(AP) — Today’s kids can’t keep up with their parents. An analysis of studies on 250 million children around the world finds they don’t run as fast or as far as their parents did when they were young.

Researchers say that on average, children 9 to 17 take 90 seconds longer to run a mile than their counterparts did 30 years ago. Heart-related fitness has declined 5 percent per decade since 1975.

The American Heart Association featured the research at its annual conference in Dallas on Tuesday. The group says the study is the first to show that children’s cardiovascular fitness has declined worldwide over the last three decades.

NYC Bans Tobacco Sales to Anyone Under 21

smoking-21(AP) — New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has signed a bill banning the sale of tobacco products to anyone under age 21.

The legislation makes New York the first large city or state in the country to prohibit sales to young adults.

During a bill-signing ceremony Tuesday, Bloomberg said the law will help prevent young people from experimenting with tobacco at the age when they are most likely to become addicted.

City health officials say 80 percent of smokers start before age 21.

Tobacco companies and some retailers had opposed the age increase. They say it will simply drive teenagers to the city’s thriving black market.

Union Pacific Harvests Omaha’s Christmas Tree

Union-Pacific(AP) — Omaha’s Christmas tree has been cut down from a local yard and delivered to the Durham Museum downtown.

Union Pacific employees removed the 45-foot-tall Colorado Blue Spruce tree from Kevin and Linda Redlinger’s yard in west Omaha on Monday.

The railroad has been providing a tree for Omaha’s Christmas celebration for more than 75 years.

In the past, the railroad used to cut down a tree along its right of way in the Pacific Northwest and bring the tree to Omaha. But this year is the 22nd year when Union Pacific harvested a tree locally for the tradition.

The tree will be decorated before the lighting ceremony on Friday, Nov. 29, at 4 p.m.
