Justice Department to Collect Data on Stops, Arrests

(AP) — Attorney General Eric Holder says the Justice Department plans to collect data on police stops, searches and arrests in an effort to study racial bias in law enforcement.

Holder said in a video message Monday that the data will be collected in five pilot cities over two years as part of a new initiative called the National Center for Building Community Trust and Justice. He said racial disparities in the criminal justice system “breed resentment” toward law enforcement.

The $4.75 million project will be funded through grants; the cities will be named later.

After the acquittal of neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the Florida death of Trayvon Martin, President Barack Obama directed the Justice Department to work with local law enforcement to help ease tensions between police and minorities.

(AP) — Prosecutors have filed six first-degree murder charges against a Utah woman accused of killing six babies after giving birth to them, and keeping their bodies in boxes in her garage.

The charges were filed Monday morning shortly before 39-year-old Megan Huntsman appeared in court for the second time. She was informed of the charges during the brief hearing.

Prosecutors say Huntsman is the only suspect in the deaths of the babies. They say a seventh dead infant found in the garage appears to have been stillborn.

Investigators believe Huntsman’s estranged husband, Darren West, is the babies’ father, though they are awaiting DNA results to confirm that. West is not a suspect.

Huntsman is being held on $6 million bail.

Authorities say they think they know her motive, but they have declined to reveal it publicly.

Tornadoes Kill 16 in Arkansas, 1 in Oklahoma

arkansas tornado april 2014(AP) — A state agency has raised the death toll from a huge tornado that cut a sporadic 80-mile path through central Arkansas to 16.

The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management reported on its website early Monday that there are now 10 confirmed deaths from Sunday’s tornado in Faulkner County. There are still five confirmed deaths in Pulaski County and one in White County.

The tornado touched down Sunday about 10 miles west of Little Rock at about 7 p.m., then carved a 80-mile path of destruction as it passed through or near several suburbs north of Arkansas’ capital city. It grew to be a half-mile wide and remained on the ground for much of that route, authorities said.

The tornado was the largest of several spawned by a powerful storm system moving through the central and southern United States. It also formed a tornado that killed a person in Quapaw, Okla., on Sunday before moving northward into Kansas.

Teen’s Arm Severed in New York Eatery’s Pasta Machine

odd-news(AP) — A teenage employee at an Italian restaurant in northern New York has severed his arm while cleaning a pasta machine.

A spokeswoman for Massachusetts General Hospital tells The Associated Press that 17-year-old Brett Bouchard was listed in serious condition there Sunday morning.

He was flown there after the accident Thursday night at Violi’s Restaurant in Massena on the Canadian border.

Restaurant manager Mia Violi tells The Watertown Daily Times that Bouchard was cleaning the pasta machine when his right arm got caught and severed at the elbow. She says employees are trying to figure out how the machine got activated while he was cleaning it.

It’s not yet clear whether the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate the accident.

California Mom Tells Police She Stabbed Infant Son

police-lights-red(AP) — Police say a woman admitted that she stabbed her 7-month-old son to death in a popular Northern California park.

Chief Timothy Anderson of the East Bay Regional Parks District Police Department said Sunday in a statement that the 23-year-old mother from San Jose had a history of depression and appeared to have self-inflicted knife wounds on her wrist.

Police were called Saturday on reports of a damaged Honda sedan in the Del Valle Regional Park east of San Francisco. They found the car abandoned with the engine running and an empty child’s seat.

Anderson says they were about to tow the car when the woman approached them holding her lifeless baby.

Investigators said they found a knife in the area.

The woman remains in jail on suspicion of murder.

West Point Works to Boost Female Cadet Numbers

west-point(AP) — Less than one in five cadets at West Point is a woman, and the academy’s new superintendent wants to change that.

With the Pentagon lifting restrictions for women in combat jobs, Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen Jr. has set a goal of boosting the number of women above 20 percent for the new class reporting this summer.

Women have been a presence at the nation’s military academies since 1976. But they remain in the minority, just as they do in the broader military.

Caslen became superintendent last year. He says an increased number of female cadets at the storied academy will do more than serve the Army when thousands of combat positions are slated to open to both sexes by 2016. He says it will help integrate women at the academy.

Drug Maker Developing Abuse-Deterrent Painkiller

zohydro(AP) — The San Diego company that makes the powerful new prescription painkiller Zohydro is selling off its migraine therapy business to focus on developing abuse-resistant forms of Zohydro.

Zogenix Chief Executive Officer Roger Hawley said the sale will help the company focus on the launch of Zohydro ER while providing capital “to continue the development of two abuse-deterrent formulations” of the opioid.

The company announced in November it would pursue an abuse-deterrent form of the drug.

Health officials around the country worry addicts will crush Zohydro capsules and then snort or inject the drug to get high.

Citing such worries, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick tried to ban the drug, but a federal court blocked the state from enforcing the ban. Patrick has since announced new restrictions on the drug.

Teens Accused of Killing Amish Family’s Pet Donkey

police-lights-redMONTGOMERY, Pa. (AP) — Three central Pennsylvania teenagers have been accused of fatally shooting a pet donkey on an Amish family’s farm.

The boys were charged Thursday, about a week after the donkey was shot 18 times on the Clinton Township farm in Lycoming County.

Amos Yoder and his family have lots of animals. But he says the 6-year-old Jerusalem miniature donkey named Eeyore was his children’s pet.

Yoder says the children would take turns riding Eeyore and the neighborhood children would pet him on their way to school.

Two 15-year-old boys and a 16-year-old boy are charged with cruelty to animals and weapons violations. State police say the teenagers each shot Eeyore six times.

The teens also admit shooting several deer. Additional charges will be filed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

11 Kids, Driver Hurt in Calif. School Bus Crash

bus-accident(AP) — Authorities say 11 middle school students and their driver were injured in a school bus crash in Southern California.

Anaheim police Lt. Bob Dunn says three of the injured — the driver and two of the children — are in critical condition after the Thursday afternoon crash. The other nine students had minor injuries.

Television news reports show the Orange Unified School District bus tilted sideways and leaning against a tree on a roadside embankment next to Anaheim Hills Golf Course. Police say no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The driver was trapped inside the bus, and firefighters removed him before he was taken to the hospital.

The California Highway Patrol will take over the investigation. There is no immediate word on the cause of the crash.

Company Stopped from Accepting Abortion Waste

odd-news(AP) — Marion County commissioners have given final approval to an order to stop a company from receiving medical waste until procedures are in place to prevent the burning of fetal material to generate power.

While taking the action Thursday, commissioners said they were horrified and disgusted to learn that Covanta Marion was burning abortion waste to generate electricity.

Commissioners Sam Brentano and Janet Carlson made the decision at an emergency hearing. Both strongly oppose abortion rights.

The facility is owned and operated by Covanta in a partnership with the county. It processes 550 tons of municipal solid waste a day, with only a small portion coming from medical sources.

Covanta Marion did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment. The firm did not have a representative at the hearing.
