16-Year-Old Survives in Wheel Well of Maui Flight

FBI(AP) — FBI officials say a 16-year-old boy stowed away in the wheel well of a flight from California to Hawaii, surviving the trip halfway across the Pacific Ocean unharmed despite frigid temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen.

FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night that the boy was questioned by the FBI after being discovered on the tarmac at the Maui airport with no identification.

Simon says security footage from the San Jose airport verified that the boy from Santa Clara, Calif., hopped a fence to get to Hawaiian Airlines Flight 45 on Sunday morning. Simon says the child had run away from his family.

Simon says the boy was released to child protective services and not charged with a crime.

Wyatt Earp Gun Sells for $225K at Auction

wyatt-earp(AP) — A gun thought to have been carried by Wyatt Earp during the famous O.K. Corral shootout in Tombstone has sold for $225,000.

A telephone bidder in New Mexico made the winning bid for the Colt .45 revolver Thursday night.

J. Levine Auction & Appraisal officials say an auction of numerous items related to Earp and his family in Scottsdale, Ariz., brought in more than $445,000.

The auction house initially valued the Colt between $100,000 and $150,000.

The items belonged to the estate of Glenn Boyer, an author of several books on Earp. Boyer died in February 2013.

Some have questioned the items’ authenticity while others say Boyer was a credible researcher.

A Chandler man spent $150,000 on a shotgun owned by Earp, a family archive and other items.

Deputies: Man Smothered Crying Son Over Video Game

police-lights-red(AP) — Sheriff’s deputies in north Florida say a man suffocated his young, crying son so he could play video games.

Authorities say 24-year-old Cody Wygant is charged with third-degree murder and child neglect. He was being held Friday without bail at the Citrus County Jail.

Sixteen-month-old Daymeon Wygant wasn’t breathing when emergency crews arrived at the home Thursday morning. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

According to investigators, Wygant said the boy was crying uncontrollably, preventing him from playing his Xbox games. He covered the boy’s nose and mouth for three to four minutes until the boy became lethargic, then placed him in a playpen and covered him with bedding.

Deputies say Wygant didn’t check on Daymeon for five hours.

His infant daughter is in the Department of Children and Families’ custody.

Salmonella Decline Found in Food Poisoning Report

cdc(AP) — The government’s latest report card on food poisoning is out, and it has some good news: a drop in illnesses from salmonella.

Last year, salmonella cases fell 9 percent, compared to the previous three years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that’s the largest drop in a decade.

But officials were cautious about making too much of it. Last year was compared to a time period that included a large salmonella outbreak tied to eggs.

Overall, there wasn’t much change. The CDC report found no significant change in most kinds of food poisoning. There was a spike in illnesses caused by a bacteria found in raw shellfish like oysters, but the number of cases was still relatively small.

Father Says Daughter Called Him from Sinking Van

water(AP) — The husband of a New Jersey woman accused of driving their children into a river says one of the teens called him from the sinking van.

Jeffrey Smith tells The Associated Press his daughter then kicked out a window and was rescued by a good Samaritan.

Police say the passer-by, Darnell Taylor, also helped Smith’s wife and two of their sons get out of the car. Smith says the boys had called 911 from the submerged vehicle.

Smith says he was running errands with a fourth child Tuesday when his wife allegedly drove into the Delaware River in Florence Township. Joann Smith is charged with attempted murder.

Jeffrey Smith said Thursday that his wife has been battling mental illness for more than a decade.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities say a Utah woman accused of concealing seven pregnancies before allegedly strangling or suffocating her newborns gave birth each time in her home.

Pleasant Grove Police Capt. Mike Roberts said Wednesday that investigators have determined that 39-year-old Megan Huntsman did not go to a hospital to have the babies. He didn’t say if anybody helped her give birth.

Huntsman acknowledged to police that she killed six of the babies. One was stillborn.

She was arrested Sunday on six counts of murder and is being held on $6 million bail.

Roberts said Huntsman also hid her pregnancies with her two oldest daughters, now in their early 20s, from extended family until she was at the hospital.

Roberts said investigators have a theory on her motive but aren’t discussing it publicly.

(AP) — Classes have resumed at a Pittsburgh-area high school one week after authorities say a student stabbed or slashed 21 others and a security guard while rampaging through a hallway with two kitchen knives.

Before school began, students gathered Wednesday morning on the football field behind Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville to pray and to support one another.

Students who drove to school — or were driven on buses or by their parents — were greeted by well-wishers from a nearby church who were holding signs of support saying things like “Courage” and “It’s a new day.”

The suspect, 16-year-old Alex Hribal is being held in a juvenile facility but is charged as an adult with aggravated assault and attempted homicide in the April 9 stabbings. Four students remain hospitalized.

FDA OKs Merch Tablet to Reduce Grass Allergies

fda(AP) — Merck & Co. says the Food and Drug Administration has approved its new tablet for grass allergies, Grastek, for patients five to 65 years old.

Meant as an alternative to weekly allergy shots, the tablet dissolves under the tongue. Taken daily for a few years, it gradually reduces sensitivity to common grasses, instead of temporarily relieving symptoms including sneezing, runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes.

Merck, based in Whitehouse Station, N.J., will market the tablet in North America. Its partner, ALK-Abello, sells it in Europe as Grazas.

Merck said Grastek will be available in U.S. pharmacies in late April. However, it’s best to start taking it three months before grass pollen season begins.

The drug can cause severe allergic reactions and shouldn’t be used by patients with severe asthma.

(AP) — A St. Louis-area man is accused of sexually torturing five women in his apartment over several years.

Authorities on Tuesday announced that 29-year-old Adam Michael Capriglione of south St. Louis County is facing 19 felony charges that include forcible rape, forcible sodomy, felonious restraint and domestic assault. He’s jailed on $500,000 bond.

Police spokesman Brian Schellman says an investigation began after one of the victims contacted police in January. Capriglione is accused of raping, sodomizing and torturing five women dating back to 2006.

He also faces one count of sexual exploitation of a minor for allegedly filming a child having sex in 2007.

Capriglione’s attorney, Joseph Green, says facts will come to light in support of his client as the case moves forward.
