Omaha Walmart Clerk’s Missing Ring Found in Shopping Bag

good-deedsOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha Walmart clerk is celebrating after shoppers found her missing diamond ring.

Ethell Perkins noticed her ring was missing about 10 days ago.

Days later Leslie Martinec was unpacking a bag of Christmas gifts her husband bought at Walmart when she stumbled on the ring. The family called Walmart right away to see what to do.

After reviewing surveillance video, the store determined that the ring had slipped off Perkins’ hand when she put something in the shopping bag.

Perkins says she is thrilled to have the ring she has worn for 20 years back.

Family of Neb. Teen Killed In Crash to Donate Organs

savannah-robertsonPLATTSMOUTH, Neb. (AP) — The family of a teen killed in a car accident says they will donate her organs to others.

Savannah Robertson’s family members say they will donate her organs and tissue.

Robertson, of Plattsmouth, was in a two-vehicle crash on Sunday on U.S. Highway 75. The 17-year-old died Monday. Robertson’s passenger, 14-year-old Jenna Miner, of Murray, died at the scene.

Robertson’s family says they decided to donate the teen’s organs while she was on life-support. Her father, Philip Robertson II, says he wants something good to come out of the accident.

The donation is being processed by Nebraska Organ Recovery. Robertson says his daughter’s organs will help eight people.

Omaha Man Gets Probation in Prostitution Case

dept.-of-justiceOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man has been sentenced to probation and fined $15,000 after pleading guilty to conspiracy involving three Omaha spas that were fronts for prostitution.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Christopher J. Tierney was sentenced Monday to three years of probation and the fine.

Tierney pleaded guilty on Aug. 19 to conspiracy to use facilities in interstate commerce in aid of a racketeering enterprise.

The attorney’s office says Tierney set up computer and electronic services for the spas, including websites where established customers could arrange appointments online. Tierney also set up and maintained surveillance cameras at two of the businesses and a text messaging system alerting workers to appointments.

Baby Jesus Stolen from Nativity Scene in Lincoln

lincoln-policeLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a Lincoln resident has reported the theft of an electric baby Jesus from a Nativity scene.

The 62-year-old man reported that the theft occurred in his front yard over the weekend.

Police spokeswoman Katie Flood says the man said the baby Jesus was the only part missing from his Christmas display.

Neb. Woman Who Had Sex with Stepson Violates Probation

judgeshipGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — A Grand Island woman already given probation for having sex with her teenage stepson is accused of violating probation again.

A motion to revoke probation of the 28-year-old woman was filed Monday. The Grand Island Police Department says officers found the woman and her now-17-year-old stepson together in a vehicle on Dec. 13. She’d been ordered not to have contact with him as a condition of probation.

In October she was resentenced to five years of probation for violating the original sentence of probation given her on May 8. She’d pleaded no contest to a charge of sexually assaulting the boy, starting when he was 15.

The Associated Press is not naming the woman in order to protect the identity of her stepson.

Man Shot During Lincoln Gunfight Gets Prison

matthew-guerraLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln man wounded in a July 4 gunfight last year has been sentenced to prison.

Online court records say 19-year-old Matthew Guerra on Monday was given 20 to 35 years for attempted discharge of a firearm near a building and five to 10 years for attempted use of a firearm to commit a felony. Guerra had pleaded no contest to both charges.

Police say the gunfight erupted after a motorist hit an 8-year-old boy lighting a firework in the street. The boy’s father, 41-year-old Orlando Sifuentez, was fatally wounded when he and other family members confronted Robert Robinson, the man they believed had hit the boy.

Robinson later was jailed for reckless driving.

The boy was treated at a local hospital for a busted lip.

Police: Colorado Teen Shot, Killed by Stepfather

crime-sceneCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Police say a 14-year-old Colorado girl was fatally shot by her stepfather after a report of a burglary at her home.

Colorado Springs police spokesman Larry Herbert said the girl’s stepfather fired the shot, but said it wasn’t known if he had mistaken the teen for a burglar.

Police say the girl was shot around 6 a.m. Monday and later died at the hospital.

The stepfather hasn’t been arrested or identified and it will be up to prosecutors to decide whether charges should be filed.

Herbert said police are looking at the stepfather’s intent and whether he acted recklessly as they investigate the shooting.

Colorado’s “Make My Day” law allows residents to defend themselves against intruders.

Neb. Man Gets 15-30 Years for Sexual Assault of Child

donald-grafe(AP) — A man from central Nebraska was sentenced to prison for 15 to 30 years after being convicted of having sex with a 14-year-old girl.

Donald Grafe denied at his trial that he’d had sex with the girl at a Lincoln truck stop in 2012, but on Monday he broke down crying and apologized before being sentenced for first-degree sexual assault of a child. A jury found Grafe guilty in November.

Lancaster County District Judge Karen Flowers sentenced Grafe, of Clarks, to 15 to 30 years. Grafe won’t be eligible for parole until he serves 15 years.

The girl’s mother is serving 92 to 120 years in prison, having been convicted of prostituting her 14- and 7-year-old daughters in in Buffalo, Franklin and Furnas counties.

Montana Man Pleads Guilty After Girl Hands Out Pot Candy

pot-candyHAMILTON, Mont. (AP) — A 40-year-old Hamilton man has pleaded guilty to drug charges more than a year and a half after his daughter was found distributing marijuana-laced candy on a school bus.

Robert McCoy accepted a plea-bargain agreement Wednesday that recommends he pay $5,000 to the Ravalli County Drug Fund and serve between 15 and 30 days in jail.

Sentencing is set for March 5.

McCoy and his wife were out of the country in May 2012, when the girl handed out the candy.

Authorities found in their home more than twice the legal amount of marijuana allowed to a medical pot provider, along with a small amount of hashish.

McCoy pleaded guilty to operating an illegal grow operation, possessing hashish and unlawful conduct by a cardholder.

2nd Teen Dies from Crash Near Plattsmouth

fatal-crashPLATTSMOUTH, Neb. (AP) — A second teenager has died from a two-vehicle crash Sunday near Plattsmouth.

17-year-old Savannah Robertson, of Plattsmouth, died Monday at the Nebraska Medical Center. On Sunday, 14-year-old Jenna Miner, of Murray died at the scene of the crash on U.S. Highway 75.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened Sunday morning when a car driven by Robertson crossed the center line and collided with a car driven by 36-year-old Travis Laporte, of Papillion.

Laporte and his brother, 34-year-old Kevin Laporte, of Bellevue, were in good condition Monday at the medical center.

Brian Miner says his daughter and Savannah were close friends who were on the way to Omaha for Christmas shopping.

Miner calls the crash “a crying shame.”
