Miss. Man Dies 2 Weeks After Waking Up in Body Bag

odd-news(AP) — A coroner says a 78-year-old Mississippi man has died two weeks after he woke up in a body bag at a funeral home after being mistakenly pronounced deceased.

Holmes County Coroner Dexter Howard says Walter Williams died at his home in Lexington around 1 a.m. Thursday. The cause was not released.

Williams’ story went viral after he was pronounced dead on Feb. 26. At Porter and Sons Funeral Home, workers were getting ready to embalm him when Williams started to move.

Williams was rushed to a hospital and he was released a few days later. Doctors say a mix of medicines may have caused his vital signs to appear unresponsive.

Family members also said Williams’ pacemaker may have stopped working and started again.

Graco Adds More Than 403,000 Child Seats to Recall

graco-car-seat(AP) — Graco Children’s Products has added 403,222 child seats to last month’s recall of 3.8 million to replace faulty harness buckles.

But the added seats won’t end a dispute with the U.S. government’s road safety watchdog. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration still wants Graco to add 1.8 million infant seats to the recall because they have the same buckles.

Buckles can get gummed up by food and drinks, making it difficult to remove children. In some cases parents have had to cut harnesses to get their children out. The agency says the problem increases the injury risk in emergencies.

Graco says in a letter to the agency that it found additional toddler and harnessed booster seats that should be recalled. The company still believes the infant seats should be excluded.

Police: Driver Kills 2 at South by Southwest Festival

south-by-southwest-festival(AP) — Police say a man and woman have been killed after a suspected drunken driver fleeing from arrest crashed through barricades set up for the South By Southwest festival and struck the pair and others on a crowded street.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo says 23 others were injured, five of them critically, in the incident around 12:30 a.m. Thursday. He says the two people who died were on a mo-ped that the motorist hit along with pedestrians who were leaving a club where a concert had been held.

The chief says the man also struck a cab before jumping out of his car and trying to run. Officers shocked him with a stun gun and took him into custody.

Acevedo says the man faces two counts of capital murder.

Groups Protest Chemicals Used in iPhones

Apple(AP) — An environmental protection group and labor rights group are trying to pressure Apple into abandoning two hazardous chemicals used to make iPhones.

Green America and China Labor Watch launched their campaign Wednesday to protect the health of factory workers assembling the devices in China. The groups unveiled an online petition protesting the use of benzene and n-hexane in the production of iPhones. Benzene is a carcinogen that can cause leukemia if not handled properly and n-hexane has been linked to nerve damage.

Apple Inc. says it has already removed a long list of toxic chemicals and ensures all remaining toxic substances comply with U.S. safety standards.

The protesting groups contend that it would cost Apple less than $1 per iPhone to come up with a safer manufacturing recipe.

2 NYC Apartment Buildings Collapse, 2 Dead, Others Missing

fdny(AP) — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says people are still missing after an explosion leveled two apartment buildings, killing two people and injuring 18 others.

De Blasio says: “There are a number of missing individuals.” He suggests some may have fled to safety and says the city is expending every effort to locate the people who are still unaccounted for.

The mayor urged worried relatives to call 311. A hotline was being set up.

The mayor says Con Edison is shutting down all gas mains going into the building.

He says a gas leak was reported to the utility 15 minutes before the explosion. The explosion occurred before the Con Edison team arrived.

Judge Denies New Trial in Slaying of Missouri Girl

(AP) — A judge has denied a new trial for a young Missouri woman who pleaded guilty to murder for the slaying of a 9-year-old neighbor girl.

Alyssa Bustamante was 15 years old in 2009 when she killed Elizabeth Olten and buried her in a wooded area near Jefferson City. Bustamante wrote in her diary that it was an “ahmazing” and “pretty enjoyable” experience.

Bustamante originally was charged with first-degree murder. That would have carried a mandatory life sentence without parole. She pleaded guilty to a second degree murder and was sentenced to life with the chance of parole.

Several months after her plea, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled juveniles cannot face automatic life sentences.

Bustamante claimed she would not have pleaded guilty if she had known that case was pending.

Ohio Students, Teacher Charged in Bullying Case

gavel-and-scale(AP) — A substitute teacher and five students at a suburban Cleveland high school face charges after police say a 14-year-old developmentally disabled boy was bullied in gym class.

Police say the boy was knocked down by a volleyball thrown at his head last month at Parma Senior High School. One student then allegedly kicked the victim and another dragged him around by his feet.

Police say 49-year-old Gregg Mellinger continued class in another part of the gym as the victim remained on the floor.

Mellinger, of North Ridgeville, was charged last week with child endangering. He didn’t immediately return a phone call Monday.

Three students face juvenile charges of assault and two students are charged with disorderly conduct.

Authorities say the boy wasn’t seriously injured. School officials called the conduct unacceptable.

Los Angeles Police Arrest Man in Severed Head Case

lapd(AP) — Los Angeles police say they’ve solved the case of a severed human head found two years ago near the Hollywood sign.

Police said Monday they’ve arrested 38-year-old Gabriel Campos Martinez for the 2012 murder of 66-year-old Hervey Coronado Medellin of Los Angeles. Martinez was arrested in San Antonio, Texas, on Sunday with the help of local authorities and is being held without bail while he awaits extraditing proceedings.

Two women discovered what turned out to be Medellin’s head while walking several dogs through a trail in Griffith Park. A cadaver dog named Indiana Bones and investigators helped find more body parts, including hands and feet, near the same area where the head was discovered.

Woman’s Mummified Body Found in Detroit-Area Home, Died 6 Years Ago

odd-news(AP) — The mummified body of a woman has been found in a vehicle parked in the garage of a foreclosed home north of Detroit.

The Oakland County sheriff’s office says an employee of a property management company stumbled upon the body in the rear seat of the vehicle while doing a walk-through Wednesday at the house in Pontiac.

An autopsy was performed Thursday and found no trauma to the body. A cause of death has yet to be determined.

The body is believed to be that of a 49-year-old woman whose last known address was at that home.

Neighbors have told investigators that they haven’t seen the woman who lived in the house and believed she moved away at least three years ago. They say the woman kept to herself.

Couple Accused of Letting 2-Year-Old Smoke Pot

handcuffs(AP) — A Montana couple faces charges for allegedly letting a 2-year-old boy smoke marijuana.

Lucas Keith Wilson and Camilla Rose Samuels were charged on Feb. 27 with felony and misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child. A $50,000 arrest warrant was issued for Wilson. No warrant was issued for Samuels.

Court records say the investigation began in August when Samuels’ mother told investigators she found a video on her daughter’s phone showing Wilson’s son putting a pipe in his mouth.

Prosecutors say both Wilson and Samuels told investigators they let the boy smoke marijuana five times since August. Wilson said it would make the boy mellow.

Charging documents say the couple recently had a baby that tested positive for marijuana and meth when he was born.
