investigating complaints of power-assisted steering failure in three Ford Motor Co. midsize car models.

The probe covers 938,000 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ cars from the 2010 through 2012 model years, as well as the 2011 Mercury Milan.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it found 508 complaints alleging that the cars lost power-assisted steering, causing increased steering effort.

Four complaints say the problem caused crashes.

The agency says in documents posted Monday on its website that in many cases, a warning message appeared as the failure happened. Restarting the car corrected the problem in some cases, but the problem returned in others.

The agency says it will check the scope and frequency of a problem. It could seek a recall.

Ford says it’s cooperating.

Official: Enterovirus 68 Caused Boy’s Death

Medical-ChartTRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey medical examiner says a virus that has been causing severe respiratory illness across the country is responsible for the death of a 4-year-old boy.

Hamilton Township health officer Jeff Plunkett says the medical examiner determined the death of Eli Waller was the result of enterovirus 68.

The virus has sickened more than 500 people in 43 states and Washington, D.C. — almost all of them children. Earlier this week, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said four people infected with the virus had died but what role it played in the deaths was unclear.

Some children are especially vulnerable to infection because of pre-existing conditions, though the medical examiner said that was not the case in the New Jersey death.

Township officials say the boy’s parents have asked for privacy.

GM Recalls Some Cadillac, Pontiac Sedans

general-motorsDETROIT (AP) — General Motors is recalling more than 60,000 vehicles in North America, the latest round of recalls this year for the automaker.

The biggest recall outlined by GM on Saturday affects 46,873 vehicles.

The recalls are Pontiac G8s from the 2008 through the 2009 model years and 2011-2013 model Chevrolet Caprice PPV left-hand-drive sedans imported from Australia.

GM says the ignition switch key may shift from the “run” position when touched by the driver’s knee.

The company is aware of one crash related to the problem, but no injuries.

Another recall covers over 10,005 Cadillac CTS-V sedans from the 2004-2007 model years and 2006-2007 model Cadillac STS-Vs.

On some vehicles, the fuel pump module electrical terminal may overheat.

GM says it knows of no crashes or injuries related to the problem.

DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas hospital treating the lone U.S. Ebola patient says an emergency room doctor who initially treated and released him did have access to the man’s travel history, after all.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas issued a news release late Friday saying Thomas Duncan’s travel history was available to all of the hospital workers who treated him during his initial visit, including the doctor.

It said Thursday that a flaw in the electronic health records systems led to separate physician and nursing workflows, meaning Duncan’s travel history didn’t appear in the doctor’s.

Duncan fell ill after traveling from Liberia to Dallas and was sent home after that initial emergency room visit. He returned two days later and was diagnosed with Ebola.

Hospital spokesman Wendell Watson had no more details Saturday.

2 Teachers Accused of Having Threesome with Student

GRETNA, La. (AP) — Two teachers are accused of having group sex with a student in Louisiana after school officials told authorities the 16-year-old was bragging to his peers.

Police say 32-year-old Shelley Dufresne (doo-FRAYN) and 24-year-old Rachel Respess had sex with the teenager at Respess’ apartment in Kenner, outside New Orleans. They teach at nearby Destrehan High School.

Each has posted bond and left jail as of Thursday.

Dufresne also is accused of having sex with the teenager at her home in Montz.

Both women face charges of carnal knowledge of a juvenile, indecent behavior with a juvenile and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.

Authorities say they were tipped last week when school officials told them one student was bragging to others about a sexual relationship with teachers.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush wants to be president.

That’s according to his brother, former President George W. Bush, who notes that Jeb hasn’t made any final decisions about the 2016 presidential contest.

George W. Bush told Fox News on Thursday that the pair recently spoke about Jeb’s political future at an event honoring veterans. The elder Bush says he’s encouraging his brother to run. George W. Bush says “he thinks” his brother wants to.

He says Jeb would “make a great president” in part because he watched his father and brother serve in the White House.

George W. Bush says that Jeb is “a very thoughtful man” who’s weighing his options.

Jeb Bush would be an early front-runner should he enter the race for the next Republican presidential nomination.

California Teens Arrested in 920 Chicken Deaths

odd-newsFRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Deputies in central California have arrested four people — one adult and three juveniles — who are suspected of breaking into a Foster Farms chicken ranch and killing more than 900 birds with a golf club.

Fresno County sheriff’s officials acting on several tips Wednesday tracked down 18-year-old Gabriel Quintero of Riverdale. Also taken into custody were two juvenile males, ages 15 and 17, from Caruthers, and a third juvenile male, age 17, from Lemoore. All have been booked on charges of burglary and felony cruelty to animals.

It wasn’t immediately known if the suspects have attorneys.

Investigators say the suspects pulled back a fence Sept. 20 to gain access to a shed south of Fresno and massacred 920 chickens with a golf club and possibly another blunt instrument.

Mom Accused of Helping Son in Drive-By Shooting

crime-scene-police-shootSALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah woman is accused of driving her teenage son by a convenience store to shoot at rival gang members he had been fighting with at school.

Prosecutors say Lisa Egersdorf picked up her 17-year-old son from his Salt Lake City school and was behind the wheel when he fired several shots at the group.

Charging documents show she asked, “Did you get them?” after he fired at their car. No one was hurt in the Sept. 22 drive-by shooting.

Investigators say the 36-year-old woman acknowledged she and her son are members of a gang but denied the shots came from her car.

No attorney has been listed in court records for Egersdorf or her son, and they could not be reached by the Associated Press.
