Council Bluffs Police Offer Details of Shooting

officer-involved-shooting(AP) — Authorities are providing more details about a weekend shooting of a man by Council Bluffs police.

The Department of Criminal Investigation identified the man as 52-year-old Michael Hannum.

The incident began Sunday afternoon when a woman told officers Aaron Gutierrez and Jason Burleigh that a man was at a Wal-Mart construction site who was bleeding from his hands.

Officers found Hannum at the site. They say he became aggressive and displayed a sharp instrument.

Burleigh used a stun gun but it was ineffective. Gutierrez then shot Hannum twice.

The DCI says Hannum was listed as a fugitive from a Federal Bureau of Prisons center in Council Bluffs.

The officers were put on paid leave.

Council Bluffs Man Sentenced in Omaha Killing

crime(AP) — A judge has sentenced a Council Bluffs man to prison his part in a 2011 killing in Omaha.

Douglas County District Court Judge Joseph Troia sentenced 42-year-old Corey Brooks to a minimum of 56 years in prison in the shooting death of 50-year-old James Asmus. The sentence means Brooks will be eligible for parole in 28 years.

Brooks was convicted of manslaughter in the killing as well as drug and gun charges.

Before he was sentenced, Brooks apologized to the Asmus family and asked the judge for leniency.

Two other men were charged in the shooting.

Asmus was found shot to death on Sept. 2 in a south Omaha garage. Prosecutors say a plan by Asmus to rob Brooks may have prompted the shooting.

Arizona Crash Kills Three Young Brothers

fatal-accident(AP) — Authorities say three young brothers are dead after a minivan and a car collided in southwest Phoenix.

Phoenix police say a 16-year-old boy didn’t have a driver’s license but was driving six of his siblings to various schools Monday morning.

The names of those killed haven’t been released, but police say the boys were ages 5, 8 and 11.

They say it appears none of the children in the minivan were wearing seat belts at the time of the 7 a.m. crash.

At least three of the children were ejected after the minivan collided with a sedan and then rolled.

Police say three other children remain hospitalized, including a 4-year-old girl who’s in critical condition.

The man in his 40s who was driving the sedan also is in critical.

Women in Nebraska and Iowa Sue Olive Garden Over Illness

olive-garden(AP) — Women from Iowa and Nebraska have filed lawsuits against the company that owns Olive Garden restaurants, saying they became sick after eating at the business.

Federal court documents show Kelly Kunc of Hiawatha, Iowa, and Joyce Nendza of Holt County, Neb., filed the lawsuits.

Minneapolis lawyer Ryan Osterholm, who filed the suits, says Kunc ate an Olive Garden in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He says Nendza ate at a Sioux City, Iowa, Olive Garden.

The suits were filed again Orlando-based Darden Restaurants, which owns both Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants.

The Food and Drug Administration blamed an outbreak of severe stomach illnesses in Iowa and Nebraska on salad served at the restaurants and supplied by a Mexican farm.

A Darden spokesman declined to comment.

(AP) — A 4-year-old has been re-elected as mayor of the tiny tourist town of Dorset in northern Minnesota.

Bobby was only 3 when he won election last year as mayor of Dorset (population 22 to 28, depending on whether the minister and his family are in town).

His mother, Emma Tufts, said she and her son got choked up when his name was pulled for re-election Sunday.

Emma Tufts said her son plans to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Red River Valley in Fargo, N.D., and a new welcome sign for Dorset, which has no formal city government.

They planned to eat dinner and then go fishing or have a bonfire to celebrate.

Illegal Buttocks Injection Maims Women

injection(AP) — Women in the U.S. are risking their lives for black market injections to make their buttocks bigger.

Some want to fill out a pair of jeans. Others believe a bigger bottom will bring work as music video models or adult entertainers.

Whatever the reasoning, they’re seeking out cheaper alternatives to plastic surgery and risking their lives.

Deaths from illicit buttocks injections have been reported in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Pennsylvania, Nevada and New York.

Some have been injected with industrial silicone by people with no medical training.

An interior decorator in Mississippi is charged in two deaths.

Though there’s little data on the procedures, doctors and authorities say they’re seeing them more often.

Online forums used to set up the procedures attract thousands of responses.

Iowa has been on the list for nine straight years, and was ranked second last year. At that time, the school dismissed the rankings as unscientific and invalid. It also said recent data showed drinking is on the decline on campus.

The Princeton Review’s latest edition of “The Best 378 Colleges” was released Monday. Results are compiled from a survey of 126,000 students.

Brigham Young University is the first on the list of “stone-cold sober schools.”
