Man Attempts Assault on Woman Outside Omaha Jazzercise Class

assault(AP) — Authorities say a man has been accused of trying to sexually assault a woman outside her Jazzercise class in Omaha.

Omaha police arrested 25-year-old Glenn Nickerson in connection with the Monday morning incident.

The woman told police she encountered a man who appeared to be touching himself as she left her fitness class. She said the man grabbed her by the shoulders as she walked to her car.

Police say the woman screamed for help. Nickerson fled, but he’s accused of punching a nearby witness. He’s also accused of touching himself at a clothing store several hours later.

Nickerson faces charges of first-degree sexual assault, criminal trespassing, lewd conduct and misdemeanor assault.

Court records do not list an attorney.

(AP) — A Lancaster County man has been sentenced to prison for stealing more than $14,000 in jet fuel.

35-year-old  of rural Denton was sentenced Tuesday to two terms totaling two to four years in prison.

Borgman was arrested after investigators determined he’d stolen 2,700 gallons of fuel over a two-month period from Silverhawk Aviation, where he worked. More than 1,000 gallons of jet fuel were found at Borgman’s farm.

Borgman was on probation at that time for third-offense felony drunken driving.

Borgman pleaded no contest in May to the theft.

Lancaster County District Judge John Colborn revoked Borgman’s probation and sentenced him to one to two years on the drunken driving charge and an additional one to two years for the theft.

Omaha Public Library May Cut Hours

omaha-public-library(AP) — The Omaha Public Library Board is considering closing library branches or limiting hours to meet Mayor Jean Stothert’s proposed budget cuts.

A letter from the board to Stothert says a proposed budget for next year would mean a reduction of $175,000 this year and about $218,000 next year.

To meet that reduction, the board listed several scenarios that include closing branches, reducing hours and opening on fewer days.

All the proposals also include offering fewer programs and buying fewer books.

The library board will discuss the options at a meeting Wednesday afternoon.

NE Habitat Estimate Cut for Endangered Bug

(AP) — A federal agency has proposed a nearly 50 percent cut in the Nebraska land the agency says is needed to support the endangered Salt Creek tiger beetle.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service earlier this month published a proposal in the Federal Register to designate 1,110 acres of saline wetlands as critical habitat. In 2010 the agency said more than 1,900 acres was needed.

The beetles live only in the rare saline wetlands on the north side of Lincoln and in neighboring Saunders County.

The agency says that although the 1,110 acres is a smaller area than the previous designation, it contains sufficient suitable habitat to support recovery of the species.

Lincoln-NE(AP) — The Lincoln City Council on Monday has approved the city’s first entertainment district.

The new district’s outdoor portion will include the courtyard for the Railyard development on the east side of Canopy Street and an interior courtyard between the Canopy Street Lofts and a small hotel being built on the west side of Canopy Street.

The district will be managed by Railyard Promotional Associates LLC.

NASA Announces Eight New Astronauts, Four of them Women

nasa(AP) — NASA has eight new astronauts — its first new batch in four years.

The space agency announced its newest astronaut class Monday. Among the lucky candidates: the first female fighter pilot to become an astronaut in nearly two decades. A female helicopter pilot also is in the group. In fact, four of the eight are women, the highest percentage of female astronaut candidates ever selected by NASA.

The eight were chosen from more than 6,000 applications, the second largest number ever received. They will report for duty in August at Johnson Space Center in Houston.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden says these new candidates will help lead the first human mission to an asteroid, and then Mars.

A Beer a Day Keeps the Kidney Stones Away

beer-doctorAccording to a new study, drinking a beer a day reduces the risk of kidney stones by 41 percent.

This is great news for all beer drinkers because kidney stones are brutal. Just ask someone who’s had to deal with them.

Drinking coffee and wine also help, as coffee and wine reduce the risk by between 26 and 33 percent.

Unfortunately, you’re in trouble if you’re a soda junkie. People who drink one or more sugar-sweetened sodas per day are looking at a 23- to 33-percent higher risk of developing the problem.

(AP) — The utility that runs the Cooper nuclear power plant in southeast Nebraska must persuade regulators it has improved the way workers respond to problems.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials plan to meet on June 26 with the Nebraska Public Power District to discuss the concerns inspectors identified last year.

The NRC says that Cooper’s overall performance is acceptable, but regulators to know what NPPD has done to improve the way problems are analyzed and addressed.

NPPD spokesman Mark Becker says the plant’s managers are working to correct this issue, but he emphasized that Cooper continues to operate safely.

Cooper is located on the Missouri River about 70 miles south of Omaha.

(AP) — Coroner’s officials say a form of cancer killed the serial killer known as the Night Stalker who terrorized Southern California in the mid-1980s.

The Marin County coroner’s office said Monday that Ramirez died of complications from B-cell lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. It listed other “significant conditions” including chronic substance abuse and hepatitis C, which is often spread by the use of intravenous drugs.

He had been on death row at San Quentin State Prison since he was convicted in 1989 of 13 murders in 1984 and 1985 as well as rape, sodomy, oral copulation, burglary and attempted murder.

However, executions have been on hold for years.
