Florida Town Stunned by News of Police KKK Ties

florida-department-of-law-eFRUITLAND PARK, Fla. (AP) — Residents of a small, central Florida town say they’re shocked and disgusted by the recent disclosure that two members of its police force are accused of being members of the Ku Klux Klan.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement last week released a report saying Fruitland Park Deputy Chief David Borst and Officer George Hunnewell were Klan members. Borst denies being a member.

Borst resigned and Hunnewell was fired last week. A third Fruitland Park officer resigned in 2010 after his Klan ties became public.

A researcher with the Southern Poverty Law Center says it’s extremely rare nowadays to find police officers who are Klan members.

Cases the officers worked on also are under scrutiny. On Friday, prosecutors dismissed three cases — two traffic offenses and a misdemeanor battery.

Police: Movie, TV Legend James Garner Dies

james-garnerLOS ANGELES (AP) — Actor James Garner, wisecracking star of TV’s “Maverick” who went on to a long career on both small and big screen, has died. He was 86.

He was found dead of natural causes at his Brentwood home Saturday evening, Los Angeles police officer Alonzo Iniquez said early Sunday.

Officers responded to a call around 8 p.m. PDT and confirmed Garner’s identity from family members, Iniquez told The Associated Press.

There was no immediate word on a specific cause of death. Garner had suffered a stroke in May 2008, just weeks after his 80th birthday.

Although he was adept at drama and action, Garner was best known for his witty, low-key style, especially with the TV series “Maverick” and “The Rockford Files.”

He was nominated for an Oscar for the 1985 “Murphy’s Romance.” He remained active well into his 70s.

Police: Woman Posted Selfies in Stolen Dress

odd-newsWEST FRANKFORT, Ill. (AP) — Police investigating the theft of clothing and jewelry from a southern Illinois boutique say they arrested a woman after she posted Facebook photos of herself wearing one of the stolen items.

Police arrested 27-year-old Danielle Saxton, of West Frankfort, earlier this month on misdemeanor retail theft charges. She’s free on her own recognizance.

Authorities say a distinctive leopard-print dress was among the items stolen July 11 from Mortie’s Boutique in West Frankfort.

The store’s co-owner, Kert Williams, says he posted about the stolen items on Facebook and that people who saw Williams’ posting and those of Saxton made the connection and helped police.

Online court records don’t show whether Saxton has an attorney. She does not have a listed home telephone number.

HIV Diagnosis Rate Fell by Third in US Over Decade

american-medical-associationNEW YORK (AP) — A new study says the rate of HIV infections diagnosed in the United States each year fell by one-third over the past decade.

Experts said it’s hopeful news that the AIDS epidemic may be slowing in the U.S.

The reasons for the drop aren’t clear. It might mean fewer new infections are occurring, or most infected people already were diagnosed.

The study was released online Saturday by the Journal of the American Medical Association.

HIV is the virus that causes AIDS.

From 2002 to 2011, the study found the rate dropped from 24 to 16 out of every 100,000 people ages 13 and older.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Police say a Daytona Beach father beat an 18-year-old man unconscious after finding him sexually abusing his 11-year-old son.

Authorities say the father called 911 early Friday after he walked in on the alleged abuse. When asked by the 911 dispatcher if any weapons were involved, the father said “my foot and my fist.” The father has not been charged with any crime.

When officers arrived they found Raymond Frolander motionless on the living room floor. He had several knots on his face and was bleeding from the mouth.

The father — who was not identified by police — told investigators he walked in as Frolander was abusing the boy.

Frolander is charged with sexual battery on a child under 12.

Indictment Alleges Mail Carrier Stashed Deliveries

uspsCOLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The government says an Ohio mail carrier stashed thousands of pieces of undelivered mail at his home over 18 months.

The U.S. Postal Service began investigating last year after residents along the route in Columbus reported that DVDs had not arrived as expected.

Charles Moore has been charged with destroying or delaying mail.

Investigators found 13,000 pieces of mail on top of Moore’s freezer, in closets, in a bedroom and in the basement when they searched his home in July 2013.

Moore resigned from his job in October after being suspended. Court records don’t list an attorney. He faces five years in prison if convicted.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina sheriff says a 26-year-old man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter more than a year after he hugged a 14-month-old child so tightly that the boy stopped breathing and died.

A news release from Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell says Robert Kemp was taken into custody Tuesday and released on $10,000 bond Wednesday. Kemp is described as a family friend.

After the hug on June 27, 2013, someone in the home noticed the child was unconscious in his crib and unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate him.

The sheriff’s release didn’t say why it took a year to bring charges or give additional information on why Kemp was charged.

A spokeswoman for the sheriff did not respond to an email or phone message.

If convicted, Kemp faces up to five years in prison.

California Hiker with Broken Legs Ate Bugs to Survive

sierra-nevada-mountainsFRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A hiker who was stranded for six days with a broken leg in California’s Sierra Nevada says he survived by eating crickets and moths and melting ice for water.

Gregg Hein said Wednesday while recovering at a Fresno hospital that he was a couple days into a solo hike when a large rock crushed his right leg above the ankle. The 33-year-old Clovis man’s first thought was treating his dangling leg and protruding bone to boost his chances of making it out alive.

Hein says he used hiking gear to secure his leg and then scooted to a flat clearing with a good vantage point to wait for rescuers. A helicopter crew eventually spotted him.

Hein says his high-risk days of hiking alone are behind him.

Man Uses Blow Torch to Kill Spider, Sets House on Fire

odd-news

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle fire officials say a man trying to kill a spider caused a $60,000 fire using “a self-made blowtorch.”

Fire department spokesman Kyle Moore says the man used a can of spray paint and a lighter in an attempt to torch the spider, setting the wall and ceiling of a laundry room on fire.

The man initially tried to put water on the fire, but the blaze quickly spread into the attic.

Moore says fire “is not the method to use to kill a spider,” though he’s “pretty sure” the spider died in the blaze.

Fire crews were called to the rental home in West Seattle just before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Red Cross is providing temporary shelter for the home’s two residents, whom authorities have not identified.
