Arizona Man Fatally Shot by 4-Year-Old Son

accidental-shooting(AP) — Authorities aren’t expected to seek charges in the death of an Arizona man who was accidentally shot by his 4-year-old son.

Justin Stanfield Thomas was fatally shot Friday after he and his son traveled from Phoenix to a friend’s home 90 miles away in the northern Arizona community of Prescott Valley for a surprise visit.

Prescott Valley Police Brandon Bonney says the boy found the loaded gun in the home within minutes of arrival, asked a question about it and pulled the trigger.

Thomas later died at a hospital.

Bonney says the gun should have been locked away, but that Thomas’ friend, whose identity hasn’t been released, was caught off guard by the unannounced visit.

No children lived in the house.

The child is now with his mother.

Lighting Strike Cause Huge Chunk of Concrete to Fall in Lincoln

lightning-strike(AP) — City officials believe a lightning strike caused a large chunk of decorative concrete to tumble 11 stories down to a sidewalk in Lincoln.

Part of a 50-pound vase-shaped piece of concrete shattered a section of sidewalk when it landed far below on the night of May 29.

City fire inspector Chuck Schweitzer said if someone had been below when the concrete hit, “It definitely would have been an injury problem.”

A thunderstorm was rumbling through the area when a resident of the downtown Georgian Place condo heard a crack. The damage was found at the base of the historic building at 11th and P streets.

Electrical Problem Causes Sewage Leak in Bellevue

city-of-bellevueAn electrical problem at a waste water treatment plant in Bellevue caused untreated sewage to pour into the Missouri River.

The city of Omaha says the problem began about 4 p.m. Friday at the Papillion Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, just south of Offutt Air Force Base. The electrical problem caused about 115 cubic feet per second of sewage to be discharged into the river.

Workers were able to fix the problem within about four hours.

Before the problem was resolved, Omaha Public Works advised people to stay out of the river south of the confluence with Papillion Creek and several miles downstream. Officials lifted that advisory after the flow or untreated sewage stopped.

Papillion Officers Cleared in Shooting

papillion-police(AP) — The Sarpy County attorney says officers acted properly during an incident that left a Papillion man with a gunshot wound.

County Attorney Lee Polikov announced Friday there was no evidence of criminal wrongdoing by three Papillion police officers who responded to a disturbance call on May 31.

The attorney says Sgt. Jerry Prazan and officers Robert Morrell and Matthew Elsasser responded to the call and were confronted by the 25-year-old resident, Dennis W. Thomas.

Police say Thomas threatened the officers and then assaulted Morrell, who fired one shot that hit Thomas on his left side. Elsasser also fired a shot, but it missed.

The three officers have been on administrative leave. They will return to work Monday.

Polikov says Thomas will face criminal charges when he’s released from a hospital.

Nebraskans Skeptical of Southeast NE Resevoir

fyra-engineering(AP) — A proposed reservoir in southeast Nebraska is running into opposition from residents.

About 100 people packed a meeting Thursday night in Davenport, about 35 miles southeast of Hastings, to learn more about the proposed 620 acre reservoir in northwest Thayer County.

The Little Blue Natural Resources District Board of Directors authorized an evaluation of the project, originally proposed more than 30 years ago.

Much of the audience was skeptical of the project, outlined by FYRA Engineering of Omaha.

Loma Grone, who would lose land if the reservoir were built, says the project would consume valuable farmland.

Although flood control is a main purpose for the reservoir, others noted the area hasn’t flooded for decades.

Board members will discuss the project at a June 25 meeting.

Ex-Student Who Posed for Naughty Photos at Lincoln Catholic School Charged

Valerie-Dodds(AP) — A former student who posed naked on a Lincoln Catholic high school campus has been cited by Lincoln police for trespassing and public nudity.

Nineteen-year-old Valerie Dodds struck various poses on the football field at Lincoln Piux X early one morning last month. The photos were posted on her website.

Dodds said on her site that the photo shoot was revenge against students and teachers who gave Dodds grief when she shared her plans for a career in porn.

She returned and stood in front of the school on Tuesday, wearing only panties and pasties. That brief attire kept her on the lawful side of the city’s ordinance covering public nudity.

Bill to Legalize Online Gambling Introduced to Congress

congress(AP) — Gamblers who prefer their laptops to blackjack tables could be getting a boost from Washington.

Republican New York Congressman Peter King introduced legislation Thursday that would rescue online gambling from a legal gray zone and fully regulate it.

The federal government cracked down on online poker in 2011. But the same year, the Justice Department issued a ruling making online gambling legal so long as it’s permitted on the state level.

As a result, states have taken steps to usher in a new era of online gambling. It already is legal in Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware.

King says his bill would allow states and players to navigate the world of online betting with confidence. The measure is called the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act of 2013.
