omahapopo(AP) — Omaha police have arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with last week’s assault of a 78-year-old woman in her home.

Police said the teen was arrested Saturday night in Omaha after officers received a tip. A warrant was issued for the teen Thursday.

Police say the teen broke into the home of Janet Jordan last Tuesday around 12:30 a.m.

Jordan said the robber knocked her over and hit her several times in her head. He tried to take her television but fled without it.

The teen is facing a charge of attempted robbery.

Jordan is now out of the hospital and staying with friends while she recovers.

Neb. Woman Who Survived Shooting to Oppose Stepfather’s Parole

new-mexico-corrections-deparment(AP) — A Nebraska woman who survived the 1979 killings of her family in New Mexico is opposing the parole of the killer who is her stepfather.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that Jackie Nasiatka plans to testify at a hearing Monday of the Adult Parole Board in Santa Fe on the parole of Clifton Skidgel.

Skidgel was sentenced to two life prison terms in 1980 after pleading guilty to the shooting deaths in Las Cruces of his wife and three of her children, ages 16, 13 and 8.

Nasiatka, who was 11 at the time, was wounded.

Nasiatka, who now lives in the Omaha, Neb. area, said she doesn’t expect the parole board to make an immediate decision but described the possibility of a parole as terrifying.

Omaha Fire Captain Charged After Traffic Stop

omaha-f-d(AP) — Authorities say an Omaha fire captain had a small amount of marijuana, an open container of alcohol and a handgun that he didn’t quickly disclose when a sheriff’s deputy stopped him last month.

Sarpy County prosecutors have charged 41-year-old Frank J. Guido, of Bellevue, with two misdemeanors. Guido also was ticketed for three other alleged infractions in connection with the stop in the Bellevue area on Aug. 30.

Authorities say Guido had a valid concealed-carry permit, but violated one of its conditions by not immediately informing the officer when he was stopped.

Guido has pleaded not guilty. His attorney says Guido’s employment status with the Omaha Fire Department had not changed.

A fire department spokesman says an internal investigation is under way.

Lincoln Woman Stops Attack with Pepper Spray

pepper-spray(AP) — Lincoln police say a woman squirted pepper spray into an attacker’s face, causing him to run away screaming in pain.

The 20-year-old woman went outside her apartment about 12:15 a.m. Friday to walk her puppy.

Lincoln police officer Katie Flood says the woman passed a man, and then heard footsteps before he grabbed her from behind and put his hand over her mouth.

The woman was prepared with pepper spray. She reached around and sprayed him in the face.

The attacker screamed and ran east.

The woman called police, but officers couldn’t find the man.

Other than jaw pain, the woman wasn’t hurt.

She told police always carries pepper spray when she goes out late and keeps it ready.

(AP) — The 23-year-old sister of a man accused of killing four people in August will stand trial for murder in one of those cases.

A  judge found there was enough evidence Friday to try Erica Jenkins for first-degree murder in the Aug. 19 death of 22-year-old Curtis Bradford.

Prosecutors said Friday during Erica Jenkins’s preliminary hearing that she shot first, then Nikko Jenkins shot, killing Bradford.

Prosecutors say Erica Jenkins then complained that her brother had taken her “first kill” from her.

Nikko Jenkins is also charged with three other counts of first-degree murder for the Aug. 11 deaths of Jorge Cajiga-Ruiz and Juan Uribe-Pena and the Aug. 21 shooting death of Andrea Kruger.

Creighton Students Object to Support for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Concert

creighton-univ(AP) — Creighton University delayed a ticket giveaway to a Macklemore & Ryan Lewis concert after some students raised concerns about the musicians’ support for gay marriage.

The Catholic Student Organization objected and some students wrote to the student newspaper after learning that the Creighton Student Union Program Board planned to give away 50 to 75 vouchers for a concert by the rap group Tuesday at CenturyLink Center Omaha.

The students noted the group’s song “Same Love” supports gay marriage. Since the Catholic Church opposes gay marriage, the students argued the Catholic university shouldn’t support performers who produce such a song.

University officials delayed the giveaway Wednesday before deciding to let it go ahead.

Crews Move Historic Railroad Depot to Belvidere

belvidere-ne(AP) — The last Union Pacific Railroad depot in southern Nebraska’s Thayer County has been moved about eight miles from Alexandria to Belvidere.

The Hastings Tribune reports crews moved the more than century-old depot last week.

The depot was placed near the Whistle Stop train-watching station in Belvidere.

Such depots once stood in in numerous communities along the St. Joseph & Denver City Railroad line, but the one now in Belvidere is believed to be the last of the structures.

The rail line, which was completed through Thayer County in 1872, is now part of the Union Pacific network.

Plans call for renovating the depot, including installing restrooms for visitors who enjoy watching trains rumble along the nearby track.

Mo lives in a family group at the zoo. He is normally in the large indoor display in Hubbard Gorilla Valley.

There are about 350 western lowland gorillas in accredited zoos and aquariums in the country. They are considered critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s red list of threatened species.

In a statement late Friday afternoon, Freitas expressed sympathy to the Lopez family and thanked the Santa Rosa community for keeping protests peaceful.

Neb. Jail Sex Case Goes to Federal Prosecutors

dept.-of-justice(AP) — The case of two Douglas County jail guards accused of having sex with inmates has been turned over to federal prosecutors.

An official with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Nebraska confirmed Friday that federal prosecutors are investigating the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jan Sharp says his office is “reviewing the matter.” He declined to comment further.

Authorities have been looking into allegations that two guards — one male and one female — at the Douglas County jail in Omaha had sex with several different inmates at the jail. The two guards reportedly acted as lookouts for each other.

Federal and state laws bar police officers or jail guards from having sex with people under arrest or in custody. Nebraska’s law says consent cannot be used as a defense.
