Suspect Arrested About an Hour After Lincoln Bank Heist

Jail-Bars-and-Cuffs_mediumLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 47-year-old suspect was arrested about an hour after a woman robbed a bank branch in Lincoln.

Police say the woman was taken into custody about 3 p.m. Thursday. A police sergeant working at a hospital spotted the woman, who fit the description of the robber at the Bank of the West.

Police say the bank was robbed a little before 2 p.m. by a woman who walked in talking on a phone. She strode up to a teller and demanded money but didn’t show a weapon. The robber then left with cash that she stuffed into a large purse. Capt. Don Scheinost says officers found the bag empty in a restroom at the nearby Community Mental Health Center.

Online court records don’t yet list any charges against the woman.

Cleaning Up Homes with Meth Labs a Growing Industry

meth-labMEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Tens of thousands of houses around the country have been used as clandestine methamphetamine labs the last decade, and a cottage industry is developing around cleaning them up.

Many Americans are more aware of the production of the highly addictive drug thanks to AMC’s hit show “Breaking Bad,” which featured a high school chemistry teacher who turned into a meth cook and dealer.

In real life, industrial hygienists and cleanup contractors deal with a property when a batch explodes or police raid an operation and shut it down.

However, there is little oversight of the growing industry in most states, opening the door for potential malfeasance. And some homeowners are reluctant to pay thousands of dollars to make a property safe, so many houses don’t get cleaned for years.

Board Dismisses Complaint Against Omaha Judge

judgeshipOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The state’s judicial oversight board has cleared an Omaha judge who was accused of unethical behavior for his actions in his adult daughter’s drunken-driving case.

The Nebraska Commission on Judicial Qualifications says District Judge Michael Coffey didn’t breach any state conduct rules.

The complaint was filed by Coffey’s former wife, Stacy Ryan, in February 2012. She alleged that he had improperly contacted probation officers regarding the actions of their eldest child, Megan Coffey, who’d been given a year of probation in March 2011 for her second DUI conviction.

The commission said Judge Coffey’s actions weren’t “threatening to any of the probation officers.”

The commission also said a judge “should not lose his or her rights and responsibilities as a parent simply because he or she holds judicial office.”

Omaha Man Pleads Guilty to Writing Bad Checks for Cattle

cattleBEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man is scheduled to be sentenced March 4 after being convicted in a bad-checks case in Gage County.

Online court documents say 48-year-old Russell Ortmeier pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of issuing bad checks after prosecutors lowered one count and agreed to dismiss another.

Ortmeier was accused of buying more than $68,000 worth of cattle from Beatrice 77 Livestock on Dec. 21 last year and nearly $29,000 worth on Jan. 4 this year. The two checks bounced after being deposited.

Ortmeier’s attorney told a judge at a hearing earlier this month that Ortmeier had already paid restitution of $69,000 to Beatrice 77 Livestock and intended to pay roughly $28,000 more.

Family Seeks Transfer of Brain Dead Calif. Girl

Jahi-McMathOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A lawyer for the family of a 13-year-old girl who was declared brain dead after complications from a tonsillectomy says Jahi McMath’s relatives want to transfer her to a nursing home that is willing to keep caring for her.

But lawyer Christopher Dolan said Thursday that doctors at Children’s Hospital Oakland need to insert breathing and feeding tubes into the girl before the nursing home can take her.

Dolan declined to name the care facility, but said it is located in the San Francisco Bay Area and is not equipped to perform surgeries.

Children’s Hospital wants to take Jahi off life support, a move that her family opposes.

A judge this week gave the hospital permission to proceed after 5 p.m. on Monday to give the girl’s mother time to appeal.
