17-Year-Old Charged with Murder in Hotel Bathroom

Jail-Bars-and-Cuffs_mediumHOUSTON (AP) — A teenager has been charged with murder in the slaying of a 35-year-old man whose beaten and stabbed body was found in a Houston motel bathtub.

Harris County jail records show 17-year-old Carlos F. Mercado was charged Wednesday in the death of Carlos Villatoro, and is being held without bond.

Jail records don’t list an attorney for Mercado.

He was arrested before dawn Tuesday for a traffic violation as he drove the victim’s car. Investigators say Mercado’s clothes were bloody and that he admitted to the killing.

A cleaner discovered Villatoro’s body in the Tropical Motel.

Houston police say Mercado and the victim checked into a room together and an argument ensued.

Authorities haven’t released a possible motive in the death.

Mother Charged with Abandoning Newborn in Trash

police-lights-redINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Authorities say an Indianapolis woman admitted giving birth in a warehouse restroom then dumping the newborn boy in a garbage can, expecting him to die.

A judge entered a preliminary not guilty plea Wednesday for 22-year-old Briana Holland on charges including attempted murder and child neglect.

Police arrested Holland after her co-workers at the Indianapolis warehouse found the newborn Friday night. Court documents say the baby’s head was covered in a bag, part of a tampon applicator was inside his mouth and toilet paper was wrapped around his neck.

A police affidavit says Holland said she was scared and couldn’t afford to care for her son. The baby is in the custody of child welfare officials.

Defense attorney Chadwick Hill didn’t return a message from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Syracuse Chief: No. 1 Party School Label Not OK

syracuseSYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — The chancellor of Syracuse University says his college’s ranking as the nation’s top party school is a “wake-up call” for change.

Kent Syverud’s (SIHV’-uh-roodz) message was posted on the university’s website Tuesday and emailed to students, staff and alumni.

He says being designated The Princeton Review’s No. 1 party school isn’t a good thing for a school to be labeled. He says Syracuse alumni, students and faculty like to have a good time, but they didn’t pour their lives into building the university “primarily to create a party.”

The chancellor says Monday’s release of The Princeton Review’s rankings serves as a wake-up call for working on two things: Enhancing awareness of Syracuse’s academic excellence and paying more attention to activities — parties included — that “get in the way of students succeeding.”

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A Maine mother busted for driving 124 mph with her two children in the car in April has been sentenced to six months in jail, and police say she’s now facing a driving under the influence charge.

Twenty-six-year-old Cheryl Gilson of Cornish was sentenced Monday in Portland District Court. She pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child and other charges.

A state trooper stopped Gilson in Portland in April after clocking her driving 124 mph on the Maine Turnpike in Saco. Authorities say her children, ages 3 and 5, were in the car, along with three young men.

Scarborough police charged Gilson with operating under the influence with a 6-year-old girl in her car three weeks ago. It’s not clear if the child is related to Gilson.

stabbingKENTWOOD, Mich. (AP) — Police say a 9-year-old boy has died after being stabbed repeatedly by another child at a playground in western Michigan.

Witnesses told police four children were playing when one of them, for an unknown reason, pulled a knife and stabbed the boy.

Montana Toddler Drowns in Mop Bucket

police-lights-redKALISPELL, Mont. (AP) — A northwestern Montana toddler drowned after tipping headfirst into a 5-gallon mop bucket.

Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry says there’s nothing to indicate the death of Marielle Dalimata of Creston was anything but an accident. The girl died Saturday night, 10 days before her first birthday.

Curry says the girl’s body was taken to the state crime lab in Missoula for an autopsy.

Brook Schwab, the girl’s aunt, tells the Daily Inter Lake (https://bit.ly/1sqdFho) that the family is devastated. She says the baby’s parents, Mark and Kayla Dalimata, wanted to remind all parents of young children how quickly a drowning can happen and to not leave children alone around water, even momentarily.

The parents and first responders tried to resuscitate Marielle. She was pronounced dead at the hospital in Kalispell.

ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) — A woman accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter at an Oregon coastal inn goes to court Monday.

On Friday, a housekeeper found Smith’s 2-year-old daughter dead in a room at a Cannon Beach resort. Authorities said Smith’s 13-year-old daughter was badly cut, but is expected to recover.

Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis (mahr-kee) says Smith’s arraignment is scheduled for Monday afternoon. He says she’ll appear by a video feed from jail and is not expected to enter a plea.

He says a defense lawyer may be appointed, and the county grand jury is expected to hear the case this week.

Man, Teen Accused of Killing Sleeping 8-Year-Old

police-lights-redDETROIT (AP) — Prosecutors have charged a man and a teenager with first-degree murder in the killing of an 8-year-old Detroit boy who was struck by a bullet as he was sleeping.

Twenty-eight-year-old Calvin Mosby and 17-year-old Devaunte Starks were arraigned Monday and jailed without bond. They also face attempted murder and firearms charges. It wasn’t immediately known if they have lawyers.

Jakari Pearson was shot about 1:20 a.m. Wednesday at the Brewster Homes public housing project north of downtown Detroit. The bullet that hit him penetrated a wall at the residence.

Michigan mandates life in prison without parole for first-degree murder. Starks is charged as an adult.

Beyonce-and-Jay-ZPASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a man was arrested at Jay-Z and Beyonce’s Rose Bowl concert in Southern California after allegedly groping a woman and then biting off the tip of her boyfriend’s finger during a fight.

Pasadena police Lt. John Luna says Alcaraz-Garnica was accused of groping a woman in her 20s. When the woman’s boyfriend confronted him, a fight broke out. Luna says during the altercation the suspect bit off the tip of one of the boyfriend’s fingers.

Alcaraz-Garnica was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. It isn’t known if he has a lawyer.

Police say 10 other people were arrested during Saturday’s concert, which drew about 55,000 fans.

A second concert was held Sunday.
