(AP) — A traffic stop on Interstate 80 in eastern Nebraska has led to the seizure of 30.5 lbs. of marijuana and the arrest of two men from Massachusetts.

The Nebraska State Patrol says a trooper stopped an eastbound car near Milford Thursday afternoon on suspicion of following another vehicle too closely.

The patrol says the trooper searched the car after smelling an odor of marijuana coming from it, and found the drugs in the trunk.

The 42-year-old driver, from Westfield, Mass., and a 31-year-old passenger, from Springfield, Mass., were arrested and jailed in Seward County on suspicion of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.

(AP) — A man and wife who were married for more than seven decades died hours apart this week at a hospice in northern Illinois.

Family members say Robert and Nora Viands were always together during their 71 years of marriage. Their son calls their deaths — 16 hours apart at a Rockford retirement center— a “blessing” because each would have been heartbroken without the other.

92-year-old Robert Viands died around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Nora Viands died at 4:45 p.m. She was hospitalized with pneumonia in December.

The Viands’ children decided to put their parents in the same room at the hospice for their final hours.

A joint funeral will be held Sunday.

(AP) — Billionaire Warren Buffett turns 83 on Friday, and he’s not saying whether he’s planning to surprise his Berkshire Hathaway shareholders with a big acquisition to celebrate.

On his last birthday, Buffett announced plans to significantly increase the amount of Berkshire stock he will give to each of his three children’s charitable foundations.

In most years, the investor prefers to celebrate with a day at the office reading business reports and hunting for deals. Buffett has said he enjoys running Berkshire too much to consider retiring.

Buffett has had a relatively quiet summer since Berkshire acquired half of the ketchup maker H.J. Heinz Co. in June. Berkshire spent $12.25 billion on the Heinz deal, but still had $35.7 billion on hand at the end of June.

(AP) — Police say a father whose infant son died after being left in a parked car in the Phoenix summertime heat is suspected of smoking marijuana at the time.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson said late Thursday that 31-year-old Daniel Bryant Gray was being booked into jail, charged with manslaughter and child abuse.

Police said earlier that 3-month-old Jamison Gray died after his father had gone to a sports bar where he works as a kitchen manager at about noon on Wednesday to check on business.

Outside temperatures were about 100 degrees, but interior car temperatures are frequently much higher.

At first police said the father was distracted and forgot about the boy, but Thompson says they later came to suspect he was smoking pot with a coworker during the time his son was in the vehicle.

(AP) — A 26-year-old York man wounded in an exchange of gunfire with a sheriff’s deputy has been charged with six felonies.

The charges against Max McCall include attempted assault on an officer and three weapons counts.

Sheriff Dale Radcliff has said the deputy was responding to a call about McCall on Aug. 11 when the deputy spotted McCall’s vehicle and gave chase. The chase ended when McCall’s vehicle went into a ditch.

The sheriff says McCall was armed with a rifle and fired twice at the deputy. The deputy shot back, hitting McCall twice.

The deputy wasn’t wounded.

A York County jailer said McCall was in custody on Friday. McCall’s attorney didn’t immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

(AP) — A University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate who donated $8 million to the university’s music school earlier this month has died.

UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman said it’s unfortunate that Glenn Korff won’t be around to see the impact his gift will make.

Korff lived in Boulder, Colo., after retiring from Goldman Sachs. He graduated from UNL in 1965.

The university plans to rename the music school in Korff’s honor.

NU officials sent a 15-person marching band to Boulder on Aug. 22-23 to thank Korff for his gift. Friends say he was thrilled by the visit from the musicians.

Korff’s donation will be used to create an endowed fund to support academic programs, student scholarships and faculty projects.

(AP) — An Omaha employer has been sentenced to prison for a single federal count of failing to pay taxes withheld from his employees’ paychecks.

Daniel Malone had initially been charged with two counts for failing to pay nearly $171,000 in federal income and Federal Insurance Contributions Act taxes in 2005 and 2006.

The 66-year-old Malone had faced up to five years in prison; on Thursday, he was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison.

U.S. Attorney Deb Gilg says Malone was also ordered to pay a $3,000 fine, as well as $170,967 in restitution. He will serve one year of supervision following his release from prison.

(AP) — A suburban Omaha school district has installed devices on its school buses that allow officials to track not only the vehicles, but the students on it.

Gretna Public Schools has given students electronic cards to wave in front of a card reader each time they get on and off the school bus.

The system allows the district to track who is on which bus and when and where they board and get off.

The buses are also equipped with GPS devices. If there’s an accident or bus breakdown, the district knows where the bus is and who’s on board. If a child gets off at the wrong stop, officials can alert the parents. Officials can even determine whether buses stop at railroad crossings

(AP) — Prosecutors have filed a murder charge against a defendant who’s been awaiting trial on lesser charges in the slaying of a Lincoln man.

The charge was leveled Wednesday against 24-year-old Miguel Castillo. He’s accused of killing 25-year-old Tyler Schoenrock. Schoenrock’s body was found on a rural road north of Lincoln on Dec. 30

Castillo previously was charged with being an accessory to murder. Investigators say Castillo and 20-year-old Adrian Casares took Schoenrock from his Lincoln home and then left him for dead on the road.

Two more charges were filed Wednesday against Casares: accessory to murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He’s already been charged with terroristic threats and use of a firearm.

Both men have pleaded not guilty.
