(AP) — Miss Kansas Theresa Vail says she wants to break the stereotype that women with visible tattoos don’t compete in pageants.

So during the swimsuit portion of the Miss America competition on Tuesday, Vail revealed two tattoos — the Serenity Prayer on her right side and the insignia of the U.S. Army Dental Corps on her left shoulder.

Vail is a 22-year-old senior at Kansas State University. She’s also a member of the Army National Guard who wants to become a military dentist.

Her platform is helping women overcome stereotypes and break barriers.

Given her platform, she wrote on her blog last month: “What a hypocrite I would be if I covered the ink.”

The Miss America pageant is back in Atlantic City, N.J., after a six-year absence. The finale will be Sunday night.

(AP) — A scabies outbreak spread to officers and inmates and forced a deep cleaning with disinfectants at the Hall County Jail in Grand Island.

County corrections director Fred Ruiz on Tuesday told Hall County board members about the health problem. He says it began about three weeks ago and probably was caused by a new prisoner. The outbreak spread to 13 jailers and five other inmates.

Scabies is a skin infection caused by a mite that burrows under a person’s skin and causes intense itching.

The infected inmates were segregated and treated with a medicated cream. The infected officers were sent home and told to see doctors.

Ruiz says only one new scabies case has surfaced in the past eight days at the jail.

(AP) — Firefighters have found the body of an 82-year-old Omaha woman inside a burning house.

The fire was reported about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday in central Omaha, and fire officials say it was under control by 6:45 a.m. The cause is being investigated.

Authorities haven’t release the woman’s name. Reid Jacobson told the Omaha World-Herald that his mother, Helen Jacobson, lived alone at the house.

An autopsy has been ordered.

(AP) — A federal appeals court has reversed a Nebraska court’s ruling throwing out evidence from what it said was an improper search of a car by Omaha police that turned up drugs and nearly $2,000 in cash.

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday also reversed the suppression of statements 36-year-old Shawn Morgan made to police confessing to being a drug dealer.

Court records show that when Omaha police approached Morgan’s car in a grocery store parking lot on April 17, 2012, he reached under his seat and did not immediately raise his hands when ordered to do so.

A lower court found that officers conducted an improper search of the car after handcuffing Morgan, but the appeals court said Tuesday that there was nothing improper about the search.

(AP) — A northwest Iowa woman is set to stand trial in connection with a January car crash that killed a Nebraska woman and her granddaughter.

The trial for 28-year-old Heather Reisdorph, of Sioux City, is scheduled Thursday in Dakota County Court.

Reisdorph is charged with two counts of misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide.

Authorities say Reisdorph’s vehicle was traveling on U.S. Highway 77 near Dakota City when it rear-ended a car driven by 57-year-old Patricia Oldenburg, of Homer, Neb. The impact pushed Oldenburg’s car into oncoming traffic and another vehicle struck it.

Oldenburg and her 3-year-old granddaughter died from their injuries.

(AP) — A southwest Missouri man has received a 20-year federal prison sentence for holding a young woman captive as a sex slave for six years.

Forty-six-year-old Edward Bagley was sentenced Wednesday after a federal court judge in Kansas City accepted a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty in January to one count of using an interstate facility to entice a minor into illegal sexual contact.

Bagley, of Lebanon, Mo., originally faced 11 federal charges. He was accused of enticing an underage girl to be his sex slave, torturing and mutilating her, and allowing others to view the torture sessions.

Bagley and his wife, Marilyn, said the woman voluntarily engaged in bondage and sadomasochism after she turned 18.

Marilyn Bagley and four other men are also scheduled to be sentenced this week.

(AP) — Authorities say a 21-year-old man has been arrested in the knifing death of a 74-year-old in Omaha.

A police news release says Cedric Hatten was arrested on Tuesday. Douglas County Jail records say Hatten was being held Wednesday on charges that included second-degree murder and two weapons counts. Online court records don’t list the name of his attorney.

Police say Paul Riederer told officers he was stabbed after confronting two people early in the morning on Aug. 20. Riederer was taken to an Omaha hospital, where he died.

No other arrest in the case has been reported.

(AP) — A 40-year-old Butte man has died after his vehicle ran into a semitrailer on a highway in northeast Nebraska.

The Nebraska State Patrol says the accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. Monday on Nebraska Highway 11, just west of Butte.

The patrol says the vehicle driven by Daniel Kocian didn’t halt at a stop sign and ran onto the highway, striking the big rig.

Authorities say Kocian was pronounced dead at a hospital in O’Neill. It’s unclear whether the semitrailer driver was injured.

The Boyd County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the collision.

(AP) — An Ohio man has been arrested in Omaha after a fatal traffic accident.

Omaha police say 30-year-old Evan Shiplett, of Zanesville, Ohio, was arrested on Tuesday evening after he was released from a hospital. He is being held on one count of vehicular homicide.

Police say Shiplett was driving fast when his pickup went out of control and rolled as it left Interstate 480 in eastern Omaha on Friday evening. One of his passengers, 19-year-old Matthew Doty, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, was killed. Another passenger, 18-year-old Jacob Levene, of Neola, Iowa, left the scene but was later taken to a hospital.

Jail records say Shiplett remained in custody on Wednesday morning. Online court records don’t list the name of his attorney.

(AP) — NASA is using former military surveillance drones to help study how tropical storms intensify.

The unmanned Global Hawk aircraft are taking off from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where they’re studying storms that form over the Atlantic Ocean. NASA officials say while forecasting models predicting a storm’s path have improved greatly over the past few decades, there hasn’t been much progress producing models that predict a hurricane’s strength.

Two Global Hawks have been equipped with instruments to study the overall environment of tropical storms as well as their structure. Scientists are primarily interested in learning the impact of the dusty Saharan Air Layer and thunderstorms found within a tropical storm.

The drones are used because they can fly longer than traditional research aircraft.
