NE Missile Site Contamination Spreads

army-corps-of-engineers(AP) — A builder who bought land around an old Atlas nuclear missile site in southeast Nebraska wants the federal government to sink a new well for his housing development.

But the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers favors a slower, permanent cleanup of groundwater contamination from a chemical used to clean missile fuel lines.

The struggle between Dan Kadavy and the federal government has been ongoing since 2005, a year after Kadavy bought the land near Firth under corps assurances that future residents of the houses would be safe. But the chemical that pervaded the nearby missile site migrated to the groundwater under Kadavy’s 16 acres.

He says he’s losing thousands of dollars a month and can’t wait for the corps’ long-term efforts to prove out

(AP) — A private jet that had former President George W. Bush on board made an emergency landing after the smell of smoke was reported in the cockpit.

The Federal Aviation Administration on Sunday said the jet was flying Saturday night from Philadelphia to Dallas, where Bush lives, and was diverted to Louisville, Ky. No one was hurt.

Bush spokesman Freddy Ford was on board and said the plane continued to Dallas after a brief stop. He said he never saw or smelled smoke.

FAA spokeswoman Holly Baker said the Gulfstream 4 declared an emergency due to the “smell of smoke in the cockpit” and landed without incident. She didn’t elaborate.

Bush is honorary chairman of The First Tee, which supports youth education programs through golf, and had attended a Philadelphia event.

Three Dead, Two Critical After Omaha Shooting Spree

omaha-police(AP) — Three people were killed and two others were critically injured in Omaha after a weekend shooting spree tied to one suspect.

Police chief Todd Schmaderer said Sunday that the unidentified suspect would have killed others if he hadn’t been fatally shot by an officer after a 30-minute rampage in south Omaha.

Police say 31-year-old Aaron Anderson was critically injured in the shooting. Authorities were then called to another location, where 46-year-old Angel Cabrera was critically injured.

Another man, 25-year-old Anthony Vazzano, was shot and killed a short time later. Police were then called to 33rd and E streets, where they found 25-year-old Pascual Bautista Raymundo on the ground in an alley. Raymundo died in an apparent shooting.

The suspect was killed after a gunfight with police.

(AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has denied a request for a new hearing by a man serving a life sentence for kidnapping a 9-year-old Norfolk girl.

David Phelps had sought a hearing to consider what he said was new evidence that could prove he did not kidnap Jill Cutshall in 1987.

Cutshall was never found, but a hunter found her clothes near Stanton. She later was legally declared dead.

Phelps’ public defender argued Phelps was entitled to a hearing to consider a diary that surfaced during the murder trial of John Oldson in the 1989 disappearance an Ord woman. Phelps says the diary seemed to document the abduction, rape and murder of four women or girls not far from Norfolk.

Grand Island Attorney Seeks Two Year Old Fees

city-of-grand-island(AP) — A Grand Island attorney whose was denied payment by the Hall County Board of Supervisors because he waited more than two years to submit the bill has filed a notice of appeal in Hall County District Court.

Attorney Jerry Fogarty wants nearly $2,000 for work he did when he was appointed by the court to represent mental health clients in 2010 and 2011.

Fogarty submitted the claims earlier this year, but the Hall County board denied them, citing state law that requires claims to be filed with the county clerk within 90 days of the service that was performed.

But Fogarty’s appeal filed on Wednesday says the board was wrong to deny the claims, because state law requires that he be compensated for the work he completed.

Search Resumes for Missing S. Sioux City Man

south-sioux-city(AP) — Officials have resumed their search for a man who was swept away by the swift current in the Missouri River at South Sioux City.

Crews from several departments, including those from neighboring Iowa, resumed the search Saturday for 25-year-old Anthony Campbell.

A woman who was with him told police that Campbell had gone into the water at Scenic Park Campground around 4 a.m. Friday.

Authorities searched all day Friday for Campbell, using four boats — including two equipped with side-scanning sonar — a dive team and firefighters.

Contractor Removes Wrong Roof in Omaha

roof-removed(AP) — An Omaha couple will be getting a new roof on their home because some errant roofers tore off much of the old one.

Ryan Stamm told deputies that he discovered the problem when he arrived at his home on North 146th Street Thursday and noticed the shingles were gone.

He and his wife did some sleuthing and soon found a roofing crew working at the same Omaha house number on South 146th Street.

The roofing company owner, Jose Medrano, says there was indeed a mix-up on the address. He offered to have his crew take care of the Stamms’ roof, but Ryan Stamm says his own roofing contractor will do the work on Friday.

Medrano’s insurer is expected the cover the $8,500 cost for the Stamms’ roof.
