Death Toll in Washington Mudslide Rises to 37

snohomish-county-sheriff(AP) — The death toll from the mudslide that hit the Washington town of Oso has risen to 37.

The Snohomish County medical examiner’s office said Tuesday it has received one more victim. The person’s name has not been released.

The sheriff’s office says seven other people are still listed as missing.

A search for bodies continues in the debris left when the March 22 landslide raced across the North Fork of the Stillaguamish River and buried dozens of homes in the riverfront community about 55 miles northeast of Seattle.

Questions Linger Year After Boston Marathon Bombing

boston-marathon-explosion(AP) — A year after the Boston Marathon bombings, prosecutors say they have a trove of evidence to use against suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR’ tsahr-NEYE’-ehv).

But there are still many unanswered questions. How much did he do to help plan and carry out the attacks? Was his brother Tamerlan the “main instigator,” as Dzhokhar’s lawyers say? And did federal authorities underreact to a warning from Russia that Tamerlan was becoming radicalized?

Prosecutors say they have surveillance video showing Dzhokhar placing one of the bombs just yards from an 8-year-old boy who died in the blast. They also say Dzhokhar wrote a defiant confession inside a boat he was found hiding in several days after the bombings.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a shootout with police. Dzhokhar has pleaded not guilty and is facing a November trial.

Utah Woman Arrested After 7 Dead Babies Found

police-lights-red(AP)–Police accused a Utah woman of killing seven babies she gave birth to over 10 years after they found the tiny bodies stuffed in cardboard boxes in the garage of her former home.

Megan Huntsman lived in the Pleasant Grove home until three years ago and was arrested Sunday. Police say the 39-year-old birthed the infants from 1996 to 2006.

Police Capt. Michael Roberts says officers responded to a call Saturday from Huntsman’s estranged husband about a dead infant at the home about 35 miles south of Salt Lake City. Officers then discovered the six other bodies.

Roberts says the man had lived with Huntsman but isn’t a person of interest.

Huntsman was booked into jail on six counts of murder. Roberts says it wasn’t clear if she has an attorney.

Ohio Man Sits at Corner with ‘I AM A BULLY!’ Sign

judgeship(AP) — An Ohio man is sitting on a street corner with a sign declaring he’s a bully as part of his sentence for harassing a neighbor and her disabled children.

A judge ordered 62-year-old Edmond Aviv to display the sign for five hours Sunday. It says: “I AM A BULLY! I pick on children that are disabled, and I am intolerant of those that are different from myself. My actions do not reflect an appreciation for the diverse South Euclid community that I live in.”

Aviv arrived at the corner just before 9 a.m., placing the hand-lettered sign next to him as he sat in a chair. Court records show Aviv pleaded no contest to a disorderly conduct charge.

10 Killed as Truck, Bus Carrying Students Collide

california-highway-patrol(AP) — The California Highway Patrol says the drivers of a FedEx delivery truck and a charter bus carrying high school students on a college visit are among the 10 people who were killed in a fiery crash on a Northern California interstate.

In addition to both drivers, the patrol says three adult chaperones and five teenage students were killed in the crash Thursday on Interstate 5 near Orland. Their identities haven’t been released.

The patrol says the bus and truck were on opposite sides of the freeway when the truck crossed a grass median and slammed into the bus, causing an explosion and fire.

Investigators say the truck driver might have been trying to avoid a passenger car that was also involved in the crash.

Washington Sewage Treatment Plant Invites Weddings

wedding-rings(AP) — A sewage treatment plant near Seattle is advertising its availability as a wedding venue.

The Brightwater Wastewater Treatment Center says on Facebook it has a full catering kitchen, audio-video equipment, dance floor and ample parking.

You could even hold the wedding outside.

The director of the Brightwater Environmental Education and Community Center, Susan Tallarico, said that receptions would take place just steps away from where raw sewage is processed. She says there’s no odor because all the processing is contained.

The King County plant was finished three years ago but has been available for rent for about seven months.

It costs $2,000 to rent the center for eight hours. One couple has already booked the sewage plant for their nuptials.

Prosecutor: School Stabber Used Kitchen Knives

Alex Hribal

(AP) — The district attorney says a 16-year-old charged with stabbing 21 other students and a security officer at his Pittsburgh-area high school used two “ordinary kitchen knives.”

Westmoreland County District Attorney John Peck called the weapons “common items you’d find in a kitchen.”

However, he stopped short of saying that the suspect, Alex Hribal, took them from his own home.

Peck says he doubts anyone other than Hribal will be held criminally responsible for bringing the knives to Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville on Wednesday.

The prosecutor says the knives weren’t designed to be weapons and didn’t need to be stored in any particular way under the law.

Hribal is being held without bail in a juvenile detention center, though he’s charged as an adult with attempted homicide and aggravated assault.

NC Man Sentenced to Jail for Sucking Woman’s Toes

odd-news(AP) — A North Carolina man who sucked an unwilling woman’s toes inside a Wal-Mart has been sentenced to 60 days in jail.

Michael Anthony Brown apologized for his actions during his court appearance Thursday. He was convicted of assault, but a judge agreed to subtract the three weeks Brown has spent behind bars from the sentence.

Police said the 31-year-old Brown told the victim he was a podiatry student and asked her to try on shoes for him in the shoe department of the Wal-Mart in Lincolnton last month.

Investigators said Brown eventually stuck the woman’s foot in his mouth and sucked on her toes, then offered to pay for her groceries after she appeared outraged.

Brown was apprehended at his home in Concord and turned over to Lincolnton police.

(AP) — An Arizona woman who left her 5-week-old baby in a car seat on the roof of her car when she drove off has been sentenced to 16 years of supervised probation.

Catalina Clouser pleaded guilty to child abuse and misdemeanor DUI in February. She was sentenced Wednesday by Cynthia Bailey of Maricopa County Superior Court.

Phoenix police arrested Clouser last year after an infant strapped in a safety seat was found in an intersection. The baby was in good condition.

According to police, Clouser forgot the boy was on the roof her car when she left the home of friends where she had smoked marijuana.

Clouser was sentenced to three months of deferred time in jail, but she won’t have to serve that time if she successfully completes probation.
