(AP) — Nebraska’s largest school district now officially has a new leader.

Mark Evans became superintendent of the Omaha school district on Monday.

Evans was picked last year after a nationwide search to replace former Des Moines Superintendent Nancy Sebring, who resigned before her start date following an email scandal. John Mackiel held the post for 15 years before retiring last August.

Evans had been superintendent of Andover Public Schools in Kansas, but he also worked as an administrator in the Wichita school district.

Since Evans was hired, the size of the Omaha school board has been reduced from 12 members to nine, and several new board members have been elected.

Evans plans to meet with administration, community and employee groups over the next few weeks.

(AP) — The doctor of a 14-year-old Ohio girl who had cerebral palsy and weighed just 28 pounds when she died has agreed to plead no contest and give up her medical license.

Fifty-one-year-old Margaret Edwards of Trotwood originally pleaded no contest to three misdemeanor counts of failure to report child abuse or neglect of a functionally impaired person. But in May, she decided to withdraw her plea and got a new attorney.

Edwards on Monday changed her mind again and decided to re-enter the plea. She faces up to 18 months in prison at sentencing scheduled for Aug. 6.

Edwards was Makayla Norman’s doctor from July 2010 until the girl’s March 2011 death from nutritional and medical neglect complicated by her chronic condition.

(AP) — A storm that caused flash flooding in the area burned by Colorado’s Waldo Canyon Fire last year damaged about 20 homes, roughly a half dozen of them significantly.

More than a half inch of rain fell in less than 20 minutes Monday, causing mud to flow into the houses in Manitou Springs and western Colorado Springs.

A witness said the slide pushed her car about five feet and left the engine compartment filled with sticks, twigs and mud.

While the rainfall was intense, the storm moved quickly through the area. A meteorologist says the damage would have been much worse if the storm had settled over the area.

Colorado Springs officials say more than 160 people were relocated from a low-lying trailer park as a precaution.

(AP) — Omaha police say a paramedic and a patient have been injured after a gun discharged inside an ambulance.

Lt. Darci Tierney says the shooting happened Monday afternoon as a female patient was transported to a hospital.

Tierney says a gun discharged inside the ambulance at some point during the ride. The paramedic and the patient, who was being treated for a seizure, were injured. Tierney says additional information about the circumstances of the shooting is unclear.

The paramedic was taken to Nebraska Medical Center in serious condition. The patient was taken to Creighton University Medical Center in critical condition. Tierney says both have non-life-threatening injuries.

The names of the paramedic and the woman have not been released.

(AP) — A Nebraska woman accused of stealing more than $150,000 from an elderly Iowa woman has reached a plea deal.

Terry Lockie pleaded guilty Monday in Woodbury County District Court to one count of dependent adult abuse. A first-degree theft charge has been dismissed.

The plea agreement means a five-year prison sentence has been suspended and the 65-year-old Lockie will be on probation for two years. Her attorney says Lockie may also lose her certified public accountant license.

Lockie, of Homer, Neb., owns an accounting firm in nearby Sioux City. Court records say Lockie had power of attorney for an elderly woman who was suffering from dementia. The records say that between 2008 and 2010, Lockie took money from the woman’s accounts and put it in her own account.

An Iowa man has been sentenced to 50 to 70 years in prison for sexually assaulting two boys between 2004 and 2012.

Robert Schuster, who turns 33 on Tuesday, pleaded no contest to first-degree sexual assault. He was sentenced Monday.

Authorities found seven other potential victims in addition to the boys Schuster is convicted of abusing.

Additionally Schuster has been sentenced to 10-to-30 years in prison in Iowa for assaulting two boys during overnight trips to his apartment in Council Bluffs. He’ll serve that sentence at the same time as the Nebraska one.

Lancaster County District Judge John Colborn says the long sentences reflect the seriousness of Schuster’s crimes and the need to protect the public.

(AP) — An eastern Nebraska woman arrested over the weekend has been accused of slipping out of her handcuffs and taking off in a deputy’s cruiser.

Authorities in Saunders County say 23-year-old Jessica Lewin, of Ashland, was arrested Sunday night following a disturbance report.

Lewin is accused of slipping out of her handcuffs as a deputy gathered information from witnesses. Levin also is accused of getting into the patrol car and driving away.

Authorities say Lewin later jumped out of the car following a short pursuit and was found inside a van at a nearby farmstead.

Lewin faces several charges, including theft, possession of a controlled substance and driving under suspension. Court records do not list an attorney.

(AP) — Federal accident investigators are urging the adoption of new air traffic control procedures for handling aborted landings after five near collisions involving airliners.

The National Transportation Safety Board said in a letter Monday to the Federal Aviation Administration that current procedures should be modified so that in cases where two planes are departing at once, controllers shouldn’t also clear a plane to land at a time it would create the potential for a collision if the flight crew of the landing plane decides to abort the landing and go around for another attempt.

NTSB said there were four such near collisions last year: two in Las Vegas, and one each in New York and Charlotte, N.C. There was also a similar near collision in Las Vegas in 2006.

(AP) — Four hundred firefighters are now battling the Arizona wildfire that killed 19 firefighters.

Yavapai Community Health Services says 200 more firefighters have joined the fight. Hundreds of people are evacuated, and shelters are set up for residents.

An automated call warning people to evacuate was sent, and sheriff’s officers are going door-to-door to make sure people get out of their homes.

The lightning-sparked fire — which had exploded to about 13 square miles by Monday morning — destroyed about 50 homes and threatened 250 others in and around Yarnell, a town of 700 people in the mountains about 85 miles northwest of Phoenix.

(AP) — A Fremont teenager has been accused of drag racing with other teenagers before a fatal crash in June.

Court records show 16-year-old Quinton Amundson has been charged with willful reckless driving, racing on the highway and driving left of the center line.  Amundson has been charged as an adult.

Three 16-year-old students were killed and another seriously hurt in the June 3 crash southeast of Fremont.

Dodge County Attorney Oliver Glass says Amundson was driving a Camaro and racing a Ford Mustang driven by one of the victims. The Mustang lost control and crashed.

Amundson is scheduled for a July 23 arraignment in Dodge County Court. Records do not list an attorney.
