(AP) — After 140 years, St. Paul United Church of Christ — one of Lincoln’s first — is closing its doors. Membership at the once-vibrant church in Lincoln has dwindled from nearly 700 people in the 1960s to a mere 18.

The Lincoln Journal Star (http://bit.ly/18ZrOGO) says the church, which opened in 1873, was once big enough to employ two ministers. Now, the church has a “very part-time minister” in the Rev. Gwen Hurst, she said. Hurst was hired in May to help the congregation settle its affairs and sell the building to Northern Lighthouse, a Christian Reformed Church.

The church’s original building, a small white wooden structure, still stands just behind its newer brick counterpart — built in 1877.

The church will hold its last service on Easter Sunday next April.

Former West Point Man Sentenced for Wire Fraud

dept.-of-justice(AP) — A former northeastern Nebraska man has been sentenced to three years of supervised release, including six months of electronic monitoring, after being found guilty of wire fraud.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Omaha says 45-year-old Troy Ortmeier, formerly of West Point, was a real estate broker and manager of Ortmeier & Associates located in West Point.

Prosecutors say that on several occasions from 2008 through 2011, he sent falsified reports to the owners of Ortmeier & Associates indicating certain amounts had been expended for legitimate expenses — such as advertising — when it had not. Prosecutors say Ortmeier took the money on the falsified expenditures.

Ortmeier also was ordered Thursday to pay restitution of nearly $74,000.

Beatrice Man Accused of Raping Young Boy

beatrice-police(AP) — Police in southeast Nebraska have arrested a Beatrice man on suspicion of raping a 9-year-old boy.

38-year-old Scott Taylor was arrested at his home Thursday afternoon. The arrest followed an investigation conducted after the boy told his school teacher of the Nov. 18 assault.

Court records say the assault happened at the boy’s home while his parents were out.

Taylor was arrested on suspicion of first-degree sexual assault of a child. A bond hearing is expected Monday.

Taylor remained in a Gage County jail on Saturday and could not be reached for comment.

Omaha Archdiocese: 2 Priests Are Guilty of Sexual Abuse

(AP) — The Archdiocese of Omaha has found two priests guilty of sexually abusing minors.

Archbishop George Lucas said Friday there is enough evidence against 54-year-old Alfred J. Salanitro and 69-year-old Franklin A. Dvorak to find them guilty.

Salanitro, who was accused in 2011 of sexually abusing a boy in the early 1990s, has been dismissed from the clerical state and can never again serve as a priest anywhere in the Roman Catholic Church. Dvorak, who was accused in 2012 of sexually abusing a girl in the 1970s, has been prohibited from publicly exercising priestly ministry in the church but he can retain his clerical status.

The archdiocese says it has reached out to the victims, as well as the churches where the men served at the time of the allegations.

600K Baby Monitors Recalled Following Strangulation of Two Infants

angelcare-baby-monitor(AP) — Angelcare Monitors Inc. is voluntarily recalling 600,000 baby monitors following the death of two infants due to strangulation.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday that a cord attached to the sensor pad placed under the crib mattress poses a strangulation risk if the child pulls the cord into the crib.

Two infants have died from cord strangulation deaths and two more have reportedly been entangled, but not fatally.

The Angelcare Movement and Sound Monitors were sold at a number of popular U.S. retailers between 1999 and 2013.

Consumers should make sure the cords are placed out of reach of children and contact the company for a repair kit.

Omaha Attorney Who Snitched on Ex-Client Gets Suspended

ne-supreme-court(AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has indefinitely suspended an Omaha attorney after she divulged incriminating information about a former client who had fired her from his criminal case.

The state’s high court on Friday suspended the Nebraska law license of Donna Tonderum for a minimum of three years.

The high court’s Counsel for Discipline says Tonderum was representing a client charged with rape last year when she was fired by the client. Court records say about two weeks later, Tonderum called the prosecutor in the case, saying she knew her former client was guilty and wanted him to go to prison.

The counsel says Tonderum then gave the prosecutor the names of several witnesses, stated what their testimonies would be and what she expected her former client’s defense strategy would be.

Omaha Officer Wounds Suspect Who Ran from Vehicle

officer-involved-shooting(AP) — Authorities say an Omaha officer has shot a man who ran from a vehicle spotted near the scene of another shooting.

Police say officers in northeast Omaha heard gunshots around 8 p.m. near Fontenelle Park and turned to see a sport utility vehicle from which the shots were fired.

Officers managed to stop the SUV within a couple of blocks, but the driver got out and ran. Police say one officer fired at the man, striking him several times. No officers were injured.

Police Capt. Shayna Ray says officers found a gun at the scene, but not in the SUV.

The man’s and the officer’s name haven’t been released. The shooting is being investigated.

Dog Awakens Neb. Woman So They Can Flee Fire

fire-graphic(AP) — Authorities say a woman whose dog woke her up was treated at a hospital after a fire erupted at her home in southeast Nebraska.

The fire was reported just before 8 p.m. Thursday at a house northeast of Firth.

Firth Rural Fire District Assistant Chief Doug Doeschot says the woman reported that the house was filled with smoke when her dog awakened her. She and her dog fled, and she called 911 as she drove to a neighbor’s house. She was taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and released. Her dog wasn’t injured.

The fire cause hasn’t been determined yet, but investigators say the blaze began inside a wall.

Inmate Pleads Guilty to Robbing Beatrice Bank

(AP) — A prison inmate has pleaded guilty to robbing a Beatrice bank in August while out on work release.

32-year-old Lucius L. Turner entered the plea Thursday as part of a deal with prosecutors. He faces between 15 and 20 years in prison when he’s sentenced in January.

As part of his plea deal, Turner will be sent to the Tecumseh State Correctional Institute.

Turner robbed a Pinnacle Bank branch in August while on work release from the Nebraska Department of Corrections. Investigators say he and 35-year-old Gilbert W. McCabe slipped a teller a note demanding money. Both men were later arrested.

The case has been cited as part of Gov. Dave Heineman’s effort to change Nebraska’s system of awarding “good time” credit to prisoners.
