Utah Officer Who Killed Family Used Service Weapon

Boren-FamilySALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities say a Utah police officer used his service weapon when he killed his wife, two children and his mother-in-law before turning the gun on himself in January.

Spanish Fork City Police Lt. Matt Johnson says the agency’s investigation was unable to determine Lindon police officer Joshua Boren’s exact motive. But he says investigators did learn the 34-year-old Boren and his wife were having marital problems.

Toxicology reports from the autopsy show Boren had no drugs or alcohol in his system. Johnson also says Boren had no history of violence or mental illness.

Police say the state medical examiner confirmed what investigators believed: Boren shot his wife, 32-year-old Kelly Boren; his 55-year-old mother-in-law, Marie King; and his two children, 7-year-old Joshua “Jaden” and 5-year-old Haley, before killing himself.

The shooting happened at the family’s home in Spanish Fork, about 50 miles south of Salt Lake City.

The baby was flown to the burn unit at Akron Children’s Hospital following the late Friday night accident.

The child’s grandmother, Carol McCormick, injured her fingers rescuing the baby. She tells WFMJ-TV in Youngstown the child’s entire face is burned.

A spokeswoman at Akron Children’s Hospital confirmed the hospital was treating the baby Monday, but said her condition wasn’t immediately available.

New York Police Department divers pulled Ruhshona Kurbonova’s body from the water in Prospect Park on Saturday night after a frantic five-hour search.

Police were called at around 1 p.m., after Ruhshona and a toddler boy in the family strayed from the gathering. The boy was found soaked but safe.

States Look at Gun Seizure Law after Mass Killings

Newtown,-Conn.HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — As state officials across the country grapple with how to prevent mass killings like the one at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, some are turning to a gun seizure law pioneered in Connecticut 15 years ago.

Connecticut’s law was the first of its kind nationwide and was passed after the killings of four managers at the state lottery headquarters. It allows judges to order guns temporarily seized from people after police show they are a danger to themselves or others.

Indiana approved a similar law in 2005. And now California and New Jersey officials are debating gun seizure laws, both in the aftermath of the killings of six people near the University of California, Santa Barbara in May.

Gun rights advocates say such laws can violate people’s constitutional rights.

Doctors: 12-Year-Old Stabbing Suspect is Mentally Incompetent

ne-supreme-court-gavelWAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) — Doctors say one of two 12-year-old girls accused of stabbing a classmate to please a fictional online horror character is not competent to stand trial.

The doctors’ reports have not been made public, but attorneys said Wednesday that a doctor for the state of Wisconsin and a doctor hired by the girl’s defense agree that she is not mentally competent.

Prosecutors have asked for further evaluation and a hearing on the matter, and the judge has agreed.

Authorities have said the two girls plotted for months to kill their friend to curry favor with the specter known as Slender Man. A criminal complaint says they lured her to a wooded park west of Milwaukee on May 31 and stabbed her 19 times.

The victim is now recovering at home.

NIH Creates Network to Tackle Mysterious Diseases

national-institute-of-healthWASHINGTON (AP) — The government is expanding its “mystery disease” program, funding a network at six universities to help diagnose patients’ super-rare diseases.

The National Institutes of Health has evaluated hundreds of these cold-case patients in its campus research hospital as part of a pilot program since 2008. Demand is so great, there’s a waiting list.

So on Tuesday, the agency announced the NIH Undiagnosed Diseases Network, a four-year, $43 million initiative to bring more doctor-detectives on board. The goal is to at least put a name to more patients’ puzzling symptoms, and then eventually find treatments.

The centers include: Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Duke University, Stanford University, University of California, Los Angeles, Vanderbilt University and the Harvard University teaching hospitals Brigham and Women’s, Massachusetts General and Boston Children’s.

Grandmother Arrested after Toddler Drinks Meth Tea

METHIDYLLWILD, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in Southern California say a 51-year-old woman has been arrested on child-endangerment charges after her 2-year-old granddaughter drank tea with methamphetamine in it.

Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Craig McDonald says the toddler’s mother called authorities Monday morning saying the child had not slept and was talking rapidly, scratching, and couldn’t sit still.

The girl was taken to a hospital, where it was determined she had meth in her system.

McDonald says investigators found that the grandmother, Cynthia Watson, made a cup of tea the night before and put meth in it “to get herself high.” The girl apparently drank it when the cup was unattended.

Watson, who was visiting from Oregon, was held on $35,000 bail. She’s expected in court Wednesday. It wasn’t immediately known if she has a lawyer.

The toddler is expected to make a full recovery.
