Amazon.com Developing Delivery Drones

amazonNEW YORK (AP) — Amazon.com says it’s considering using drone aircraft for deliveries.

The online retailer says it’s working on its Prime Air project in its research and development labs. It says the idea is that the delivery system would be able to get purchases to customers in less than 30 minutes through the use of the unmanned aircraft.

The project was first reported Sunday by CBS’ “60 Minutes.”

But Amazon.com Inc. says it will take years to advance the needed technology and for the needed federal Aviation Administration rules and regulations to be created.

Improvements Eyed Around Nebraska Capitol

NE-State-CapitolLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Neglected areas around the Nebraska Capitol have caught the eye of a Lincoln planning expert who wants to see improvements.

Cecil Steward, a member of the Nebraska Capitol Environs Commission, wants a cohesive vision for areas to the south and east of the Capitol.

Steward, a former Lincoln planning commissioner, says the areas have a diverse mix of buildings in varying condition. Some areas have historic and some have deteriorated.

Centennial Mall on the Capitol’s north side is seeing major renovations in time for Nebraska’s 150th anniversary in 2017. Steward says other parts of the district have not yet reached their potential.

Neb. Officials ID Winner of $1 Million Powerball Ticket

powerballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lottery officials have announced the identity of a man who bought a Powerball ticket last month and won $1 million.

The Nebraska Lottery said in a Monday news release that Jerry Wells, of Lincoln, claimed his prize on Nov. 26.

Wells purchased his winning ticket at Roc’s Stop & Shop in Lincoln. His two-play ticket contained a play with all five winning white ball numbers from the Nov. 20 drawing.

Wells says he selects his Powerball numbers based on a combination of birthdays, ages and jersey numbers of his favorite athletes. He says he plans to use the money to pay bills and invest.

Officials say 10 Nebraska Lottery players have won the $1 million prize in Powerball since the game was changed in January 2012.

ACLU Sues US Bishops Over Catholic Hospital Ethics

ACLUDETROIT (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union is taking aim at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and its ethical guidelines for Catholic hospitals.

The ACLU filed a lawsuit in federal court in Michigan accusing the bishops of being negligent for barring certain treatments or the mention of the treatments such as abortion.

The lawsuit was filed in the case of a pregnant woman whose life was at risk from premature labor. The ACLU says Mercy Health Muskegon hospital didn’t tell her that she should consider terminating her pregnancy because the bishops’ guidelines barred mention of abortion.

The lawsuit was filed amid a wave of mergers between Catholic and secular hospital systems. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops says it can’t comment because it hasn’t been officially notified of the lawsuit.

Father Dies in Neb. Accident That Injures Son

fatal-accidentTABLE ROCK, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a southeast Nebraska man died following a single-vehicle crash over the weekend that injured his teenage son.

Pawnee County Sheriff Jayme Reed says 46-year-old Lavon Sharpe, of Table Rock, was a passenger Saturday night in a pickup driven by 15-year-old Brandon Sharpe.

Authorities say the pickup was headed west on a county road near Table Rock when it lost control and rolled over.

Reed says both father and son were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the pickup. Lavon Sharpe was declared dead at the scene.

Brandon Sharpe was taken to a Lincoln hospital with multiple injuries. His condition is not available.

Suspect in Lincoln Gang Shooting Found Dead

lincoln-police-cruiserLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln police say a 22-year-old suspect in a gang-related shooting is dead.

Police say Musito Hector Antonio Lopez died Sunday of an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Lopez is suspected of shooting 20-year-old Erick P. Musito early Sunday after an argument.

Authorities say the men were rival gang members. They had befriended two sisters who lived together in an apartment where Musito was shot, about two blocks from the Nebraska Capitol.

Lincoln Police Chief Jim Peschong says Lopez was found dead in his mother’s mobile home about 6 p.m. Sunday after a SWAT team surrounded her home.

Peschong says Lopez fired several shots from the home. Authorities pumped gas into the trailer, but couldn’t force him out. They got a camera into the home and saw Lopez dead.

Ron BurgundyBISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Television viewers in Bismarck, N.D., were treated to some real class this weekend when none other than the great Ron Burgundy read them the news.

Actor and comedian Will Ferrell reprised his “Anchorman” role for KXMB’s Saturday night news broadcast. The former “Saturday Night Live” star is promoting its upcoming sequel, “Anchorman 2.”

Ferrell read stories while engaging in some witty banter with the news team. He also clowned around, popping into anchor Amber Schatz’s screen while she read a story and noting after the sports segment, “I’ve never seen fighting in a hockey match before. That was fascinating.”

The team expected Ferrell to end with his “Stay classy” catchphrase, but he missed the cue, saying: “What? Am I supposed to read that?”

Lincoln Police Investigating Shooting Death of Man

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Police in Lincoln are releasing few details of their investigation into the shooting death of a 20-year-old man.

Lincoln Police Capt. David Beggs says Erick P. Musito of Lincoln was found around 2:45 a.m. Sunday when a disturbance was reported near 18th and G streets, a few blocks south of downtown.

Musito was taken to a Lincoln hospital where he died.

Beggs says investigators have identified suspects in the shooting, but hadn’t made any arrests as of Sunday afternoon.

Police said little about the shooting on Sunday, but court records show that Musito had ties to gang activity.

Musito’s court record includes several instances of underage alcohol use, and he was caught carrying a concealed weapon in September.

Woman Shot and Killed Inside NE Omaha Home

omahapopoOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police say a woman was shot and killed inside a home in northeast Omaha this weekend, but they released few details initially.

The shooting happened Saturday around 4:45 p.m.

Police Officer James Shade says the woman was shot and killed inside the house, but it didn’t appear to be the woman’s home.

The woman was deceased when officers arrived.

Police did not immediately identify the woman or release her age.

The woman’s death was Omaha’s 43rd homicide in 2013.

Iowa State Trooper Shoots Suspect to End Chase

iowa-state-patrolCOUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A man who fled police in western Iowa at speeds up to 100 mph is recovering after being shot at by a state trooper in Council Bluffs.

Iowa officials say the incident began around 7 a.m. Sunday when a state trooper tried to pull over a man driving a stolen vehicle.

During the chase, the trooper ‘s car went into a ditch on U.S. Highway 275 northeast of Lake Manawa. Officials say the trooper fired when the suspect drove at the trooper.

The suspect’s SUV rolled onto its side, and he was arrested and taken to an Omaha hospital. Authorities say the suspect had a warrant out for his arrest.

The trooper was not hurt in the incident, but he will remain on paid leave while it is investigated.
