SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A prison inmate who beat a South Dakota farmer to death after meeting the man at an adult book store in Sioux City, Iowa, has died.

The Department of Corrections says 46-year-old James Strahl died Monday at a Sioux Falls hospital after an extended illness.

He was sentenced in Union County in 2010 to 25 years for first-degree manslaughter and a consecutive 10-year sentence for grand theft.

The Dakota City, Nebraska, man was initially convicted of killing William O’Hare in 1998.

Prosecutors say Strahl had sex with O’Hare at O’Hare’s farm house and beat him to death with a hammer when he refused to give Strahl a ride home.

Strahl was granted a new trial after a witness lied in an unrelated case but instead pleaded guilty.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Tracy Morgan is suing Wal-Mart over last month’s highway crash that seriously injured him and killed a fellow comedian. The lawsuit, filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in New Jersey, claims Wal-Mart was negligent when a driver of one of its tractor-trailers rammed into Morgan’s limousine bus.

The June 7 wreck on the New Jersey Turnpike killed 62-year-old comedian James McNair, who went by the name Jimmy Mack. Comedian Ardley Fuqua and Jeffrey and Krista Millea, who were passengers in the limo, are named as plaintiffs.

Morgan, the former “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” star, suffered a broken leg and broken ribs in the crash. Fuqua is recovering from crash-related injuries.

The truck driver, Kevin Roper, has pleaded not guilty to death by auto and other charges.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Officials say a tourist from the United Kingdom lost two fingertips on his right hand while riding on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in Florida.

The incident happened Thursday morning.

Bo Jones of the Reedy Creek Fire Department said the man lost the tips of his ring and pinky fingers and was taken to a hospital. His name was not released and his condition wasn’t available.

Officials say it was unclear how the incident happened.

Disney officials stopped the ride and checked it out. The ride was confirmed safe and reopened later Thursday.

MARYSVILLE, Calif. (AP) — A 911 dispatcher in California was startled when a caller turned out to be her fiancee reporting their infant son was choking.

Dispatcher Britney Melchor said she was training another dispatcher who took the call and wrote down the home address.

Melchor realized it was her own son who needed medical attention.

Melchor says she initially panicked. But then her training took hold, and she dispatched paramedics to her home.

Her 14-month-old son, Maverick, had swallowed a metal washer, starting the May 27 ordeal. The boy’s father, Robert Kimball, was able to dislodge the washer just as help arrived.

Melchor is a dispatcher in Marysville, a small city about 40 miles north of Sacramento.

IDYLLWILD, Calif. (AP) — A woman whose 2-year-old granddaughter drank methamphetamine-laced tea has pleaded guilty to child endangerment and possession of a controlled substance.

Cynthia Ann Watson entered the pleas Tuesday in a Riverside County court. She was sentenced to 60 days in custody, including 43 days in a work-release program.

She’s also ordered to stay away from her grandchildren.

Authorities say the 51-year-old resident of Aloha, Oregon, was visiting her family in Garner Valley — a community near Idyllwild — last month when she prepared the meth-laced tea to get high but left it unattended.

Her granddaughter drank some. The toddler tested positive for methamphetamine at a hospital but is expected to make a full recovery.

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City man will spend 17 years in prison for beating his nursing home roommate to death with a metal piece from a wheelchair.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown announced the sentence Wednesday for 67-year-old Thomas Yarnavick.

Yarnavick pleaded guilty to manslaughter in May.

His roommate, 71-year-old Jailall Singh, was clubbed in the head with a wheelchair footrest on Oct. 30 in Rockaway Park.

Authorities say that after the beating, Yarnavick put the bloody footrest in a laundry hamper.

NEW BRIGHTON, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania high school substitute English teacher has been charged with having sex with two 18-year-old students days before they graduated.

The attorney for 26-year-old Tiffany Leiseth, of Moon Township, didn’t immediately return a call for comment.

Eighteen-year-olds can legally consent to sex in Pennsylvania, but police say she committed a crime because the encounters with the male students occurred when Leiseth still had a teacher-student relationship with them.

New Brighton schools Superintendent Joseph Guarino contacted police after he learned of the incidents. Police determined the students had sex with Leiseth in late May, after she invited them home on separate days.

Leiseth no longer works for the district. She is charged with two felony counts of having sexual contact with a student and one count of providing alcohol to a minor.

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a 15-year-old Southern California girl was fatally injured after jumping onto the speeding car of a robber who snatched her iPhone.

Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna says Rubi Rubio briefly held onto the trunk of the car before falling off and hitting her head last Thursday in Santa Ana.

Rubio died from her injuries on Saturday while surrounded by her family at a hospital.

Investigators are asking for the public’s help in finding the robber.

Police say the man forcibly took the phone from the teen while she was walking her 7-year-old sister home from school. He ran to the car, which was driven by another person, with Rubio giving chase.

Bertagna described the vehicle as a light gray or silver Pontiac.

SEATTLE (AP) — It was little comfort to the residents of a Seattle home along Lake Washington when the naked man who crashed through their front door began loudly reciting Scripture.

Police say a woman in the home called 911 at about 2 a.m. Tuesday while her husband grabbed a baseball bat to protect his wife and two young children on the home’s upper floor.

Arriving officers spotted a naked man walking down the street, talking to himself. He took off running, they chased and caught him.

Police say after they arrested the 20-year-old man for investigation of burglary, he told them he’d taken LSD. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment, then booked into jail.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says shootings over the Fourth of July weekend that left at least nine people dead and more than 50 more injured included eight incidents that involved police.

During a news conference Monday, McCarthy said investigations were continuing but that officers who fired their weapons all appeared to be justified. The shootings included those in which two teenagers were fatally shot and another in which police shot at a man who tried to run them over with a car.

McCarthy says Chicago is still on pace to end the year with fewer homicides than last year. But he says the number of shooting incidents is up slightly over last year.
