Norfolk Man Seriously Injured After Falling or Jumping from Moving Semi

stanton-county-sheriff(AP) — The Stanton County sheriff’s office is investigating what led a man to fall or jump from a moving vehicle and suffer serious injuries when his head hit the pavement.

Authorities say 60-year-old Patrick Prather, of Norfolk, suffered a serious head injury when he fell or jumped from a moving semitrailer on Northeast Industrial Highway near Stanton in northeast Nebraska.

Authorities say Prather was standing on a semi being driven by a 23-year-old Madison man when Prather fell or jumped and struck his head on the highway. He was treated at the scene, then flown to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

No charges or citations have been issued.

Lincoln Woman Stabbed in Cheek with Own High-Heels

lincoln-police(AP) — A 40-year-old Lincoln woman is recovering after being stabbed in the face with her own high-heeled shoe.

Lincoln Police Capt. David Beggs said the woman was assaulted early Sunday in a downtown alley while she stood near her car.

Beggs says the victim was approached by a 28-year-old woman, and the two began to argue.

The younger woman grabbed one of the victim’s shoes and struck her in the face with it. Beggs says the shoe stuck in the woman’s cheek, and then the woman punched and kicked the victim.

The 40-year-old was treated at a Lincoln hospital and released.

The 28-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assault.

The boaters pulled the man from the water and called 911 around 12:30 p.m. Then bystanders performed CPR on the man for more than 25 minutes until paramedics arrived.

The man was flown to a Lincoln hospital. His name was not immediately released.

If You Get Married at the Demolition Derby…You Might Be a Redneck

demolition-derbyThese are the things Jeff Foxworthy speaks of in his infamous You Might Be a Redneck jokes, but to each their own.

A Nebraska couple who met while helping organize demolition derbies got married at one this weekend.

James Rosno and Tracy Anderson exchanged vows Friday night at the Stanton County Fair’s demolition derby.

The two fell in love while working together organizing demolition derbies for nearly two decades.

But the couple’s shared passion for automotive carnage made it hard to find a free weekend for their wedding.

So they invited about 1,000 friends to the fair for their wedding.

Tracy Rosno says most of their friends were supportive, but they did endure some good-natured teasing about holding a “redneck wedding.”

Petitions to Recall Central City School Board Members Fail

central-city-ne(AP) — An effort to recall two Central City school board members has failed.

Merrick County Clerk Marcia Wichman rejected the petitions turned in Tuesday. She says petitioners hadn’t complied with a requirement that each page must state whether those circulating the petitions were volunteers or paid circulators.

The petition effort began in June, two months after the April firing of football coach Darin Garfield. School board meetings since have been filled with people demanding Garfield’s reinstatement.

The petition for recall had cited “lack of responsiveness to concerns raised by public and staff” and “failure to require accountability from administrators.”

Boyfriend of Woman Found in Omaha Grave Arrested

omaha-police(AP) — Police say the boyfriend of an Omaha woman found dead in an open grave has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder in connection with her death.

The arrest of Mikael Loyd late Friday came a week after a warrant was issued for his arrest on a misdemeanor assault charge involving 19-year-old Melissa Rodriguez, whose body was found Thursday in a freshly-dug grave in an Omaha cemetery intended for someone else.

Loyd, also 19, allegedly assaulted Rodriguez in June. According to an affidavit, officers who spoke with Rodriguez reported that she had bruises on her arms and legs. Rodriguez said she didn’t want to press charges, but her family voiced concerns that she was in an abusive relationship.

Rodriguez was a student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Arizona Sheriff Opposes Appointment of Independent Monitor Amid Profiling Scandal

(AP) — An Arizona sheriff’s office found to have racially profiled Latinos is opposing the appointment of an independent monitor to help remedy the issue.

The move disclosed in a court filing Friday could result in a judge ordering the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office to comply with constitutional requirements.

In May, U.S. District Judge Murray Snow found that Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s office singled out Latinos, and that deputies unreasonably prolonged detentions, marking the first finding by a court that the agency engages in racial profiling.

Arpaio’s office is appealing.

Snow delayed issuing orders in the case in June after both parties indicated they wanted time to work toward an agreement.

The joint filing on Friday indicated the judge would have to provide more guidance during an Aug. 30 status conference given the lack of agreement on a proposed consent decree.

(AP) — A 31-year-old man who broke a Lincoln police officer’s nose when confronted about shoplifting suspicions has been sentenced to up to four years in prison.

Court records say Jesse Lee Hare pleaded no contest to third-degree assault on an officer plus charges of attempted forgery in the first-degree and theft by deception.

On Friday, he was sentenced to two to four years in prison.

Authorities say the officer was punched after chasing Hare, who was reported as a suspect in a grocery store theft.

Prosecutors also said Hare tried to grab the officer’s gun and shouted during the scuffle that he had the officer’s gun.
