Henry Doorly Zoo Has Baby Beavers to Show Off

henry-doorly-zoo(AP) — Omaha’s zoo has a pair of baby beavers to show off.

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium announced Friday that two beaver babies called kits are venturing around the Kingdoms of the Night exhibit. They were born on July 27 and have spent most of their time in the beaver lodge of the nocturnal exhibit’s swamp area.

The kits’ sex is unknown because keepers have not touched them. The creatures join the zoo’s beaver colony, which consists of two females and two males.

Officials say beaver kits are born fully furred. Their eyes open within an hour after birth.

Officials: West Nile Reported in Lancaster County

mosquito(AP) — Officials have reported the first human case of West Nile virus in Lancaster County this year.

The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department did not release additional information about the case. But it says in a news release Friday that the department was recently notified that mosquitoes collected in late August were positive for the virus.

West Nile is transmitted to people through mosquitoes that feed on an infected bird. Most infected people have no symptoms or only mild flu-like symptoms. A small percentage develops a serious illness.

State health officials say that as of Friday, there have been 22 human cases of West Nile in Nebraska.

Nebraska Lecture to Look at Climate Change Health

UNL(AP) — A lecture this month on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus will look at the effect of global warming on human health.

On Wednesday, public health expert Wendy Ring will give an overview of the impact climate change is having on individual and community health.

Her discussion will connect climate change to everything from infectious diseases to mental health.

Ring is a medical doctor who has a master’s degree in public health. She was the medical director of a community health center in California for more than 20 years and has been recognized by Congress, the California Legislature and the American Medical Association for her work in improving access to care for the underserved.

Ring is touring the nation as part of a national effort on climate change and health.

Albion Man Killed in Boone County Crash

fatal-crash(AP) — Authorities say a 62-year-old Albion man has died after a traffic accident in east-central Nebraska’s Boone County.

The Nebraska State Patrol says the accident occurred around 5:20 a.m. Wednesday in St. Edward. The patrol says James Kiesling was driving north in the town when his vehicle left the roadway and struck an embankment. He was alone in his vehicle.

His death and the crash are being investigated. The patrol says Kiesling was not wearing a seat restraint and may have been drinking alcohol.

Man Gets Prison for Vandalizing and Stealing from Lincoln Middle School

(AP) — A 20-year-old man has been given 10 to 16 years in prison for burglary and another conviction stemming from theft and destruction at a middle school in Lincoln.

Online court records say Bruce Grandel had pleaded no contest to burglary and aiding and abetting possession of a firearm. Prosecutors had lowered the weapons charge and dropped another one in exchange for Grandel’s pleas. He was sentenced Wednesday in Lancaster County District Court.

Prosecutors say Grandel and others broke into Dawes Middle School on Dec. 20 and smashed computer monitors, pulled down wall clocks and fired gunshots at a school window. Two computers and a projector were stolen.

Nebraska Breeder Convicted of Neglecting Animals

gavel(AP) — An October sentencing has been scheduled for a southeast Nebraska dog breeder convicted of neglecting her animals.

Authorities say they found 62 adult dogs and 13 puppies at the breeder’s kennels in Malcolm in January. The dog cages were filthy, fouled by feces and urine. Water for dogs outside had frozen.

Court records say the operation’s owner, 61-year-old Julie Hudson, on Thursday pleaded no contest to misdemeanor cruel neglect. Her sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 25.

Inmate Stabs Prison Guard in Lincoln

ne-department-of-corrections(AP) — Authorities say a prison inmate stabbed a correctional officer at a Lincoln hospital.

The Nebraska Correctional Services Department says the assault occurred around 4 a.m. Thursday at the West Campus of Bryan Medical Center.

Nebraska Penitentiary prisoner Robert Carter had been taken to the hospital on Sunday for treatment. The department says the officer was watching Carter in a restroom when Carter yelled at him, hit him in the head and turned to leave. The department says that when the officer told Carter to stop, Carter turned and stabbed the officer with a metal butter knife.

Cuts to the officer’s head, neck and an ear were treated at the hospital, and he was released.

Carter is serving a 30-year sentence for attempted assault on an officer and several other convictions.

Ralston Man, 32, Killed in Accident Near Omaha

douglas-county-sheriff(AP) — Authorities say a 32-year-old Nebraska man died when his truck rolled off the road.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s office says Duane Safarik, of Ralston, died after the Wednesday night crash.

Witnesses say Safarik may have lost control of the Ford F-150 he was driving after he crossed the center land of Highway 92, which is also called West Center Road.

Authorities say Safarik may have overcorrected, and his truck flipped down an embankment near 240th Street.

Safarik died later at an Omaha hospital.

Investigators are trying to determine whether speed or alcohol contributed to the crash.

Police Arrest Man for Giving Gun to Accused Omaha Killer

(AP) — Prosecutors say an Omaha man gave a gun to the suspect in four Omaha killings.

Anthony Wells was ordered held on $1 million bond Thursday. The 30-year-old Wells is charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Prosecutors say Wells gave a gun to 26-year-old Nikko Jenkins after Jenkins was released from prison on July 30.

Jenkins is being held without bond on four counts of first-degree murder in three separate shootings that occurred in the three weeks after he left prison.

Jenkins is accused of killing Andrea Kruger in a Douglas County intersection on Aug. 21, then taking her SUV. He’s also charged with the Aug. 19 death of Curtis Bradford and the Aug. 11 deaths of Jorge Cajiga-Ruiz and Juan Uribe-Pena.

Omaha Police Ask for Public’s Help Finding Motorcycle Helmet Thief (Video)

omaha-police(AP) — Authorities in Omaha want the public to help them find a motorcycle helmet thief.

The Omaha Police Department released two videos Thursday that show a maroon vehicle. Police believe the driver of the vehicle took the helmet.

The helmet was taken Sunday morning from a police motorcycle parked outside a grocery store.

One of the videos shows the driver pulling up to the motorcycle and reaching out of the window before taking the helmet off of the bike. The other video shows the vehicle at a gas station.
