Study Links Breast Cancer Gene to Rare Uterine Tumors

Medical-Chart(AP)–A study suggests that women with a faulty breast cancer gene might have a greater chance of developing rare but deadly uterine tumors despite having their ovaries removed to lower their main cancer risks.

Doctors at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York say four cases of aggressive uterine cancers were found in about 300 women years after they had preventive surgery to remove their ovaries. That rate is 26 times greater than expected.

The problem was only seen in women with flawed BRCA1 genes. Doctors say that until more research confirms this link, it is too soon to advise such women to have their uterus removed along with their ovaries, but that it is worth discussing.

The study was reported Monday at a cancer conference in Tampa, Fla.

Official: 108 Names on List of Missing in Washington Mudslide

snohomish-county-sheriff(AP) — Authorities say there are 108 names on the list of people who’ve been reported missing or unaccounted for in the weekend mudslide in Washington state.

Snohomish County emergency management director John Pennington says that doesn’t mean there are 108 injuries or fatalities. But he says it’s the consolidated list of reported missing from various sources that authorities are working from.

Pennington says the slide occurred on a Saturday morning, when more people were likely to be home.

At least eight people were killed in the 1-square-mile slide that hit in a rural area about 55 miles northeast of Seattle.

Several people also were critically injured, and about 30 homes were destroyed.

Officials: Missing Malaysian Airlines Jet Crashed, No Survivors

malaysian-airlines(AP) — Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak says a new analysis of satellite data indicates the missing Malaysia Airlines plane plunged into a remote corner of the Indian Ocean.

The news is a major breakthrough in the unprecedented two-week struggle to find out what happened to Flight 370, which disappeared shortly after takeoff from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew aboard on March 8.

Dressed in a black suit, Najib announced the news “with deep sadness and regret” in a brief news conference late Monday night.

He said Malaysia Airlines has informed the families of passengers of the plane’s fate.

Najib said the information was based on an unprecedented analysis of satellite data from Inmarsat.

Starbucks to Roll Out Beer, Wine to More Cafes

starbucks-coffee(AP) — Starbucks plans to turn more of its cafes into a destination for beer and wine in the evenings.

The coffee company says it is looking to expand alcohol sales to “thousands of select stores” over the next several years.

The chain first offered beer and wine at one of its Seattle cafes in 2010. It’s now in about 26 cafes, with plans to reach 40 by the end of the year.

The cafes with alcohol also serve a variety of small dishes, such as flatbreads and bacon-wrapped dates.

It’s part of the chain’s push to boost sales after the morning rush hour. To attract more afternoon customers, for instance, the company recently introduced new sandwiches and salads.

There are about 11,000 Starbucks stores in the U.S.

Mattress Used to Break Toddler’s Fall from Window

good-deeds(AP) — A 3-year-old boy who fell out a third-story window in California was saved by a quick-acting couple who threw out a mattress to break his fall.

Konrad Lightner and his wife, Jennifer, were moving out of their Burbank apartment Sunday when they noticed the toddler and his sister throwing their toys out the window.

When they saw the little boy throw his leg over the windowsill, Konrad rushed to put down the mattress. He was able to break the child’s fall, placing him onto the mattress.

The toddler was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, but he suffered no major injuries.

A neighbor rushed to get the boy’s parents, who were unaware of what happened but grateful for the rescue.

2 Winning Tickets Sold in $414 Million Mega Millions Jackpot

mega-millions(AP) — The holders of two lucky tickets sold states apart will split a $414 million Mega Millions jackpot, the sixth-largest lottery prize in U.S. history.

Numbers were drawn Tuesday, and lottery officials said Wednesday that winning tickets were sold in Florida and Maryland.

Mega Millions says strong sales pushed the jackpot past the $400 million mark.

Florida’s ticket was purchased at a Sunoco convenience store in Merritt Island on the Space Coast. News vans lingered there Wednesday. Some neighbors were taken aback by the activity but say they’re glad the winner may be a local.

The Florida winner has 180 days to come forward. A name and city of residence will be released.

Maryland’s ticket was sold at Lady’s Liquor in La Plata, south of Washington. The winner has 182 days to claim the prize and can remain anonymous.

14 Charged in Online Child Exploitation Network

Homeland-Security(AP) — Federal authorities say they’ve arrested 14 people in connection with an online child exploitation network that operated in the United States and overseas.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh (jay) Johnson and other officials announced the arrests Tuesday. They say the network involved roughly 250 child victims in 39 states and five countries. Most were boys between the ages of 13 and 15.

Johnson says the investigation disrupted a subscription-based website of more than 27,000 members who were involved in producing and distributing child pornography images.

Authorities say the alleged leader of the operation has admitted creating multiple fake female personas to entice boys to produce sexually explicit images of themselves.

Eleven of the 14 defendants have been charged in Louisiana. The three remaining defendants are in other states.

(AP) — In the nearly 40 years after he escaped from a Kansas military prison, convicted killer James Robert Jones carved out a new life for himself in Florida.

He lived under an assumed name, got married and worked for an air conditioning company. But it all came to an end Thursday when Jones — or Bruce Walter Keith, as the former Army private was known in Florida — was recaptured with the help of facial-recognition software.

Barry Golden of the U.S. Marshals Service said Friday that the first words out of Jones’ mouth were: “I knew this would catch up with me someday.”

The 59-year-old Jones was one of the Army’s 15 most-wanted fugitives after his 1977 escape from the Kansas prison dubbed “The Castle.”

He was convicted of murder and assault in the 1974 killing of fellow soldier Lonnie Eaton at Fort Dix in New Jersey.

Jones was originally from Ontario, Calif.
