Man on Trial for Murder 20 Years After Wife Dies

ne-supreme-court-gavelSANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Twenty years after the suspicious 1994 death of his new wife, a nuclear engineer is on trial in Southern California on charges of murder and insurance fraud.

Prosecutors have said they didn’t think they had enough evidence to try Paul Curry of Orange County until a 2007 re-investigation led to a new scientific report.

During opening statements Tuesday, prosecutors told jurors that Linda Curry was poisoned with a lethal injection of nicotine. Curry’s attorney argued that Linda Curry had a history of serious gastrointestinal problems.

The prosecution says Paul Curry, who was 37 then, collected more than a half-million dollars in life insurance and other benefits. In fact, he started asking for payments the day after her funeral.

Police Say They ID’d 5 Teens in Ice Bucket Prank on Autistic Boy

police-lights-redCLEVELAND (AP) — Police near Cleveland say they have identified five teenage suspects involved in dumping bodily fluids on an autistic teen who thought he was participating in the “Ice Bucket Challenge.”

The teens are between the ages of 14 and 17. Bay Village police chief Mark Spaetzel (SPETZ’-uhl) says evidence will be presented to the Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) County prosecutor’s office early next week to determine whether delinquency charges should be filed.

The incident drew worldwide attention after the autistic teen’s mother found a video of it on his cellphone and gave media outlets permission to make it available online. Spaetzel says the prank happened at one of the suspect’s homes.

The autistic teen thought he was participating in the challenge benefiting the ALS Association and the fight against Lou Gehrig’s disease.

NYPD: Terror Threat More Complex Than Ever

NYPDNEW YORK (AP) — New York City officials say the rising power of disparate militant groups around the world presents the most complex and layered terrorism danger since the twin towers were destroyed 13 years ago.

There is no immediate threat to New York ahead of the Sept. 11 anniversary this week. But police officials say New York remains the top target and that makes it much more critical to prepare for events, including the U.S. Open tennis tournament, the United Nations General Assembly and Thursday’s commemoration.

New York Police Commissioner William Bratton said the department is prepared.

That means thousands of officers in specialized teams, bomb-sniffing dogs, undercover officers and teams of police using radioactive detection devices and other high-tech tools. Intelligence officers around the globe also will be reporting in regularly.

Marriage of Newlyweds, Ages 95 and 96, Questioned

wedding-ringsALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — A Virginia woman says she doesn’t understand the fuss over her 96-year-old mother’s recent marriage. After all, she says, anybody who wants to get married must have a little dementia.

But the courts aren’t amused by the marriage this year of 96-year-old Edith Hill and 95-year-old Eddie Harrison. And the couple’s status as newlyweds is now uncertain.

Hill was declared legally incapacitated by the courts several years ago after a doctor said she suffered from dementia. And a judge says the marriage should not have occurred without court permission. He removed Hill’s daughter, Rebecca Wright of Annandale, from her role as her mother’s guardian in large part because of the marriage.

Now a new guardian has been appointed who will decide whether the marriage will be allowed to stand.

Microsoft Revamps MSN to Flow Across Devices

microsoftNEW YORK (AP) — Microsoft is giving its MSN news service a crisper look, new lifestyle tools and seamless syncing across devices.

The company says the revamped site fits in with Microsoft’s overall strategy of making mobile phones and Internet-based services priorities. The changes also come as people increasingly read news on smartphones and tablets.

Rather than being simply an entry point for accessing the rest of the Internet, the revamped MSN is aiming to become a daily part of life for its 400 million monthly users worldwide. Besides news culled from other media outlets, MSN will have such tools as a symptom checker and a shopping list maker for recipes.

A preview of the new MSN site will be available Monday. The new site will roll out more widely later this month.
