Univ. of Nebraska College of Law Launches Space Law Doctorate Program

NE-College-of-Law(AP) — The University of Nebraska College of Law will open a new frontier in space law by launching a space law doctorate program this fall semester.

The school already offers a one-year program for a master of laws in space, cyber and telecommunications law. Its graduates have gone on to careers working for private companies, federal agencies and military units, as well as for think tanks, consultants and law firms.

Matthew Schaefer is director of the college’s Space, Cyber and Telecommunications Law program, and he says the Nebraska law school breaks new ground as the only doctoral-level space law program in the United States.

ambulance(AP) — A 2-year-old girl has been hospitalized after being found unresponsive in a backyard pool in an Omaha suburb.

Papillion police say the girl was found by a relative about 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Medics were able to restore her heartbeat, and she was taken to nearby Midlands Hospital. Later she was transferred to Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in Omaha.

Police Lt. Chris Witted says the girl slipped out a door and was able to open a gate to the above-ground pool. Her name hasn’t been released.

FBI Reopens 40-Year-Old Kidnapping Case

FBI(AP) — The FBI has reopened its investigation of the 1964 kidnapping from a Chicago hospital of an infant who was seemingly reunited with his parents more than a year later.

That’s what everyone thought until that boy — now a 49-year-old Henderson, Nev., college administrator — got his and his parents’ DNA tested this year. Paul Fronczak says the tests showed he’s not his parents’ biological son.

Fronczak told the Chicago Sun-Times in June they got their DNA tested because he long wondered why he didn’t resemble his parents, Chester and Dora Fronczak.

The couple’s son was abducted from Michael Reese Hospital. The case seemed to end happily when they were reunited with a boy resembling theirs who was found abandoned in New Jersey.

The case was reopened Wednesday.

Honor Flights for Korean War Vets Not Attracting Money

Korean War(AP) — Seats and flights are being limited for Korean War veterans who want to take a free, one-day tour of military memorials in the nation’s capital.

Bill and Evonne Williams organized the Heartland Honor Flights that carried more than 1,500 World War II vets to Washington, D.C., but financial support for the Korean War vets hasn’t been forthcoming.

The Williamses said more than 500 vets have applied for seats when there may be only 125 and just one plane. So far they’ve collected only about $10,000 in donations. They had raised $1.2 million for the seven flights taken by World War II vets in 2008 and 2009.

The Williamses will be screening the Korean War vets to select the most deserving among them.

Judge Limits Arguments Creighton Can Make in Lawsuit

creighton-univ(AP) — A judge has limited the arguments Creighton University can make in the upcoming trial of a lawsuit by a man who says the university’s medical school discriminated against him because he is deaf.

Jury trial is set to begin Aug. 20 in federal court.

The trial comes after the U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals in March said a jury should be allowed to decide whether Creighton discriminated against Michael Argenyi (ar-GEN’-ee). Argenyi was accepted to Creighton’s medical school after disclosing that he was hearing-impaired and requesting accommodations for his disability. He sued in 2009 after his requests for interpreters were refused.

On Friday, a judge barred Creighton from arguing that accommodating Argenyi’s requests would fundamentally alter medical school curriculum or would pose a threat to the safety of patients.

Prosecutor Says Omaha Shooting May Have Been Justified

crime-scene-police-shoot(AP) — The top county prosecutor says the shooting of an Omaha man at a party may have been justified.

Twenty-eight-year-old Kevin McIntyre died Sunday night at an Omaha hospital after he and his twin brother, Branden, were shot earlier in the evening. Branden McIntyre was treated at another hospital and released.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said on Tuesday that, “preliminarily, it appears the shooting was justified.” But Kleine also said the investigation was continuing.

Kleine says the shooter talked to investigators on Sunday and has been released. Kleine would not disclose the man’s name and would not elaborate on the circumstances that led to the shooting.
