Judge Rules for Samsung in Dispute with Apple

Apple(AP) — A federal judge in California has denied Apple’s request to permanently ban Samsung from selling 23 older-model smartphones and tablets smartphones that a jury found infringed on patents held by the maker of iPhones and iPads.

Judge Lucy Koh on Thursday said Apple failed to prove that the South Korean company’s patent infringement caused irreparable harm to Apple sales.

Apple accused Samsung of ripping off designs for its iPhone and iPad. A jury in 2012 found that close to two dozen of Samsung’s products used technology controlled by Apple.

Apple’s allegations involved touchscreen features such as tapping and swiping.

Koh said she was not convinced those features drive consumer demand for Samsung products.

The two biggest smartphone makers are scheduled to begin a third patent trial later this month.

Girl Scout Cookies Bought with Phony Dough

girlscout-cookies(AP) — Officials in Southern California say someone has been buying Girl Scout cookies with counterfeit cash.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has released photos of a woman entering and leaving a grocery store who they say is a person of interest in the case of the phony dough. The photos show a young woman with long black hair, jeans, sneakers and a black hooded sweatshirt. No names or other identifying details have been released.

Police in Lake Elsinore learned last week that someone had bought Girl Scout cookies outside a grocery store with counterfeit currency, and were looking for a suspect who had not been seen since.

3rd Graders at California School Caught with Pot

odd-news(AP) — Police in a Central California city are trying to determine how three third-graders caught smoking marijuana got the drug.

Sonora Police Chief Mark Stinson says the two 8-year-olds and a 9-year-old were discovered by another student last week at Sonora Elementary School. Superintendent Leigh Shampain told KPIX-TV the students were smoking in a school bathroom.

The student who found the smokers told school officials, who contacted police. The third-graders were released to their parents.

Stinson said on Wednesday police were looking into whether someone supplied the drug to the kids.

KPIX-TV said Shampain would not discuss how the third-graders might be disciplined.

Studies Show Big Promise for HIV Prevention Drug

cdcA shot every one to three months may someday give an alternative to the daily pills that some people take now to cut their risk of getting HIV from sex with an infected partner.

Scientists say a long-acting, experimental drug completely protected monkeys from infection in two studies reported at an AIDS conference in Boston on Tuesday.

If testing in people shows the same, the shots could become a new tool to curb the spread of HIV. There’s already a daily pill that can be taken by those who don’t have the virus but are at risk of getting it from an infected partner.

The studies were done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and researchers at Rockefeller University in New York.

Air Force Academy Launches Another Cheating Probe

air-force(AP) — The Air Force Academy in Colorado is conducting its fourth probe of cheating at the school since 2004.

Academy officials said Monday about 40 cadets may have copied portions of a lab report assignment.

Superintendent Lt. Gen. Michelle D. Johnson said in a statement that any cadets found guilty will be held accountable.

The disclosure follows separate investigations launched by the U.S. Air Force in January after dozens of nuclear missile officers at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana allegedly cheated on their launch proficiency exams.

The alleged cheating, which was disclosed by Air Force officials, was the latest in a string of nuclear missteps revealed last year by The Associated Press.

Alzheimer’s Buddy Program Pairs Patients, Students

northwestern-university(AP) — A retired Chicago physician and educator is getting a bittersweet last chance to teach about medicine. This time Dr. Dan Winship is the subject.

He’s 80 and in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Winship is among patients in a buddy program that gives medical students a close-up look at a disease they’ll likely see often in their careers.

Alzheimer’s affects millions nationwide and the numbers are expected to keep rising.

Northwestern University is among a handful of medical schools that run Alzheimer buddy programs. Students and patients socialize often and get to know each other during the school year.

Winship is paired with first-year med student Jared Worthington. He says the best part is just getting to hang out together.

Disney Ends Funding to Boy Scouts Over Gay Policy

boy-scouts(AP) — The Walt Disney Company will cut funding to the Boy Scouts of America beginning in 2015 because of a policy that bans gay adult leaders in the organization.

Deron Smith, a Boy Scouts spokesman, said in a statement Sunday that the decision will affect the organization’s ability to serve children.

Disney does not provide direct funding to the Boy Scouts, but it donates money to some troops in exchange for volunteer hours completed by Disney employees.

Smith says the program has provided small grants to local Scout troops and packs.

David Jefferson, chief spokesman for The Walt Disney Company, did not respond to calls or emails.

The Boy Scouts lifted a ban on gay youth last year, but a ban on gay adult leaders remains.

Man Wakes Up in Body Bag at Funeral Home

odd-news(AP) — Workers at a Mississippi funeral home say they found a man alive and kicking when they opened a body bag.

Holmes County Coroner Dexter Howard calls it a miracle that 78-year-old Walter Williams is alive.

The coroner was called to Williams’ home in Lexington, a community north of Jackson, where family members believed he had died.

Howard says Williams had no pulse and was pronounced dead Wednesday at 9 p.m.

Early Thursday, workers at Porter and Sons Funeral Home were preparing to embalm Williams when he started to kick in the body bag.

Family members were called and Williams was taken to a hospital. Howard says he believes Williams’ pacemaker stopped working, then started again.

Family members say Williams, a farmer, told them he’s happy to be alive.

(AP) — An Alabama man is seeking mercy after pleading guilty to trying to hire a Ku Klux Klan hitman to kill a black neighbor.

Attorneys for Allen Wayne Morgan describe the 30-year-old Munford man as a drug-addicted veteran of more than 175 combat missions in Iraq.

The defense says Morgan was suffering severe mental problems when he tried to arrange the hit last year and shouldn’t spend more than five years in prison.

Prosecutors are asking for a sentence twice that long during a sentencing hearing set for Thursday afternoon in Birmingham.

The government says Morgan tried his best to hire a supposed KKK member to kill a black neighbor he suspected of having sex with his wife.

The gunman turned out to be with the FBI, and Morgan was arrested.
